    Engineering XML solutions using views

    In industrial informatics, engineering data intensive Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) is a challenging task without abstraction and partitioning. Further, the introduction of semi-structured data (namely XML) and its rapid adaptation by the commercial and industrial systems increased the complexity for data engineering. Conversely, the introduction of OMG's MDA presents an interesting paradigm for EIS and system modelling, where a system is designed at a higher level of abstraction. This presents an interesting problem to investigate data engineering XML solutions under the MDA initiatives, where, models and framework requires higher level of abstraction. In this paper we investigate a view model that can provide layered design methodology for modelling data intensive XML solutions for EIS paradigm, with sufficient level of abstraction

    Benefits and barriers related to eai adoption: the case of a healthcare organisation

    Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) technology has emerged to overcome integration problems at different levels such as process and data. Although, many public and private organisations have successfully implemented EAI solutions, the adoption of EAI in healthcare organisations is slow and problematic. The research that has been published in this area remains limited and has mainly focused on factors (e.g. benefits, barriers etc) that influence the decision making process for EAI adoption in healthcare. Notwithstanding, the implications of EAI have yet to be assessed, leaving scope for timeliness and novel research. The main contribution of this paper is the identification of the benefits and barriers associated with the EAI adoption in healthcare. In addition, this research has identified and mapped healthcare actors to these benefits and barriers. Therefore, it supports the decision making process as it results in more informed practices and thus speeds up EAI adoption in healthcare. This is of high importance as 23725 human lives are lost in UK every year due to the limitations of the non-integrated healthcare Information Technology (IT) infrastructures. The proposed approach is significant and novel as it (a) improves the realisation of EAI adoption benefits and barriers, (b) enhances the analysis of EAI adoption in healthcare by incorporating an actororiented approach and (c) facilitates healthcare organisations and decision-makers in realizing EAI adoption benefits and barriers. Thus, it significantly contributes to the body of knowledge and practice in this area. Thus, it provides sufficient support to the management and speeds up the adoption process

    INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, LOGISTICS PERFORMANCE AND MODERATING EFFECT OF FIRM SIZE: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM EAST COAST REGION OF MALAYSIA

    Information Technology (IT) is universally accepted as one of efficiency boosters. Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) around the world involve in IT implementation with the purpose to increase their service efficiency in catering business demands, especially for LSPs which operate in the areas of heavy trade activities. The activities create congestion which lead to deficient of LSPs performance and increase delivery time and total costs. However, the review of literature reveals that IT implementation met with productivity paradox. Thus, in order to examine how IT implementation influences the performance of LSPs in East Coast Malaysia, 81 LSP firms in the region were involved in this study. This study also investigated the moderating effect of LSP sizes on their performance. The findings reveal that IT implementation significantly influenced LSPs’ performance, but it happened vice versa for the moderator investigation. This study has bridged the literature gaps of IT adoption in such that it offers empirical evidence and new insights on the significant moderating effect of firm size in the relationships between IT implementation and logistics firm performance using Malaysian samples.Keywords: Information Technology, logistics service providers, performance, firm size, Malaysia.Cite as: Mohd Zawawi, N.F. & Abd Wahab, S.     ISSUES IN DELIVERY OPERATIONS – CAN VARIABLE PAY SCHEMES REALLY WORK?

    Ongoing changes in business objectives increasingly result in implementation of different business strategies striving to improve the workers’ performance. In that context, variable pay schemes have been utilised to increase employees’ motivation and productivity. Unlike the sales and warehouse sector, a number of issues emerge with respect to the variable pay schemes in delivery operations. The paper aims to examine issues and challenges associated with the introduction of variable pay schemes in the field of delivery operations. In this paper, we illustrate and analyse a case study from delivery operations of the FMCG sector in the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this sense, the paper addresses the following research questions: What is the intended purpose of variable pay schemes? Which variables affect delivery operations? Why delivery performance should be carefully monitored? Which external factors influence delivery driver productivity? Can variable pay schemes attract, motivate or retain employees? Can variable pay schemes really work in delivery operations? The discussion presented in the paper has important practical implications related to workforce management and may be useful to managers and other subjects involved in designing pay and reward structures

    Enhancement of natural language processing approach for automated generation of object constraint language

    Object Constraint Language (OCL) is the most prevalent modeling language to document requirement constraints that are annotated in the Unified Modeling Language. Various researchers have proved that OCL syntax is complex and difficult for some reasons such as its declarative nature. As the measure of ease-of-use factor of a language has a direct relationship with the language’s usability, the difficulties in the use of OCL result in the low usability of OCL. There are few research works for OCL generation using some different techniques such as pattern-based and Model-Driven Architecture (MDA)-based. The accuracy of the existing patternbased work generating OCL specification is low. MDA focuses on software development based on generating models and transforming these models between each other. There are some researches based on MDA to increase the usability of modeling languages. However, only one of the existing works supports OCL. The existing MDA-based work generating OCL specification does not support some OCL elements, such as collect and reject, and some UML elements such as enumeration. Therefore, this research proposes an MDA-based approach to transform requirement constraints formed in English sentences into OCL specifications using transformation rules. A software tool is developed to validate the proposed approach and compare with the existing works. The comparison shows that the proposed approach solves some limitations of the existing works such as support of some OCL and UML elements, which are not supported by the existing works. The comparison also shows that some accuracy improvement is achieved by the proposed approach in comparison with the existing works

    An evaluation of the challenges of Multilingualism in Data Warehouse development

    In this paper we discuss Business Intelligence and define what is meant by support for Multilingualism in a Business Intelligence reporting context. We identify support for Multilingualism as a challenging issue which has implications for data warehouse design and reporting performance. Data warehouses are a core component of most Business Intelligence systems and the star schema is the approach most widely used to develop data warehouses and dimensional Data Marts. We discuss the way in which Multilingualism can be supported in the Star Schema and identify that current approaches have serious limitations which include data redundancy and data manipulation, performance and maintenance issues. We propose a new approach to enable the optimal application of multilingualism in Business Intelligence. The proposed approach was found to produce satisfactory results when used in a proof-of-concept environment. Future work will include testing the approach in an enterprise environmen
