Scalable QoS-aware Mobility for Future Mobile Operators
Telecom operators and Internet service providers
are heading for a new shift in communications
paradigms. The forthcoming convergence
of cellular and wireless data networks is often
manifested in an âall IP approachâ in which all
communications are based on an end-to-end IP
protocol framework. The approach to network
design becomes user and service-centered, so
that continuous reachability of mobile users and
sustained communication capabilities are default
requirements for a prospective architecture. In
this article, we describe a network architecture
which is able to provide seamless communication
mobility, triggered either by the user or by the
network, across multiple technologies. The architecture
allows for media independent handovers
and supports optimized mobility and resource
management functions. The main focus of the
article is on major technical highlights of mobility
and quality-of-service (QoS) management subsystems

Self-Sustaining Caching Stations: Towards Cost-Effective 5G-Enabled Vehicular Networks
In this article, we investigate the cost-effective 5G-enabled vehicular
networks to support emerging vehicular applications, such as autonomous
driving, in-car infotainment and location-based road services. To this end,
self-sustaining caching stations (SCSs) are introduced to liberate on-road base
stations from the constraints of power lines and wired backhauls. Specifically,
the cache-enabled SCSs are powered by renewable energy and connected to core
networks through wireless backhauls, which can realize "drop-and-play"
deployment, green operation, and low-latency services. With SCSs integrated, a
5G-enabled heterogeneous vehicular networking architecture is further proposed,
where SCSs are deployed along roadside for traffic offloading while
conventional macro base stations (MBSs) provide ubiquitous coverage to
vehicles. In addition, a hierarchical network management framework is designed
to deal with high dynamics in vehicular traffic and renewable energy, where
content caching, energy management and traffic steering are jointly
investigated to optimize the service capability of SCSs with balanced power
demand and supply in different time scales. Case studies are provided to
illustrate SCS deployment and operation designs, and some open research issues

Mobility Management, Quality of Service, and Security in the Design of Next Generation Wireless Network
The next generation wireless network needs to provide seamless roaming among various access technologies in a heterogeneous environment. In allowing users to access any system at anytime and anywhere, the performance of mobility-enabled protocols is important. While Mobile IPv6 is generally used to support macro-mobility, integrating Mobile IPv6 with Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to support IP traffic will lead to improved mobility performance. Advanced resource management techniques will ensure Quality of Service (QoS) during real-time mobility within the Next Generation Network (NGN) platform. The techniques may use a QoS Manager to allow end-to-end coordination and adaptation of Quality of Service. The function of the QoS Manager also includes dynamic allocation of resources during handover. Heterogeneous networks raise many challenges in security. A security entity can be configured within the QoS Manager to allow authentication and to maintain trust relationships in order to minimize threats during system handover. Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation in Heterogeneous OFDMA-PONs Featuring Intelligent LTE-A Traffic Queuing

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other uses, in any current or future media, including reprinting/republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works, for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted component of this work in other works.A heterogeneous, optical/wireless dynamic bandwidth allocation framework is presented, exhibiting intelligent traffic queuing for practically controlling the quality-of-service (QoS) of mobile traffic, backhauled via orthogonal frequency division multiple accessâPON (OFDMA-PON) networks. A converged data link layer is presented between long term evolution-advanced (LTE-A) and next-generation passive optical network (NGPON) topologies, extending beyond NGPON2. This is achieved by incorporating in a new protocol design, consistent mapping of LTE-A QCIs and OFDMA-PON queues. Novel inter-ONU algorithms have been developed, based on the distribution of weights to allocate subcarriers to both enhanced node B/optical network units (eNB/ONUs) and residential ONUs, sharing the same infrastructure. A weighted, intra-ONU scheduling mechanism is also introduced to control further the QoS across the network load. The inter and intra-ONU algorithms are both dynamic and adaptive, providing customized solutions to bandwidth allocation for different priority queues at different network traffic loads exhibiting practical fairness in bandwidth distribution. Therefore, middle and low priority packets are not unjustifiably deprived in favor of high priority packets at low network traffic loads. Still the protocol adaptability allows the high priority queues to automatically over perform when the traffic load has increased and the available bandwidth needs to be rationally redistributed. Computer simulations have confirmed that following the application of adaptive weights the fairness index of the new scheme (representing the achieved throughput for each queue), has improved across the traffic load to above 0.9. Packet delay reduction of more than 40ms has been recorded as a result for the low priority queues, while high priories still achieve sufficiently low packet delays in the range of 20 to 30msPeer reviewe
