    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: aggregation for the operation of power systems is an area of recent research. Accurate forecasts are crucial for extracting those benefits and promote an optimal integration of such plants into power systems and electricity markets. This study focuses on the hybridisation of existing wind power plants with different shares of solar photovoltaic capacity and investigates how these power plants can reduce their combined forecast errors and thus, increasing profitability in electricity markets. The work uses a forecast methodology based on a sequential forward feature selection algorithm which employs two different objective functions and an artificial neural network approach previously presented but, in this case, it is applied to the specific case of hybrid power plants. The methodology uses as input data from a numerical weather prediction model and iteratively selects meteorological features to achieve the different objective functions implemented, namely i) minimisation of the root mean square error; or ii) maximisation of the market remuneration. The methodology developed was applied to three case studies in Portugal with different levels of wind and solar generation complementarity. The results show that the hybrid power plants can increase market value by up to 5% and total remuneration can increase by up to 30% when compared with the existing wind power plant, while it is possible to reduce the forecast errors by nearly 4%. The obtained results highlight the need to select the most relevant meteorological features to maximise the accuracy of the power forecast and the renewable power producers revenues in a market environment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Wind energy production has had accelerated growth in recent years, reaching an annual increase of 17% in 2021. Wind speed plays a crucial role in the stability required for power grid operation. However, wind intermittency makes accurate forecasting a complicated process. Implementing new technologies has allowed the development of hybrid models and techniques, improving wind speed forecasting accuracy. Additionally, statistical and artificial intelligence methods, especially artificial neural networks, have been applied to enhance the results. However, there is a concern about identifying the main factors influencing the forecasting process and providing a basis for estimation with artificial neural network models. This paper reviews and classifies the forecasting models used in recent years according to the input model type, the pre-processing and post-processing technique, the artificial neural network model, the prediction horizon, the steps ahead number, and the evaluation metric. The research results indicate that artificial neural network (ANN)-based models can provide accurate wind forecasting and essential information about the specific location of potential wind use for a power plant by understanding the future wind speed values

Stock market trading is an unending investment exercise globally. It has potentials to generate high returns on investors’ investment. However, it is characterized by high risk of investment hence, having knowledge and ability to predict stock price or market movement is invaluable to investors in the stock market. Over the years, several soft computing techniques have been used to analyze various stock markets to retrieve knowledge to guide investors on when to buy or sell. This paper surveys over 100 published articles that focus on the application of soft computing techniques to forecast stock markets. The aim of this paper is to present a coherent of information on various soft computing techniques employed for stock market prediction. This research work will enable researchers in this field to know the current trend as well as help to inform their future research efforts. From the surveyed articles, it is evident that researchers have firmly focused on the development of hybrid prediction models and substantial work has also been done on the use of social media data for stock market prediction. It is also revealing that most studies have focused on the prediction of stock prices in emerging market

Machine learning (ML) models have been widely used in the modeling, design and prediction in energy systems. During the past two decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the advancement and application of various types of ML models for energy systems. This paper presents the state of the art of ML models used in energy systems along with a novel taxonomy of models and applications. Through a novel methodology, ML models are identified and further classified according to the ML modeling technique, energy type, and application area. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of the literature leads to an assessment and performance evaluation of the ML models and their applications, and a discussion of the major challenges and opportunities for prospective research. This paper further concludes that there is an outstanding rise in the accuracy, robustness, precision and generalization ability of the ML models in energy systems using hybrid ML models. Hybridization is reported to be effective in the advancement of prediction models, particularly for renewable energy systems, e.g., solar energy, wind energy, and biofuels. Moreover, the energy demand prediction using hybrid models of ML have highly contributed to the energy efficiency and therefore energy governance and sustainability

Recent years have witnessed an upsurge in the penetration of solar and wind power. This can be chiefly attributed to worldwide climate concern and inclination towards low carbon sources. Owing to their abundant availability, solar and wind sources are projected to play a key part in de-carbonization of power sector. However, the variability of these sources and high initial cost pose a major challenge in their deployment. Thus, reliability and economic assessment is imperative to hybrid power system(HPS) with solar and wind integration. This paper tenders a survey on different aspects involved in reliability and economic assessment of HPS. Various techniques employed in uncertainty modelling of climatological parameters like solar irradiance and wind velocity have been deliberated. A detailed discussion on reliability evaluation parameters as well as techniques along with their merits and demerits has been carried out. In order to impart a sense of extensiveness to review, a discussion on economic evaluation metrics has also been presented. Further, author’s critical comments on review along with suggestions for possible research avenues has also been presented. The review presented in this paper is envisioned to facilitate a comprehensive guide towards evaluation of solar and wind energy based HP

Electricity price forecasting is one of the more complex processes, due to its non-linearity and highly varying nature. However, in today\u27s deregulated market and smart grid environment, the forecasted price is one of the important data sources used by producers in the bidding process. It also helps the consumer know the hourly price in order to manage the monthly electricity price. In this paper, a novel electricity price forecasting method is presented, based on the Artificial Bee Colony optimized Extreme Learning Machine (ABC-ELM) with wavelet decomposition technique. This has been attempted with two different input data formats. Each data format is decomposed using wavelet decomposition, Daubechies Db4 at level 6; all the decomposed data are forecasted using the proposed method and aggregate is formed for the final prediction. This prediction has been attempted in three different electricity markets, in Finland, Switzerland and India. The forecasted values of the three different countries, using the proposed method are compared with various other methods, using graph plots and error metrics and the proposed method is found to provide better accuracy
