    Identifying disease-related expressions in reviews using conditional random fields

    As the as the volume of user-generated content in social media expands so do the potential benefits of mining social media to learn about patient conditions, drug indications, and beneficial or adverse drug reactions. In this paper, we apply Conditional Random Fields (CRF) model for extracting expressions related to diseases from patient comments. Our method utilizes hand-crafted features including contextual features, dictionaries, clusterbased and distributed word representation generated from unlabeled user posts in social media. We compare our CRF-based approach with deep recurrent neural networks and a dictionary-based approach. We examine different word embeddings generated from unlabeled user posts in social media and scientific literature. We show that CRF outperformed other methods and achieved the F1-measures of 69.1% and 79.4% on recognition of disease-related expressions in the exact and partial matching exercises, respectively. Qualitative evaluation of disease-related expressions recognized by our feature-rich CRF-based approach demonstrates the variability of reactions from patients with different health conditions

One of the best ways to extract emotions and thoughts from what people post in social media is through Sentiment Analysis (SA).This paper will propose a new framework that focuses on the application of sentiment analysis to assist the decision maker in understanding the real voice of the public in regard to property industry in Malaysia.The framework will consist of two components; sentiment classification at feature/aspect level and sentiment visualization to show the results of the analysis

    Sentiment Analysis of Short Informal Texts

    Abstract We describe a state-of-the-art sentiment analysis system that detects (a) the sentiment of short informal textual messages such as tweets and SMS (message-level task) and (b) the sentiment of a word or a phrase within a message (term-level task). The system is based on a supervised statistical text classification approach leveraging a variety of surfaceform, semantic, and sentiment features. The sentiment features are primarily derived from novel high-coverage tweet-specific sentiment lexicons. These lexicons are automatically generated from tweets with sentiment-word hashtags and from tweets with emoticons. To adequately capture the sentiment of words in negated contexts, a separate sentiment lexicon is generated for negated words. The system ranked first in the SemEval-2013 shared task 'Sentiment Analysis in Twitter' (Task 2), obtaining an F-score of 69.02 in the message-level task and 88.93 in the term-level task. Post-competition improvements boost the performance to an F-score of 70.45 (message-level task) and 89.50 (term-level task). The system also obtains state-ofthe-art performance on two additional datasets: the SemEval-2013 SMS test set and a corpus of movie review excerpts. The ablation experiments demonstrate that the use of the automatically generated lexicons results in performance gains of up to 6.5 absolute percentage points

