Where in the World are the Women of Time? Women and the Person of the Year Covers for Time Magazine

Through a content analysis of Time magazine\u27s Person of the Year issue, formerly titled Man of the Year, this thesis examines how the news magazine has reevaluated and revised the once gender suggestive title to a more inclusive title in correlation to the portrayal of women featured on the covers from both past and present. This thesis also provides background on the feminist theory in order to put into perspective the professional and intellectual growth of women throughout the decades. The supporting literature contextualizes the findings with reference to other mainstream magazines and the portrayal of women versus men featured on the covers. Findings support that the dominant ideology of white wealthy men is a consistent pattern throughout the covers. It also concludes that Time\u27s change in its title designation from Man of the Year to Person of the Year was largely symbolic and reflects no departure from the magazine\u27s 83-year history of this annual issue

The Rise of the News Aggregator: Legal Implications and Best Practices

During the past decade, the Internet has become an important news source for the majority of Americans. According to a study conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, as of January 2010, nearly 61% of Americans got at least some of their news online in a typical day. This increased reliance on the Internet as a source of news has coincided with declining profits in the traditional media and the shuttering of newsrooms in communities across the country. Some commentators look at this confluence of events and assert that, in this case, correlation equals causation -- the Internet is harming the news business.One explanation for the decline of the traditional media that some, including News Corporation owner Rupert Murdoch and Associated Press Chairman Dean Singleton, have seized upon is the rise of the news aggregator. According to this theory, news aggregators from Google News to The Huffington Post are free-riding, reselling and profiting from the factual information gathered by traditional media organizations at great cost. Murdoch has gone so far as to call Google's aggregation and display of newspaper headlines and ledes "theft." As the traditional media are quick to point out, the legality of a business model built around the monetization of third-party content isn't merely an academic question -- it's big business. Revenues generated from online advertising totaled $23.4 billion in 2008 alone.But for all of the heated rhetoric blaming news aggregators for the decline of journalism, many are still left asking the question: are news aggregators violating current law?This white paper attempts to answer that question by examining the hot news misappropriation and copyright infringement claims that are often asserted against aggregators, and to provide news aggregators with some "best practices" for making use of third-party content

Classification, Visualization, and Analysis of the Islamic State’s Narrative

The Islamic State (IS) declared the establishment of a Caliphate on June 29, 2014 in Mosul, Iraq. Since that declaration, IS has communicated a four-part narrative to the global community through Dabiq magazine, its e-publication. Each of the ten editions of Dabiq has provided insight into IS’s aspirations and reinforced its message of rejecting post-colonial structures. Critical to realizing its objective is establishing a foothold for the Caliphate through jihad (holy war), establishing legitimacy through jamaah (governance), achieving tawhid (unity), and expanding through hijrah (immigration). Each publication contains these narrative elements to document IS’s progress. Classifying, visualizing, and mapping will provide the analytical insight necessary to quantify the prioritization of IS narrative elements and identify the organization’s motivation

A Reexamination of the Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus collaris collaris) in Arkansas

Loss of suitable habitat is a threat to species worldwide. Habitat destruction, including loss, change, and fragmentation of habitat, is the leading cause of species extinction. Eastern collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris collaris) are habitat specialists on glades. Both C. c. collaris and glade habitats are rare and of special concern in the state of Arkansas. Many glade populations have already been extirpated in the Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri. Increasing knowledge of the distribution, habitat structure, and population dynamics of C. c. collaris is important to ensure the survival of this species in Arkansas. A literature review of the C. c. collaris is presented in Chapter 1. Lizard characteristics, glade habitat characteristics, and information on habitat change, loss, and fragmentation of glades are described. The main goal of my thesis, presented in Chapter 2, was to determine differences across sites in environmental variables, habitat variables, tree community structure, and lizard body condition. I sought to establish differences in these factors in 17 historical C. c. collaris sites (7 with lizard presence and 8 with lizard absence) and determine if the differences were correlated with the presence or absence of C. c. collarispopulations. Significant differences in some factors were found between present sites and absent sites. Environmental variables were not related to the presence or absence of C. c. collaris, indicating a habitat phenomenon rather than environmental. Lizard presence was correlated with habitat structure, as indicated in the ground and canopy cover surveys. Present sites had a positive correlation with rock and soil cover and a negative correlation with CWD, vegetation, and canopy cover; whereas absent sites had a positive correlation with CWD, vegetation, and canopy cover and a negative correlation with rock and soil cover. Present and absent sites had a significant difference in tree community structure. Absent sites had significantly larger trees and a higher frequency of trees compared to present sites. Lizard body condition was associated with the quality and openness of the glade. These data will prove useful in conservation efforts aimed at C. c. collaris recovery in Arkansas and other glade locations in the Ozarks
