Identification of Piecewise Linear Models of Complex Dynamical Systems
The paper addresses the realization and identification problem or a subclass
of piecewise-affine hybrid systems. The paper provides necessary and sufficient
conditions for existence of a realization, a characterization of minimality,
and an identification algorithm for this subclass of hybrid systems. The
considered system class and the identification problem are motivated by
applications in systems biology
Model predictive control techniques for hybrid systems
This paper describes the main issues encountered when applying model predictive control to hybrid processes. Hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is a research field non-fully developed with many open challenges. The paper describes some of the techniques proposed by the research community to overcome the main problems encountered. Issues related to the stability and the solution of the optimization problem are also discussed. On the interpretation and identification of dynamic Takagi-Sugenofuzzy models
Dynamic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models are not always easy to interpret, in particular when they are identified from experimental data. It is shown that there exists a close relationship between dynamic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models and dynamic linearization when using affine local model structures, which suggests that a solution to the multiobjective identification problem exists. However, it is also shown that the affine local model structure is a highly sensitive parametrization when applied in transient operating regimes. Due to the multiobjective nature of the identification problem studied here, special considerations must be made during model structure selection, experiment design, and identification in order to meet both objectives. Some guidelines for experiment design are suggested and some robust nonlinear identification algorithms are studied. These include constrained and regularized identification and locally weighted identification. Their usefulness in the present context is illustrated by examples
Battery Degradation Maps for Power System Optimization and as a Benchmark Reference
This paper presents a novel method to describe battery degradation. We use
the concept of degradation maps to model the incremental charge capacity loss
as a function of discrete battery control actions and state of charge. The maps
can be scaled to represent any battery system in size and power. Their convex
piece-wise affine representations allow for tractable optimal control
formulations and can be used in power system simulations to incorporate battery
degradation. The map parameters for different battery technologies are
published making them an useful basis to benchmark different battery
technologies in case studies
Realization Theory for LPV State-Space Representations with Affine Dependence
In this paper we present a Kalman-style realization theory for linear
parameter-varying state-space representations whose matrices depend on the
scheduling variables in an affine way (abbreviated as LPV-SSA representations).
We deal both with the discrete-time and the continuous-time cases. We show that
such a LPV-SSA representation is a minimal (in the sense of having the least
number of state-variables) representation of its input-output function, if and
only if it is observable and span-reachable. We show that any two minimal
LPV-SSA representations of the same input-output function are related by a
linear isomorphism, and the isomorphism does not depend on the scheduling
variable.We show that an input-output function can be represented by a LPV-SSA
representation if and only if the Hankel-matrix of the input-output function
has a finite rank. In fact, the rank of the Hankel-matrix gives the dimension
of a minimal LPV-SSA representation. Moreover, we can formulate a counterpart
of partial realization theory for LPV-SSA representation and prove correctness
of the Kalman-Ho algorithm. These results thus represent the basis of systems

Identification of nonlinear interconnected systems
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.In this work we address the problem of identifying a discrete-time nonlinear system composed of a linear dynamical system connected to a static nonlinear component. We use linear fractional representation to provide a united framework for the identification of two classes of such systems. The first class consists of discrete-time systems consists of a linear time invariant system connected to a continuous nonlinear static component. The identification problem of estimating the unknown parameters of the linear system and simultaneously fitting a math order spline to the nonlinear data is addressed. A simple and tractable algorithm based on the separable least squares method is proposed for estimating the parameters of the linear
and the nonlinear components. We also provide a sufficient condition on data for consistency of the identification algorithm. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of the algorithm. Further, we examine a second class of systems that may involve a nonlinear static element of a more complex structure. The nonlinearity may not be continuous and is approximated by piecewise a±ne maps defined on different convex polyhedra, which are defined by linear
combinations of lagged inputs and outputs. An iterative identification procedure is proposed, which alternates the estimation of the linear and the nonlinear subsystems. Standard identification techniques are applied to the linear subsystem, whereas recently developed piecewise affine system identification techniques are employed for the estimation of the nonlinear component. Numerical examples show that the proposed procedure is able to successfully profit

Hybrid modeling and control of mechatronic systems using a piecewise affine dynamics approach
This thesis investigates the topic of modeling and control of PWA systems based on two experimental cases of an electrical and hydraulic nature with varying complexity that were also built, instrumented and evaluated. A full-order model has been created for both systems, including all dominant system dynamics and non-linearities. The unknown parameters and characteristics have been identi ed via an extensive parameter identi cation. In the following, the non-linear characteristics are linearized at several points, resulting in PWA models for each respective setup.
Regarding the closed loop control of the generated models and corresponding experimental setups, a linear control structure comprised of integral error, feed-forward and state-feedback control has been used. Additionally, the hydraulic setup has been controlled in an autonomous hybrid position/force control mode, resulting in a switched system with each mode's dynamics being de ned by the previously derived PWA-based model in combination with the control structure and respective mode-dependent controller gains. The autonomous switch between control modes has been de ned by a switching event capable of consistently switching between modes in a deterministic manner despite the noise-a icted measurements. Several methods were used to obtain suitable controller gains, including optimization routines and pole placement. Validation of the system's fast and accurate response was obtained through simulations and experimental evaluation.
The controlled system's local stability was proven for regions in state-space associated with operational points by using pole-zero analysis. The stability of the hybrid control approach was proven by using multiple Lyapunov functions for the investigated test scenarios.publishedVersio
