    A Good Friend Will Help You Move a Body: Friendship and the Problem of Moral Disagreement

    Get PDF
    On the shared-ends account of close friendship, proper care for a friend as an agent requires seeing yourself as having important reasons to accommodate and promote the friend’s valuable ends for her own sake. However, that friends share ends doesn't inoculate them against disagreements about how to pursue those ends. This paper defends the claim that, in certain circumstances of reasonable disagreement, proper care for a friend as a practical and moral agent sometimes requires allowing her judgment to decide what you are to do, even when you disagree with her judgment (and even when her judgment is in fact mistaken). In these instances, your friendship can make it the case that you may not act on your own practical and even moral judgments because, at those times, you have a duty as her close friend to defer to her judgments. As a result, treating your friend properly as a responsible agent can require that you assist her in committing what may in fact be serious moral wrongs

    Maximum deviation curves for location estimators.

    Get PDF
    The maximum deviation curve of an estimator describes how an estimate can change (in the worst case) when you replace m out of n ''good'' observations to arbitrary positions. This function will be computed for some robust univariate location estimators. A lower bound for this curve is derived, and it is shown that this bound can be attained Trimmed means will always be close to this lower bound. When more than one third of the observations is contaminated, the median also gets to the lower bound. Finally, it is shown that a high breakdown point leads to a relatively large maximum deviation in the presence of small amounts of contaminants. The maximum deviation curve approach is based on the finite sample behavior of the estimators and makes no distributional assumptions.bias curve; breakdown point; location estimator; maximum deviation; robustness; sensitivity; regression;

    Helping Quarterlife Students Make Sense of Anguish: A Personal Examination of How Traumatic Life Events Lead to Growth and Meaning Making

    Get PDF
    Making sense of anguish is an important process leading to personal growth, development, and overall meaning making. Today\u27s quarterlife students (students between the ages of 20-25) may face a variety of traumatic life events that influence how they grow as individuals and are able to move forward from these experiences. I examine several topics that many quarterlife students experience during these challenging years. As a gay identified individual, I examine aspects of `coming out\u27 and the reluctance of blooming into the individual that I wanted to be. I examine the impact of resenting those individuals who may have hurt you and the ultimate growth that results from the pursuit of forgiveness. I then examine the importance of not sacrificing who you are within romantic relationships, and how being in abusive relationships can inhibit one\u27s ability to be happy. Lastly, I close with how despite all of the traumatic experiences one must overcome, we all have the ability to be happy and construct positive meaning from such times of anguish. Written within a scholarly personal narrative methodology, my thesis examines several generational life events that have the potential to cause anguish, and how one can harness personal growth and meaning making from traumatic past experiences

    Some 4 billion people in the world live in physically water-scarce areas and 844 million don't have access to clean water close to home.The world's water crisis is getting worse, yet globally we use six times as much water today as we did 100 years ago, driven by population growth and changes in diets and consumer habits.This report reveals the countries where the largest populations live with physical water scarcity, how ballooning consumer demands jeopardise water access for the poorest and most marginalised people, and how making thoughtful choices as consumers can help ensure access to water for basic needs is prioritised – wherever you are in the world

    Shifting A Culture

    Get PDF
    What is popular culture and how does it influence us? How can we be more critically aware consumers of media messages? Are we always online , or is there some way we can disconnect? These are the questions I\u27ve attempted to define through my research and experience studying contemporary pop culture . Consider this a beginner’s guide on how to become aware of and deal with the constant bombardment of media messages, and how to become a filter for content, rather than a sponge. As critical consumers of media we can cater our consumption to better suit our needs and lifestyles. This paper was mainly intended to raise awareness, but also to motivate and inspire us to: disconnect from the noise of society, to get out in nature, and to be positive role models for future generations. I’ve come to the conclusion that you can never fully disconnect, but we can get close if we really try. The important thing is to find a healthy balance, once we become aware of the pervasiveness of media influence in our lives
