    Optical boundaries for LED-based indoor positioning system

    Overlap of footprints of light emitting diodes (LEDs) increases the positioning accuracy of wearable LED indoor positioning systems (IPS) but such an approach assumes that the footprint boundaries are defined. In this work, we develop a mathematical model for defining the footprint boundaries of an LED in terms of a threshold angle instead of the conventional half or full angle. To show the effect of the threshold angle, we compare how overlaps and receiver tilts affect the performance of an LED-based IPS when the optical boundary is defined at the threshold angle and at the full angle. Using experimental measurements, simulations, and theoretical analysis, the effect of the defined threshold angle is estimated. The results show that the positional time when using the newly defined threshold angle is 12 times shorter than the time when the full angle is used. When the effect of tilt is considered, the threshold angle time is 22 times shorter than the full angle positioning time. Regarding accuracy, it is shown in this work that a positioning error as low as 230 mm can be obtained. Consequently, while the IPS gives a very low positioning error, a defined threshold angle reduces delays in an overlap-based LED IPS

    On the Performance of Interleavers for Quantum Turbo Codes

    Quantum turbo codes (QTC) have shown excellent error correction capabilities in the setting of quantum communication, achieving a performance less than 1 dB away from their corresponding hashing bounds. Existing QTCs have been constructed using uniform random interleavers. However, interleaver design plays an important role in the optimization of classical turbo codes. Consequently, inspired by the widely used classical-to-quantum isomorphism, this paper studies the integration of classical interleaving design methods into the paradigm of quantum turbo coding. Simulations results demonstrate that error floors in QTCs can be lowered significantly, while decreasing memory consumption, by proper interleaving design without increasing the overall decoding complexity of the system

    Noncontact Respiratory Measurement for Multiple People at Arbitrary Locations Using Array Radar and Respiratory-Space Clustering

    We developed a noncontact measurement system for monitoring the respiration of multiple people using millimeter-wave array radar. To separate the radar echoes of multiple people, conventional techniques cluster the radar echoes in the time, frequency, or spatial domain. Focusing on the measurement of the respiratory signals of multiple people, we propose a method called respiratory-space clustering, in which individual differences in the respiratory rate are effectively exploited to accurately resolve the echoes from human bodies. The proposed respiratory-space clustering can separate echoes, even when people are located close to each other. In addition, the proposed method can be applied when the number of targets is unknown and can accurately estimate the number and positions of people. We perform multiple experiments involving five or seven participants to verify the performance of the proposed method, and quantitatively evaluate the estimation accuracy for the number of people and the respiratory intervals. The experimental results show that the average root-mean-square error in estimating the respiratory interval is 196 ms using the proposed method. The use of the proposed method, rather the conventional method, improves the accuracy of the estimation of the number of people by 85.0%, which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed method for the measurement of the respiration of multiple people

    A high-performance polar code introduced as a product polar code can be constructed by concatenating two short length polar codes. The punctured structure of this code was achieved by puncturing one of its constituent codes. The constructed polar code provided better performance than a single polar code in the error ïŹ‚oor region. However, its performance in the waterfall region was not as good as that of single polar codes. This paper proposes a new puncturing algorithm for product codes constructed by two identical polar codes. Puncturing is conducted on both constituent codes, to ensure that the new code outperforms the previously punctured product polar and single polar codes. This is evident in both waterfall and error ïŹ‚oor regions

    CSI-based fingerprinting for indoor localization using LTE Signals

    Abstract This paper addresses the use of channel state information (CSI) for Long Term Evolution (LTE) signal fingerprinting localization. In particular, the paper proposes a novel CSI-based signal fingerprinting approach, where fingerprints are descriptors of the "shape" of the channel frequency response (CFR) calculated on CSI vectors, rather than direct CSI vectors. Experiments have been carried out to prove the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed method and to study the impact on the localization performance of (i) the bandwidth of the available LTE signal and (ii) the availability of more LTE signals transmitted by different eNodeB (cell diversity). Comparisons with other signal fingerprinting approaches, such as the ones based on received signal strength indicator or reference signal received power, clearly show that using LTE CSI, and in particular, descriptors as fingerprints, can bring relevant performance improvement

    Vulnerable road users and connected autonomous vehicles interaction: a survey

    There is a group of users within the vehicular traffic ecosystem known as Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). VRUs include pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, among others. On the other hand, connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are a set of technologies that combines, on the one hand, communication technologies to stay always ubiquitous connected, and on the other hand, automated technologies to assist or replace the human driver during the driving process. Autonomous vehicles are being visualized as a viable alternative to solve road accidents providing a general safe environment for all the users on the road specifically to the most vulnerable. One of the problems facing autonomous vehicles is to generate mechanisms that facilitate their integration not only within the mobility environment, but also into the road society in a safe and efficient way.     This paper is devoted to evaluating the performance of Space-Memory-Memory (SMM) Clos-network switches under a packet dispatching scheme employing static connection patterns, referred to as Static Dispatching (SD). The control algorithm with static connection patterns can be easily implemented in the SMM fabric due to bufferless switches in the first stage. Stability is one of the very important performance factors of packet switching nodes. In general, a switch is stable for a particular arrival process if the expected length of the packet queues does not increase without limitation. To prove the stability of the SMM Clos-network switches considered under the SD packet dispatching scheme the discrete Markov chain model of the switch is used and Foster’s criteria to extend Lyapunov’s second (direct) method of stability investigation of discrete time stochastic systems are used. The results of simulation experiments, in terms of average cell delay and packet queue lengths, are shown as well