    Sentiment analysis with limited training data

    Sentiments are positive and negative emotions, evaluations and stances. This dissertation focuses on learning based systems for automatic analysis of sentiments and comparisons in natural language text. The proposed approach consists of three contributions: 1. Bag-of-opinions model: For predicting document-level polarity and intensity, we proposed the bag-of-opinions model by modeling each document as a bag of sentiments, which can explore the syntactic structures of sentiment-bearing phrases for improved rating prediction of online reviews. 2. Multi-experts model: Due to the sparsity of manually-labeled training data, we designed the multi-experts model for sentence-level analysis of sentiment polarity and intensity by fully exploiting any available sentiment indicators, such as phrase-level predictors and sentence similarity measures. 3. LSSVMrae model: To understand the sentiments regarding entities, we proposed LSSVMrae model for extracting sentiments and comparisons of entities at both sentence and subsentential level. Different granularity of analysis leads to different model complexity, the finer the more complex. All proposed models aim to minimize the use of hand-labeled data by maximizing the use of the freely available resources. These models explore also different feature representations to capture the compositional semantics inherent in sentiment-bearing expressions. Our experimental results on real-world data showed that all models significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods on the respective tasks.Sentiments sind positive und negative Gefühle, Bewertungen und Einstellungen. Die Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit lernbasierten Systemen zur automatischen Analyse von Sentiments und Vergleichen in Texten in natürlicher Sprache. Die vorliegende Abeit leistet dazu drei Beiträge: 1. Bag-of-Opinions-Modell: Zur Vorhersage der Polarität und Intensität auf Dokumentenebene haben wir das Bag-of-Opinions-Modell vorgeschlagen, bei dem jedes Dokument als ein Beutel Sentiments dargestellt wird. Das Modell kann die syntaktischen Strukturen von subjektiven Ausdrücken untersuchen, um eine verbesserte Bewertungsvorhersage von Online-Rezensionen zu erzielen. 2. Multi-Experten-Modell: Wegen des Mangels an manuell annotierten Trainingsdaten haben wir das Multi-Experten-Modell entworfen, um die Sentimentpolarität und -intensität auf Satzebene zu analysieren. Das Modell kann alle möglichen Sentiment-Indikatoren verwenden, wie Prädiktoren auf Phrasenebene und Ähnlichkeitsmaße von Sätzen. 3. LSSVMrae-Modell: Um Sentiments von Entitäten zu verstehen, wir haben wir das LSSVMrae-Modell zur Extraktion von Sentiments und Vergleichen von Entitäten auf Satz- und Ausdrucksebene vorgeschlagen. Die unterschiedliche Granularität der Analyse führt zu unterschiedlicher Modellkomplexität; je feiner, desto komplexer. Alle vorgeschlagenen Modelle zielen darauf ab, möglichst wenige manuell annotierte Daten und möglichst viele frei verfügbare Ressourcen zu verwenden. Diese Modelle untersuchen auch verschiedene Merkmalsdarstellungen, um die Kompositionssemantik abzubilden, die subjektiven Ausdrücken inhärent ist. Die Ergebnisse unserer Experimente mit Realweltdaten haben gezeigt, dass alle Modelle für die jeweiligen Aufgaben deutlich bessere Leistungen erzielen als die modernsten Methoden

    Acquiring Broad Commonsense Knowledge for Sentiment Analysis Using Human Computation

    While artificial intelligence is successful in many applications that cover specific domains, for many commonsense problems there is still a large gap with human performance. Automated sentiment analysis is a typical example: while there are techniques that reasonably aggregate sentiments from texts in specific domains, such as online reviews of a particular product category, more general models have a poor performance. We argue that sentiment analysis can be covered more broadly by extending models with commonsense knowledge acquired at scale, using human computation. We study two sentiment analysis problems. We start with document-level sentiment classification, which aims to determine whether a text as a whole expresses a positive or a negative sentiment. We hypothesize that extending classifiers to include the polarities of sentiment words in context can help them scale to broad domains. We also study fine-grained opinion extraction, which aims to pinpoint individual opinions in a text, along with their targets. We hypothesize that extraction models can benefit from broad fine-grained annotations to boost their performance on unfamiliar domains. Selecting sentiment words in context and annotating texts with opinions and targets are tasks that require commonsense knowledge shared by all the speakers of a language. We show how these can be effectively solved through human computation. We illustrate how to define small tasks that can be solved by many independent workers so that results can form a single coherent knowledge base. We also show how to recruit, train, and engage workers, then how to perform effective quality control to obtain sufficiently high-quality knowledge. We show how the resulting knowledge can be effectively integrated into models that scale to broad domains and also perform well in unfamiliar domains. We engage workers through both enjoyment and payment, by designing our tasks as games played for money. We recruit them on a paid crowdsourcing platform where we can reach out to a large pool of active workers. This is an effective recipe for acquiring sentiment knowledge in English, a language that is known by the vast majority of workers on the platform. To acquire sentiment knowledge for other languages, which have received comparatively little attention, we argue that we need to design tasks that appeal to voluntary workers outside the crowdsourcing platform, based on enjoyment alone. However, recruiting and engaging volunteers has been more of an art than a problem that can be solved systematically. We show that combining online advertisement with games, an approach that has been recently proved to work well for acquiring expert knowledge, gives an effective recipe for luring and engaging volunteers to provide good quality sentiment knowledge for texts in French. Our solutions could point the way to how to use human computation to broaden the competence of artificial intelligence systems in other domains as well
