On the Design of Ambient Intelligent Systems in the Context of Assistive Technologies
The design of Ambient Intelligent Systems (AISs) is discussed in the
context of assistive technologies. The main issues include ubiquitous communications,
context awareness, natural interactions and heterogeneity, which are
analyzed using some examples. A layered architecture is proposed for heterogeneous
sub-systems integration with three levels of interactions that may be
used as a framework to design assistive AISs.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2001-1868-C0
Aortic Coarctation: Recent Developments in Experimental and Computational Methods to Assess Treatments for this Simple Condition
Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is often considered a relatively simple disease, but long-term outcomes suggest otherwise as life expectancies are decades less than in the average population and substantial morbidity often exists. What follows is an expanded version of collective work conducted by the authors\u27 and numerous collaborators that was presented at the 1st International Conference on Computational Simulation in Congenital Heart Disease pertaining to recent advances for CoA. The work begins by focusing on what is known about blood flow, pressure and indices of wall shear stress (WSS) in patients with normal vascular anatomy from both clinical imaging and the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. Hemodynamic alterations observed in CFD studies from untreated CoA patients and those undergoing surgical or interventional treatment are subsequently discussed. The impact of surgical approach, stent design and valve morphology are also presented for these patient populations. Finally, recent work from a representative experimental animal model of CoA that may offer insight into proposed mechanisms of long-term morbidity in CoA is presented
Labour Adjustment and Efficiency in Hungary
Transition from socialist to market economy brought drastic changes to the Hungarian labour market. Employment fell by 1.6 million, i.e., by more than 25% during the early transition period, while unemployment jumped from practically nil to over 14% within four years. The rapid economic growth of the recent years could only create relatively few jobs, even though the unemployment rate continuously declined, and is less than 6% since 2001. This paper describes labour adjustment after the transitional recession, and its relationship to corporate efficiency during the recovery period, based on a panel of medium-sized and large Hungarian firms. Labour demand is also related to firm level productive efficiency.labour demand, productive efficiency, firm in transition economy
A Coupled Experimental and Computational Approach to Quantify Deleterious Hemodynamics, Vascular Alterations, and Mechanisms of Long-Term Morbidity in Response to Aortic Coarctati
Introduction
Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is associated with morbidity despite treatment. Although mechanisms remain elusive, abnormal hemodynamics and vascular biomechanics are implicated. We present a novel approach that facilitates quantification of coarctation-induced mechanical alterations and their impact on vascular structure and function, without genetic or confounding factors. Methods
Rabbits underwent thoracic CoA at 10 weeks of age (~ 9 human years) to induce a 20 mm Hg blood pressure (BP) gradient using permanent or dissolvable suture thereby replicating untreated and corrected CoA. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was performed using imaging and BP data at 32 weeks to quantify velocity, strain and wall shear stress (WSS) for comparison to vascular structure and function as revealed by histology and myograph results. Results
Systolic and mean BP was elevated in CoA compared to corrected and control rabbits leading to vascular thickening, disorganization and endothelial dysfunction proximally and distally. Corrected rabbits had less severe medial thickening, endothelial dysfunction, and stiffening limited to the proximal region despite 12 weeks of normal BP (~ 4 human years) after the suture dissolved. WSS was elevated distally for CoA rabbits, but reduced for corrected rabbits. Discussion These findings are consistent with alterations in humans. We are now poised to investigate mechanical contributions to mechanisms of morbidity in CoA using these methods
From internet architecture research to standards
Many Internet architectural research initiatives have been undertaken over last twenty years. None of them actually reached their intended goal: the evolution of the Internet architecture is still driven by its protocols not by genuine architectural evolutions. As this approach becomes the main limiting factor of Internet growth and application deployment, this paper proposes an alternative research path starting from the root causes (the progressive depletion of the design principles of the Internet) and motivates the need for a common architectural foundation. For this purpose, it proposes a practical methodology to incubate architectural research results as part of the standardization process
CAN Fieldbus Communication in the CSP-based CT Library
In closed-loop control systems several realworld entities are simultaneously communicated to through a multitude of spatially distributed sensors and actuators. This intrinsic parallelism and complexity motivates implementing control software in the form of concurrent processes deployed on distributed hardware architectures. A CSP based occam-like architecture seems to be the most convenient for such a purpose. Many, often conflicting, requirements make design and implementation of distributed real-time control systems an extremely difficult task. The scope of this paper is limited to achieving safe and real-time communication over a CAN fieldbus for an\ud
existing CSP-based framework

Multi-scale interaction of flow and the artery wall
We discuss, from the perspective of basic science, the physical and biological processes which underlie atherosclerotic (plaque) initiation at the vascular endothelium, identifying their widely separated spatial and temporal scales which participate. We draw on current, related models of vessel wall evolution, paying particular attention to the role of flow, and proceed to propose, then validate (in practical, qualitative terms, at least) a multiply coupled, multi-scale modeling strategy, which, eventually, aims at a quantitative, patient-specific understanding of the coupling between the flow and the endothelial state
Emergent Orientation Selectivity from Random Networks in Mouse Visual Cortex
The connectivity principles underlying the emergence of orientation selectivity in primary visual cortex (V1) of mammals lacking an orientation map (such as rodents and lagomorphs) are poorly understood. We present a computational model in which random connectivity gives rise to orientation selectivity that matches experimental observations. The model predicts that mouse V1 neurons should exhibit intricate receptive fields in the two-dimensional frequency domain, causing a shift in orientation preferences with spatial frequency. We find evidence for these features in mouse V1 using calcium imaging and intracellular whole-cell recordings. Pattadkal et al. show that orientation selectivity can emerge from random connectivity, and offer a distinct perspective for how computations occur in the neocortex. They propose that a random convergence of inputs can provide signals for orientation preference in contrast with the dominant model that requires a precise arrangement.Fil: Pattadkal, Jagruti J..
