New mathematical foundations for AI and Alife: Are the necessary conditions for animal consciousness sufficient for the design of intelligent machines?
Rodney Brooks' call for 'new mathematics' to revitalize the disciplines of artificial intelligence and artificial life can be answered by adaptation of what Adams has called 'the informational turn in philosophy' and by the novel perspectives that program gives into empirical studies of animal cognition and consciousness. Going backward from the necessary conditions communication theory imposes on cognition and consciousness to sufficient conditions for machine design is, however, an extraordinarily difficult engineering task. The most likely use of the first generations of conscious machines will be to model the various forms of psychopathology, since we have little or no understanding of how consciousness is stabilized in humans or other animals
Culture and generalized inattentional blindness
A recent mathematical treatment of Baars' Global Workspace consciousness model, much in the spirit of Dretske's communication theory analysis of high level mental function, is used to study the effects of embedding cultural heritage on a generalized form of inattentional blindness. Culture should express itself quite distinctly in this basic psychophysical phenomenon, acting across a variety of sensory and other modalities, because the limited syntactic and grammatical 'bandpass' of the topological rate distortion manifold characterizing conscious attention is itself strongly sculpted by the constraints of cultural context
Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey
Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system
PAC: A Novel Self-Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Controller for Micro Aerial Vehicles
There exists an increasing demand for a flexible and computationally
efficient controller for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) due to a high degree of
environmental perturbations. In this work, an evolving neuro-fuzzy controller,
namely Parsimonious Controller (PAC) is proposed. It features fewer network
parameters than conventional approaches due to the absence of rule premise
parameters. PAC is built upon a recently developed evolving neuro-fuzzy system
known as parsimonious learning machine (PALM) and adopts new rule growing and
pruning modules derived from the approximation of bias and variance. These rule
adaptation methods have no reliance on user-defined thresholds, thereby
increasing the PAC's autonomy for real-time deployment. PAC adapts the
consequent parameters with the sliding mode control (SMC) theory in the
single-pass fashion. The boundedness and convergence of the closed-loop control
system's tracking error and the controller's consequent parameters are
confirmed by utilizing the LaSalle-Yoshizawa theorem. Lastly, the controller's
efficacy is evaluated by observing various trajectory tracking performance from
a bio-inspired flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle (BI-FWMAV) and a rotary wing
micro aerial vehicle called hexacopter. Furthermore, it is compared to three
distinctive controllers. Our PAC outperforms the linear PID controller and
feed-forward neural network (FFNN) based nonlinear adaptive controller.
Compared to its predecessor, G-controller, the tracking accuracy is comparable,
but the PAC incurs significantly fewer parameters to attain similar or better

Prediction of microbial communities for urban metagenomics using neural network approach.
BACKGROUND:Microbes are greatly associated with human health and disease, especially in densely populated cities. It is essential to understand the microbial ecosystem in an urban environment for cities to monitor the transmission of infectious diseases and detect potentially urgent threats. To achieve this goal, the DNA sample collection and analysis have been conducted at subway stations in major cities. However, city-scale sampling with the fine-grained geo-spatial resolution is expensive and laborious. In this paper, we introduce MetaMLAnn, a neural network based approach to infer microbial communities at unsampled locations given information reflecting different factors, including subway line networks, sampling material types, and microbial composition patterns. RESULTS:We evaluate the effectiveness of MetaMLAnn based on the public metagenomics dataset collected from multiple locations in the New York and Boston subway systems. The experimental results suggest that MetaMLAnn consistently performs better than other five conventional classifiers under different taxonomic ranks. At genus level, MetaMLAnn can achieve F1 scores of 0.63 and 0.72 on the New York and the Boston datasets, respectively. CONCLUSIONS:By exploiting heterogeneous features, MetaMLAnn captures the hidden interactions between microbial compositions and the urban environment, which enables precise predictions of microbial communities at unmeasured locations
CES-485 Approximating the Set of Pareto Optimal Solutions in Both the Decision and Objective Spaces by an Estimation of Distribution Algorithm
Most existing multiobjective evolutionary algorithms aim at approximating the PF, the distribution of the Pareto optimal
solutions in the objective space. In many real-life applications, however, a good approximation to the PS, the distribution of the
Pareto optimal solutions in the decision space, is also required by a decision maker. This paper considers a class of MOPs, in
which the dimensionalities of the PS and PF are different so that a good approximation to the PF might not approximate the PS
very well. It proposes a probabilistic model based multiobjective evolutionary algorithm, called MMEA, for approximating the PS
and the PF simultaneously for a MOP in this class. In the modelling phase of MMEA, the population is clustered into a number
of subpopulations based on their distribution in the objective space, the PCA technique is used to detect the dimensionality of the
centroid of each subpopulation, and then a probabilistic model is built for modelling the distribution of the Pareto optimal solutions
in the decision space. Such modelling procedure could promote the population diversity in both the decision and objective spaces.
To ease the burden of setting the number of subpopulations, a dynamic strategy for periodically adjusting it has been adopted in
MMEA. The experimental comparison between MMEA and the two other methods, KP1 and Omni-Optimizer on a set of test
instances, some of which are proposed in this paper, have been made in this paper. It is clear from the experiments that MMEA
has a big advantage over the two other methods in approximating both the PS and the PF of a MOP when the PS is a nonlinear
manifold, although it might not be able to perform significantly better in the case when the PS is a linear manifold
