    The Role of Mentoring and Project Characteristics for Onboarding in Open Source Software Projects

    Context: Onboarding is a process that helps newcomers become integrated members of their organisation. Successful onboarding programs can result in increased performance in conventional organisations, but there is little guidance on how to onboard new developers in Open Source Software (OSS) projects. Goal: In this study, we examine how mentoring and project characteristics influence the effectiveness and efficiency of the onboarding process. We study a collaboration program involving a total of nine Open Source Software projects and more than 120 students from different universities around the world as part of Facebook's Education Modernization Program. Method: We use quantitative measurements of source code repositories, issue tracking systems, and discussion fora to examine how newcomers become contributing members of their OSS projects. Results: We found that developers receiving deliberate onboarding support through mentoring were more active at an earlier stage than developers entering projects through conventional means. Also, we found that project size and lifetime influenced onboarding. Conclusion: Empirical decision support can contribute to a more effective onboarding process in OSS projects. Mentor support in critical stages can accelerate the process, but project maturity is also a significant factor that increases the effect of onboarding.Peer reviewe

    Key Elements For A Successful Employee Onboarding Program

    This capstone focuses on examining key elements of employee-onboarding success in organizations. From the literature, the author extracted three crucial factors contributing to effective onboarding models, Relationship-Building, Organizational Support, and Communication, and proposed a hypothesis: These three key elements are contributing to onboarding success. Then, the author identified four outstanding employee onboarding models from Netflix, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google, by using the criteria from several human resource specialized websites. In the analysis, the author examined the three elements in the four onboarding models and found out that all the factors contributed to employee onboarding success individually and collectively. Furthermore, the author proposed that “People” is a core value of a successful employee onboarding process for organizations. This paper strongly suggests that it would be worth pursuing with a larger study to examine the three elements and extract more factors

    SUPPORTING DEVELOPER-ONBOARDING WITH ENHANCED RESOURCE FINDING AND VISUAL EXPLORATION

    Understanding the basic structure of a code base and a development team are essential to get new developers up to speed in a software development project. Developers do so through the process of early experimentation with code and the creation of mental models of technical and social structures in a project. However, getting up-to-speed in a new project can be challenging due to difficulties in: finding the right place to begin explorations, expanding the focus to determine relevant resources for tasks, and identifying dependencies across project elements to gain a high-level overview of project structures. In this thesis, I first identified six challenges that developers face during the process of developer onboarding from recent research studies and informal interviews with developers. To address these challenges, I implemented automated tool support with enhanced resource finding and visual exploration. Specifically, I proposed six functional requirements for supporting developers onboarding. I then extended the project tool Tesseract to support these functionalities to help novice developers and relevant resources (files, developers, bugs, etc.) and understand project structures when joining a new project. To understand how the onboarding functionalities work in supporting developers\u27 onboarding process, I conducted a user study with typical onboarding tasks requiring early experimentation and internalizing project structures. The results indicated that enhanced search features, the ability to explore semantic relationships across repositories, and network-centric visualizations of project structures were very effective in supporting onboarding

    A Study of Documentation for Software Architecture

    Documentation is an important mechanism for disseminating software architecture knowledge. Software project teams can employ vastly different formats for documenting software architecture, from unstructured narratives to standardized documents. We explored to what extent this documentation format may matter to newcomers joining a software project and attempting to understand its architecture. We conducted a controlled questionnaire-based study wherein we asked 65 participants to answer software architecture understanding questions using one of two randomly-assigned documentation formats: narrative essays, and structured documents. We analyzed the factors associated with answer quality using a Bayesian ordered categorical regression and observed no significant association between the format of architecture documentation and performance on architecture understanding tasks. Instead, prior exposure to the source code of the system was the dominant factor associated with answer quality. We also observed that answers to questions that require applying and creating activities were statistically significantly associated with the use of the system's source code to answer the question, whereas the document format or level of familiarity with the system were not. Subjective sentiment about the documentation format was comparable: Although more participants agreed that the structured document was easier to navigate and use for writing code, this relation was not statistically significant. We conclude that, in the limited experimental context studied, our results contradict the hypothesis that the format of architectural documentation matters. We surface two more important factors related to effective use of software architecture documentation: prior familiarity with the source code, and the type of architectural information sought.Comment: accepted to EMSE
