Shape interpretation with design computing
How information is interpreted has significant impact on how it can be used. This is particularly important in design where information from a wide variety of sources is used in a wide variety of contexts and in a wide variety of ways. This paper is concerned with the information that is created, modified and analysed during design processes, specifically with the information that is represented in shapes. It investigates how design computing seeks to support these processes, and the difficulties that arise when it is necessary to consider alternative interpretations of shape. The aim is to establish the problem of shape interpretation as a general challenge for research in design computing, rather than a difficulty that is to be overcome within specific processes. Shape interpretations are common characteristics of several areas of enquiry in design computing. This paper reviews these, brings an integrated perspective and draws conclusions about how this underlying process can be supported
Design and semantics of form and movement (DeSForM 2006)
Design and Semantics of Form and Movement (DeSForM) grew from applied research exploring emerging design methods and practices to support new generation product and interface design. The products and interfaces are concerned with: the context of ubiquitous computing and ambient technologies and the need for greater empathy in the pre-programmed behaviour of the ‘machines’ that populate our lives. Such explorative research in the CfDR has been led by Young, supported by Kyffin, Visiting Professor from Philips Design and sponsored by Philips Design over a period of four years (research funding £87k). Towards an Indexical Model of Situated Language Comprehension for Cognitive Agents in Physical Worlds
We propose a computational model of situated language comprehension based on
the Indexical Hypothesis that generates meaning representations by translating
amodal linguistic symbols to modal representations of beliefs, knowledge, and
experience external to the linguistic system. This Indexical Model incorporates
multiple information sources, including perceptions, domain knowledge, and
short-term and long-term experiences during comprehension. We show that
exploiting diverse information sources can alleviate ambiguities that arise
from contextual use of underspecific referring expressions and unexpressed
argument alternations of verbs. The model is being used to support linguistic
interactions in Rosie, an agent implemented in Soar that learns from

MaestROB: A Robotics Framework for Integrated Orchestration of Low-Level Control and High-Level Reasoning
This paper describes a framework called MaestROB. It is designed to make the
robots perform complex tasks with high precision by simple high-level
instructions given by natural language or demonstration. To realize this, it
handles a hierarchical structure by using the knowledge stored in the forms of
ontology and rules for bridging among different levels of instructions.
Accordingly, the framework has multiple layers of processing components;
perception and actuation control at the low level, symbolic planner and Watson
APIs for cognitive capabilities and semantic understanding, and orchestration
of these components by a new open source robot middleware called Project Intu
at its core. We show how this framework can be used in a complex scenario where
multiple actors (human, a communication robot, and an industrial robot)
collaborate to perform a common industrial task. Human teaches an assembly task
to Pepper (a humanoid robot from SoftBank Robotics) using natural language
conversation and demonstration. Our framework helps Pepper perceive the human
demonstration and generate a sequence of actions for UR5 (collaborative robot
arm from Universal Robots), which ultimately performs the assembly (e.g.

A Semantic Collaboration Method Based on Uniform Knowledge Graph
The Semantic Internet of Things is the extension of the Internet of Things and the Semantic Web, which aims to build an interoperable collaborative system to solve the heterogeneous problems in the Internet of Things. However, the Semantic Internet of Things has the characteristics of both the Internet of Things and the Semantic Web environment, and the corresponding semantic data presents many new data features. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of semantic data and propose the concept of a uniform knowledge graph, allowing us to be applied to the environment of the Semantic Internet of Things better. Here, we design a semantic collaboration method based on a uniform knowledge graph. It can take the uniform knowledge graph as the form of knowledge organization and representation, and provide a useful data basis for semantic collaboration by constructing semantic links to complete semantic relation between different data sets, to achieve the semantic collaboration in the Semantic Internet of Things. Our experiments show that the proposed method can analyze and understand the semantics of user requirements better and provide more satisfactory outcomes
An exploration into aesthetic association of product form
Creating a relevant and pleasing design aesthetic is a fundamental aim designers
endeavour to achieve. Perception of aesthetics takes place both during the design
process when the designer creates a form, and later, through the users’
interpretation of the form. Within the perception process, association plays a
significant role. This paper addresses the stage research results of our exploration
into the associative meanings of a product. By analysing the evaluation of a series of
top award winning designs, it was found that some associative meanings
(represented by descriptive words) are correlated, such as ‘pure-architecturalgeometrical’,
‘delicate-curvaceous-organic’ etc. By conducting a series of
workshops, both in the UK and China, we have been able to explore the extent to
which young designers are able to manipulate form, style and create an overall
perception of a positive aesthetic. One of the main outputs during the workshops
was to design a MP3 player with speaker units, styled in line with three topics of
aesthetic association: topic 1 – pure, architectural, geometrical and technical; topic 2 – curvaceous, organic, and fun; topic 3 – graceful, cheerful, and powerful. Three non-correlated associative descriptors were deliberately used in topic 3. Results suggest that young designers tend to differ in their ability and success of manipulating form to match different aesthetic targets. When the descriptive words in one aesthetic topic are correlated, student designers seem to find it easier to manipulate the form matching the topic.
