Report on the Dagstuhl Seminar on Visualization and Monitoring of Network Traffic

The Dagstuhl Seminar on Visualization and Monitoring of Network Traffic took place May 17-20, 2009 in Dagstuhl, Germany. Dagstuhl seminars promote personal interaction and open discussion of results as well as new ideas. Unlike at most conferences, the focus is not solely on the presentation of established results but also, and in equal parts, to presentation of results, ideas, sketches, and open problems. The aim of this particular seminar was to bring together experts from the information visualization community and the networking community in order to discuss the state of the art of monitoring and visualization of network traffic. People from the different research communities involved jointly organized the seminar. The co-chairs of the seminar from the networking community were Aiko Pras (University of Twente) and Jürgen Schönwälder (Jacobs University Bremen). The co-chairs from the visualization community were Daniel A. Keim (University of Konstanz) and Pak Chung Wong (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory). Florian Mansmann (University of Konstanz) helped with producing this report. The seminar was organized and supported by Schloss Dagstuhl and the European Network of Excellence for the Management of Internet Technologies and Complex Systems (EMANICS)

Device and context influence on wireless infotainment access: A real world story

Copyright @ 2005 CEPISUser considerations are paramount when it comes to take up of technologies, and even more so in the case of mobile devices, in which the success of a particular device often depends on its novelty appeal. However, relatively little work has been undertaken exploring how day-to-day tasks are affected when mediated by such access devices. This paper reports the results of an empirical study placed in a 'real-world' setting, in which participants undertook typical infotainment - combined information and entertainment access tasks on three different wireless-enabled mobile devices. These were a laptop, a Personal Digital Assistant and a Head Mounted Display device. Our results show that, with the exception of participants' level of self-consciousness when using such devices in public environments, the user wireless infotainment access experience is generally unaffected by device type. Location was shown, though, to be a significant factor when users engage in tasks such as listening to online music or navigation

Transforming failure into success through organisational learning: An analysis of a manufacturing information system

This paper describes the idiosyncracies of a case study company, through highlighting issues and problems experienced during their attempts to evaluate, implement and realise the holistic implications of a manufacturing information system. Although the Information System (IS) was operational for a period of time, it was eventually deemed a failure. The reason for this was that a range of human and organisational factors prevented the organisation from embracing the full impact of the system. The eventual success of their information system was realised through a bespoke implementation, based upon a traditional systems development lifecycle that indirectly addressed learning issues following the earlier failed deployment. The paper highlights key issues relating to business success and failure, and then contrasts them alongside the presented case study. In doing so, the authors conclude by proposing methods through which manufacturing information systems can be transformed for business success. Context-awareness for mobile sensing: a survey and future directions

The evolution of smartphones together with increasing computational power have empowered developers to create innovative context-aware applications for recognizing user related social and cognitive activities in any situation and at any location. The existence and awareness of the context provides the capability of being conscious of physical environments or situations around mobile device users. This allows network services to respond proactively and intelligently based on such awareness. The key idea behind context-aware applications is to encourage users to collect, analyze and share local sensory knowledge in the purpose for a large scale community use by creating a smart network. The desired network is capable of making autonomous logical decisions to actuate environmental objects, and also assist individuals. However, many open challenges remain, which are mostly arisen due to the middleware services provided in mobile devices have limited resources in terms of power, memory and bandwidth. Thus, it becomes critically important to study how the drawbacks can be elaborated and resolved, and at the same time better understand the opportunities for the research community to contribute to the context-awareness. To this end, this paper surveys the literature over the period of 1991-2014 from the emerging concepts to applications of context-awareness in mobile platforms by providing up-to-date research and future research directions. Moreover, it points out the challenges faced in this regard and enlighten them by proposing possible solutions
