How to Exploit the Digitalization Potential of Business Processes

    Get PDF
Process improvement is the most value-adding activity in the business process management (BPM) lifecycle. Despite mature knowledge, many approaches have been criticized to lack guidance on how to put process improvement into practice. Given the variety of emerging digital technologies, organizations not only face a process improvement black box, but also high uncertainty regarding digital technologies. This paper thus proposes a method that supports organizations in exploiting the digitalization potential of their business processes. To achieve this, action design research and situational method engineering were adopted. Two design cycles involving practitioners (i.e., managers and BPM experts) and end-users (i.e., process owners and participants) were conducted. In the first cycle, the method’s alpha version was evaluated by interviewing practitioners from five organizations. In the second cycle, the beta version was evaluated via real-world case studies. In this paper, detailed results of one case study, which was conducted at a semiconductor manufacturer, are included

Digital transformation of gross domestic product

    Get PDF
Digital technologies introduced by the Industry 4.0 has brought significant changes to the private and public sectors of the world economy. Enterprises are challenged to capitalize on continuing advancement of digital innovation, governments are facing changes at macroeconomic level. The study is determined by the increasing confusion between measurements of gross domestic product (GDP) measurement and digital economy. Based on the literature review this paper aims to analyse how digital transformation affects GDP statistics. The paper is among a few studies, which concerns correlations between GDP and level of national digital transformation. The study sets out areas for future research of digital innovation adoption influence on the main macroeconomics indicator

A Model-Based Approach Towards the Conceptualization of Digital Twins: The Case of the EU-Project COGITO

    Get PDF
In agile business ecosystems, digitalization is a key enabler for agility and flexibility. However, digital transformation is often challenging for instance due to unclear definitions and a lack of problem understanding. In this work this complexity is addressed with a model-based approach for conceptualizing digitalization and related meta modelling activities to enable the conceptual integration of diverse concepts. Existing modelling approaches – BPMN and ArchiMate – are leveraged with domain specific considerations that are relevant for the digitalization. The construction use case from the European project COGITO serves as a foundation for ideation and first requirements engineering. Physical experiments in the OMiLAB Innovation Environment are used as an experimental method towards identifying relevant digital twinning concepts, while modelling methods can be seen as an integration platform for physical and digital elements. Key digitalization aspects towards digital twinning are discussed and conceptualized in a meta model

Towards a Theory of Decentral Digital Process Ecosystems : Evidence from the Case of Digital Identities

    Get PDF
Blockchain could transform process management and usher in decentral digital process ecosystems. Such ecosystems present a paradigm shift from central control towards decentral coordination and we increasingly see them appear in various places. Here, we provide our idea of a theory of the emergence of these ecosystems and their theoretical constructs. Our theory builds on a single-case study in the area of digital identities for refugees in Europe

SITUATIONAL ROADMAP DEVELOPMENT FOR BUSINESS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT VIA A MODELING TOOL

    Get PDF
The integration of new technologies as well as the need to increase customer satisfaction and reduce costs require companies to continuously analyze and improve their business processes. Hence, Business Process Improvement (BPI) ranks high on the agenda of many companies. However, existing methods like Six Sigma are often perceived as overly complex for projects with a limited scope. Therefore, more and more companies focus on the application of a few selected BPI techniques only, which are logically arranged in the form of “roadmaps” to tackle process weaknesses. Against this backdrop, the concept of “tool-supported situational roadmap development for BPI” along with a corresponding prototype are introduced. The approach builds on conceptual modeling and is technically realized by means of a metamodeling platform. Accordingly, the research offers practitioners a solution to systematically create project-specific roadmaps for BPI to improve process performance

Harnessing Digital Transformation: A Pathway to Achieving the 2030 UNSDGs and Ensuring Sustainable Corporate Performance

    Get PDF
This chapter explores the essential intersection of digital transformation and sustainability within the context of contemporary business enterprises. It is based on the urgent need for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) 2030, and it underscores the transformative potential of digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain in reshaping sustainable business practices. This focuses on the switch from traditional, profit-driven models to models that prioritize people, profits, and the planet. The critical conclusion is the emancipation of stakeholders who have evolved from being passive receivers of CSR activities to become active collaborators in sustainability initiatives enabled by digital advances. In addition to that, the barriers that naturally occur because of the digital divide and ethical hurdles must be collectively resolved. Ultimately, it reverts back to the narrow, yet arduous path that leads to the shared value; cooperation and innovation as a way forward to a sustainable digital future

Towards a Governance of Low-Code Development Platforms Using the Example of Microsoft PowerPlatform in a Multinational Company

    Get PDF
The advantages of low-code platforms include the ability to better manage corporate processes. These processes can quickly become customized and business critical. Consequently, governance of low-code development platforms gains increasing importance in the IT sector. This paper contributes to the design of a governance for low-code platforms using the example of Microsoft PowerPlatform through the action-design- research-paradigm within a consumer goods corporation. The paper shows both the relationship between IT governance and low-code platforms and what challenges this poses, as well as the importance of governance of low-code platforms in relation to the field of end-user computing. This work aims at developing governance for low-code platforms, and evaluates it using several methods. Based on the results of the naturalistic evaluation, design principles for the development of a governance for low-code platforms are derived. The principles summarize suggestions for designing such governance, providing evidence-based design knowledge for developing governance of low-code platforms
