Smart labs and social practice: social tools for pervasive laboratory workspaces: a position paper
The emergence of pervasive and ubiquitous computing stimulates a view of future work environments where sharing of information, data and knowledge is easy and commonplace, particularly in highly interactive settings. Much of the work in this area focuses on tool development to support activities such as data collection, data recording and sharing, and so on. We are interested in this kind of technical development, which is both challenging and essential for science communities. But we are also interested in a broader interpretation of knowledge sharing and the human/social side of tools we develop to support this. We are keen to know more about how groups of different kinds of scientists can make their work understandable and shareable with each other in a multidisciplinary setting. This is a complex task because boundaries and barriers can emerge between disciplines engendered by differences in discourses and practices, which may not easily translate into other discipline areas. In the worst case, there may be some hostility between disciplines, or at least doubt and scepticism. Nevertheless, sharing approaches to research, research expertise, data and methods across disciplines can be a very fruitful exercise, and encouragement to engage in this activity is particularly pertinent in the digital era. Issues of privacy and security are also key aspects â knowing when and how to release data or information to other groups is crucial to providing a safe environment for people to work, and there are several sensitivities to be explored here.
In this paper we describe an evolving situation that captures many of these issues, which we aim to track longitudinally
DSOGI-PLL based power control method to mitigate control errors under disturbances of grid connected hybrid renewable power systems
The control of power converter devices is
one of the main research lines in interfaced renewable
energy sources, such as solar cells and wind turbines.
Therefore, suitable control algorithms should be
designed in order to regulate power or current properly
and attain a good power quality for some disturbances,
such as voltage sag/swell, voltage unbalances and fluctuations,
long interruptions, and harmonics. Various
synchronisation techniques based control strategies
are implemented for the hybrid power system applications
under unbalanced conditions in literature studies.
In this paper, synchronisation algorithms based
Proportional-Resonant (PR) power/current controller
is applied to the hybrid power system (solar cell + wind
turbine + grid), and Dual Second Order Generalized
Integrator-Phase Locked Loop (DSOGI-PLL) based PR
controller in stationary reference frame provides a solution
to overcome these problems. The influence of
various cases, such as unbalance, and harmonic conditions,
is examined, analysed and compared to the PR
controllers based on DSOGI-PLL and SRF-PLL. The
results verify the effectiveness and correctness of the
proposed DSOGI-PLL based power control method
Design and Implementation of Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Tracking Control for a DC-DC Buck Converter
This paper presents the design and implementation of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller for a DC-DC buck converter using Arduino board. The proposed fuzzy controller is able to pilot the states of the buck converter to track a reference model. The T-S fuzzy model is employed, firstly, to represent exactly the dynamics of the nonlinear buck converter system, and then the considered controller is designed on the basis of a concept called Virtual Desired Variables (VDVs). In this case, a two-stage design procedure is developed: i) determine the reference model according to the desired output voltage, ii) determine the fuzzy controller gains by solving a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). A digital implementation of the proposed T-S fuzzy controller is carried out using the ATmega328P-based Microcontroller of the Arduino Uno board. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme
Predictive biometrics: A review and analysis of predicting personal characteristics from biometric data
Interest in the exploitation of soft biometrics information has continued to develop over the last decade or so. In comparison with traditional biometrics, which focuses principally on person identification, the idea of soft biometrics processing is to study the utilisation of more general information regarding a system user, which is not necessarily unique. There are increasing indications that this type of data will have great value in providing complementary information for user authentication. However, the authors have also seen a growing interest in broadening the predictive capabilities of biometric data, encompassing both easily definable characteristics such as subject age and, most recently, `higher level' characteristics such as emotional or mental states. This study will present a selective review of the predictive capabilities, in the widest sense, of biometric data processing, providing an analysis of the key issues still adequately to be addressed if this concept of predictive biometrics is to be fully exploited in the future
The Fundamentals of Radar with Applications to Autonomous Vehicles
Radar systems can be extremely useful for applications in autonomous vehicles. This paper seeks to show how radar systems function and how they can apply to improve autonomous vehicles. First, the basics of radar systems are presented to introduce the basic terminology involved with radar. Then, the topic of phased arrays is presented because of their application to autonomous vehicles. The topic of digital signal processing is also discussed because of its importance for all modern radar systems. Finally, examples of radar systems based on the presented knowledge are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of radar systems in autonomous vehicles

An M-QAM Signal Modulation Recognition Algorithm in AWGN Channel
Computing the distinct features from input data, before the classification,
is a part of complexity to the methods of Automatic Modulation Classification
(AMC) which deals with modulation classification was a pattern recognition
problem. Although the algorithms that focus on MultiLevel Quadrature Amplitude
Modulation (M-QAM) which underneath different channel scenarios was well
detailed. A search of the literature revealed indicates that few studies were
done on the classification of high order M-QAM modulation schemes like128-QAM,
256-QAM, 512-QAM and1024-QAM. This work is focusing on the investigation of the
powerful capability of the natural logarithmic properties and the possibility
of extracting Higher-Order Cumulant's (HOC) features from input data received
raw. The HOC signals were extracted under Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN)
channel with four effective parameters which were defined to distinguished the
types of modulation from the set; 4-QAM~1024-QAM. This approach makes the
recognizer more intelligent and improves the success rate of classification.
From simulation results, which was achieved under statistical models for noisy
channels, manifest that recognized algorithm executes was recognizing in M-QAM,
furthermore, most results were promising and showed that the logarithmic
classifier works well over both AWGN and different fading channels, as well as
it can achieve a reliable recognition rate even at a lower signal-to-noise
ratio (less than zero), it can be considered as an Integrated Automatic
Modulation Classification (AMC) system in order to identify high order of M-QAM
signals that applied a unique logarithmic classifier, to represents higher
versatility, hence it has a superior performance via all previous works in
automatic modulation identification systemComment: 18 page
