    Software systems engineering: a journey to contemporary agile and beyond, do people matter?

    It is fascinating to view the evolution of software systems engineering over the decades. At the first glance, it could be perceived that the various approaches and processes are different. Are they indeed different? This paper will briefly discuss such a journey relating to findings from an empirical study in some organisations in the UK. Some of the issues described in the literature and by practitioners are common across different software system engineering approaches over the time. It can be argued that human-element of software development plays an integral part in the success of software systems development endeavour. After all, software engineering is a human-centric craft. In order to understand such issues, we crossed the discipline to other disciplines in order to adapt theories and principles that will help to better understand and tackle such matter. Other disciplines have well established human related theories and principles that can be useful. From Japanese management philosophies, we have adapted Lean and knowledge management theories. From psychology, we have adapted Emotional Intelligence (EI). With such an interdisciplinary view, some of the issues can be addressed adequately. Which bring the question: is it really the process or the people? The second author will reflect on his experience attending the first SQM conference 25 years ago. The reflection will discuss the evolution of software systems engineering, and what was changed since then, if at all changed

    Experimental detection using cyclostationary feature detectors for cognitive radios

    © 2014 IEEE. Signal detection is widely used in many applications. Some examples include Cognitive Radio (CR) and military intelligence. Without guaranteed signal detection, a CR cannot reliably perform its role. Spectrum sensing is currently one of the most challenging problems in cognitive radio design because of various factors such as multi-path fading and signal to noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we particularly focus on the detection method based on cyclostationary feature detectors (CFD) estimation. The advantage of CFD is its relative robustness against noise uncertainty compared with energy detection methods. The experimental result present in this paper show that the cyclostationary feature-based detection can be robust compared to energy-based technique for low SNR levels

    Fronthaul-Constrained Cloud Radio Access Networks: Insights and Challenges

    As a promising paradigm for fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems, cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) have been shown to reduce both capital and operating expenditures, as well as to provide high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). The fronthaul in such networks, defined as the transmission link between a baseband unit (BBU) and a remote radio head (RRH), requires high capacity, but is often constrained. This article comprehensively surveys recent advances in fronthaul-constrained C-RANs, including system architectures and key techniques. In particular, key techniques for alleviating the impact of constrained fronthaul on SE/EE and quality of service for users, including compression and quantization, large-scale coordinated processing and clustering, and resource allocation optimization, are discussed.     Adventures in Learning: Creating Role Playing Video Games to Teach and Learn Economics

    This article examines pedagogical lessons derived from the learning theory embodied in commercially successfully video games and their link to reported increases in 'fluid intelligence' of student populations. The scholarly literature in this area is reviewed in order to elicit practical principles by which to guide the development of instructional video game modules for the teaching of economics. The authors' experiences in developing and pilot testing such a module, and in subsequently guiding student research efforts to develop an additional module, are then reviewed. The paper concludes that harnessing the benefits of video game technologies in the service of teaching and learning economics is both pedagogically sound and feasible for individual instructors.
