    Get PDF
We’ve all heard stories of students struggling with textbook costs, but how do our students cope when the price gets too high? Modeled after the Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey conducted by Florida Virtual Campus, Musselman Library’s course materials survey sought to uncover how textbook costs impact the success of Gettysburg College students. Results give insight into participants’ perceptions of how much money they spend, the strategies they use to reduce costs, and the effects of the cost of course materials on their academic success. The Executive Summary details our research questions, key findings, and main takeaways

How do refugees resist humanitarian corruption?

    Get PDF
The success of many refugee-oriented humanitarian-development organisations can be inconclusive, with some programmes shown to further marginalise the very people they purport to help. Less well documented is how refugees resist programmatic failure. Based on research in Palabek Refugee Settlement in Uganda, LSE’s Dr Ryan Joseph O’Byrne explores how refugees’ resistance to humanitarian-development failure should be understood as positive, if unintended, examples of how marginalised populations try to adapt, survive and cope

Examining the Impact of Parental Socialization on the Coping Styles of Black Graduate Students Faced with Microaggressions

    Get PDF
This article explores case examples of two graduate students who endure microaggressions from their math professor at a predominantly White university. The role that parental socialization plays in how these students developed their racial identities and the coping strategies they employed, is analyzed through the lens of Triple Quandary theory (Boykin and Toms 1 985). Findings from this investigation suggest that parental socialization is critical in preparing these students to cope with and respond to microaggressions in protective and adaptive ways. This paper illuminates coping styles, although divergent, that served these graduate students\u27 needs and protected their individual racial identities. Further, the support these students received from their faculty advisor who is also Black, exemplifies the importance of mentorship and advocacy from faculty of color to Black college students\u27 success. Direction for continuity in parental teachings for K-12 and university level educators are discussed

Why New Business Development Projects Fail: Coping with the Differences of Technological versus Market Knowledge

    Get PDF
Managing through projects has become important for generating new knowledge to cope with technological and market discontinuities. This paper examines how the fit between the creation of technological and market knowledge and important project management characteristics, i.e. project autonomy and completion criteria, influences the success of new business development (NBD) projects. In-depth longitudinal case research on NBD-projects commercialised during the period 1993-2003 in the consumer electronics industry highlights that project management characteristics focusing only on the creation of technological knowledge contributed to the failure of those NBD-projects that required new market knowledge as well. The findings indicate that senior management support and engaging in an alliance with partners possessing complementary market knowledge can offset this misalignment of the organisation of NBD-projects.new product development;project management;strategic alliances;knowledge;new business development;exploitation-exploration;sales force

The difficulties faced by school administrators working in disadvantaged schools and the effects of the administrator role they exhibit on the success of teachers and students

The aim of this study is to identify the difficulties faced by school principals working in disadvantaged schools in order to raise students with 21st century skills and to ensure the continuity of school success, and to examine the effect of the role of school principal on teacher and student success. The study group includes 10 school principals from primary schools located in disadvantaged regions of Istanbul. In the study, a phenomenological qualitative research design was used and the snowball sampling method, a purposeful sampling method, was employed. In order to achieve the aim of the study, participants were asked the following questions: 1. What kind of problems do you encounter in your school? 2. What methods do you use to deal with the problems? 3. How do you support your teachers who cannot cope with their problems? 4.How do you support troubled students to cope with their problems? Through the study, several problems faced by the principals emerged: financial constraints, lack of commitment to the school, socio-economic structure of the school environment, and the socio-cultural structure of the school environment. The study also shows that to address these problems, school principals lead teachers' professional knowledge by displaying "correct communication", "resilience", "flexibility and positive thinking", and they try to create a positive school climate. In addition, it was determined that principals’ approach problematic students caringly, gaining their trust and trying to find solutions to their problems. Such an approach creates positive changes in teachers’ and students' attitudes and behaviors toward the school and increases academic success. The main finding in this study is that school principals' experiences in dealing with difficulties can be a guide to other colleagues in how to deal with difficulties

Women, failure and the fear of loss

Book abstract: In consumer economies, success has increasingly been defined in terms of material attainment and the achievement of status. This model of 'the good life' and its formulas for success ignore the haunting possibility that one may not succeed and as a result be deemed 'a failure'. How to be a Failure and Still Live Well explores that often neglected theme of failure, not just as the opposite of achievement, but also, and more importantly, how it has been conflated with loss: that which haunts all transient, mortal human experience. Understanding loss as a form of failure affects our ability to cope with the everyday losses that permeate existence as a result of the natural processes of ageing, death, and decay. Engaging with loss and thinking about what it inevitability means for our lives and commitments, allows different values to emerge than those connected to success as attainment. Relationships, spontaneity, and generosity are explored as qualities that arise from taking seriously our vulnerability and that form the basis for richer accounts of what it might mean to 'live well'

The paper present a series of contributions to the development of a model of eco technologic organization. Managers of various organizations generally recognized the need for change, as a way to cope with competitive pressures, but many do not understand how the change should be implemented. The key to success is to integrate employees, their roles and responsibilities within the organization in a structure of processes. A process-based approach and starting with the declaration of vision and mission, analyzing critical success factors and identifying the basic processes, it is the most effective way of employment of staff in the process of change In these conditions paper addresses notions of implementation of the change in the industrial organizations: organizational change process, consequences of ignoring the change, internal and external factors of change, actions needing chang

The professional career of sociologists: a graphical chain model reflecting early influences and associations

    Get PDF
Currently, German universities take great interest in how their students perform in later professional life. Information on early determinants of success is needed in order to adjust educational programs and to cope more easily with the expected increase in the number of students in the coming years. In this paper we analyze data on the occupational careers of sociologists. The complexity of the underlying research question is taken into account by modelling the associations using so--called graphical chain models. These models are in general constructed such that conditional independencies can be concluded from the corresponding graph. We present the different steps in formulating the dependence structure. For checking its appropriateness, a model selection strategy is applied based on regression techniques. The final graph gives essential hints with respect to early determinants for professional success
