    A quasi-Newton procedure for identifying pilot-related parameters of the optimal control model

    The development and application of a quasi-Newton gradient search procedure for identifying independent pilot related parameters of the optimal control model for pilot/vehicle systems is reported. A sensitivity analysis procedure which determines whether a given model parameter is required to match a specific experimental result, and which experimentally induced parameter changes are required to account for behavioral and performance differences, is described. Application of the identification scheme to training effects in a manual control task is described

    Human operator identification model and related computer programs

    Four computer programs which provide computational assistance in the analysis of man/machine systems are reported. The programs are: (1) Modified Transfer Function Program (TF); (2) Time Varying Response Program (TVSR); (3) Optimal Simulation Program (TVOPT); and (4) Linear Identification Program (SCIDNT). The TV program converts the time domain state variable system representative to frequency domain transfer function system representation. The TVSR program computes time histories of the input/output responses of the human operator model. The TVOPT program is an optimal simulation program and is similar to TVSR in that it produces time histories of system states associated with an operator in the loop system. The differences between the two programs are presented. The SCIDNT program is an open loop identification code which operates on the simulated data from TVOPT (or TVSR) or real operator data from motion simulators

    Logistic Knowledge Tracing: A Constrained Framework for Learner Modeling

    Adaptive learning technology solutions often use a learner model to trace learning and make pedagogical decisions. The present research introduces a formalized methodology for specifying learner models, Logistic Knowledge Tracing (LKT), that consolidates many extant learner modeling methods. The strength of LKT is the specification of a symbolic notation system for alternative logistic regression models that is powerful enough to specify many extant models in the literature and many new models. To demonstrate the generality of LKT, we fit 12 models, some variants of well-known models and some newly devised, to 6 learning technology datasets. The results indicated that no single learner model was best in all cases, further justifying a broad approach that considers multiple learner model features and the learning context. The models presented here avoid student-level fixed parameters to increase generalizability. We also introduce features to stand in for these intercepts. We argue that to be maximally applicable, a learner model needs to adapt to student differences, rather than needing to be pre-parameterized with the level of each student's ability

    An agent-driven semantical identifier using radial basis neural networks and reinforcement learning

    Due to the huge availability of documents in digital form, and the deception possibility raise bound to the essence of digital documents and the way they are spread, the authorship attribution problem has constantly increased its relevance. Nowadays, authorship attribution,for both information retrieval and analysis, has gained great importance in the context of security, trust and copyright preservation. This work proposes an innovative multi-agent driven machine learning technique that has been developed for authorship attribution. By means of a preprocessing for word-grouping and time-period related analysis of the common lexicon, we determine a bias reference level for the recurrence frequency of the words within analysed texts, and then train a Radial Basis Neural Networks (RBPNN)-based classifier to identify the correct author. The main advantage of the proposed approach lies in the generality of the semantic analysis, which can be applied to different contexts and lexical domains, without requiring any modification.     Effects of Control Stick Parameters on Human Controller Response

    A fixed base laboratory tracking study was conducted to determine the effects of stick displacement and stick force characteristics on human tracking performance. Three different levels of control stick force/displacement characteristics and stick electrical gain were varied to observe their influence on RMS (Root Mean Square) tracking error and RMS control activity (stick output). The results indicated that both RMS tracking error and RMS control activity were influenced by the three different levels of control stick force/displacement characteristics and stick electrical gain. The human neuromotor time constant was affected by the electrical control gain of the stick while the spring stiffness of the stick influenced the time delay characteristics of the human response behavior

    The integrated manual and automatic control of complex flight systems

    Research dealt with the general area of optimal flight control synthesis for manned flight vehicles. The work was generic; no specific vehicle was the focus of study. However, the class of vehicles generally considered were those for which high authority, multivariable control systems might be considered, for the purpose of stabilization and the achievement of optimal handling characteristics. Within this scope, the topics of study included several optimal control synthesis techniques, control-theoretic modeling of the human operator in flight control tasks, and the development of possible handling qualities metrics and/or measures of merit. Basic contributions were made in all these topics, including human operator (pilot) models for multi-loop tasks, optimal output feedback flight control synthesis techniques; experimental validations of the methods developed, and fundamental modeling studies of the air-to-air tracking and flared landing tasks
