    Parameterized Algorithmics for Computational Social Choice: Nine Research Challenges

    Computational Social Choice is an interdisciplinary research area involving Economics, Political Science, and Social Science on the one side, and Mathematics and Computer Science (including Artificial Intelligence and Multiagent Systems) on the other side. Typical computational problems studied in this field include the vulnerability of voting procedures against attacks, or preference aggregation in multi-agent systems. Parameterized Algorithmics is a subfield of Theoretical Computer Science seeking to exploit meaningful problem-specific parameters in order to identify tractable special cases of in general computationally hard problems. In this paper, we propose nine of our favorite research challenges concerning the parameterized complexity of problems appearing in this context

    Extracting, Transforming and Archiving Scientific Data

    It is becoming common to archive research datasets that are not only large but also numerous. In addition, their corresponding metadata and the software required to analyse or display them need to be archived. Yet the manual curation of research data can be difficult and expensive, particularly in very large digital repositories, hence the importance of models and tools for automating digital curation tasks. The automation of these tasks faces three major challenges: (1) research data and data sources are highly heterogeneous, (2) future research needs are difficult to anticipate, (3) data is hard to index. To address these problems, we propose the Extract, Transform and Archive (ETA) model for managing and mechanizing the curation of research data. Specifically, we propose a scalable strategy for addressing the research-data problem, ranging from the extraction of legacy data to its long-term storage.     The Origin And Development Of Social Geography In Poland, With Special Emphasis On The Centre Of Geographical Studies In Łódź

Contemporary research problems, the treatment of research methodologies and theoretical concepts are undoubtedly closely related to the models stemming from the Anglo-Saxon geography. However, it is worth noting that while social geography abroad is part of extensive ideological and evaluative discussions, Polish social geography represents the behavioural trend under string influence of neo-scientistic methodology, which is caused by both the cognitive conservatism of the researchers and the prevailing social structure of Polish scientific community. The existing consensus based on models accepted in early 1980s and motivated by concession (selective) access to information is still hard to overcome. The dominance of quantitative methods and the lack of a broader theoretical (philosophical) reflection maintain mental clichés cause the research problems of social geography, both in theoretical sense and in the number of active researchers, to be taken over by other branches of science that are stronger in terms of theory, such as sociology, social anthropology or economics. The current reorientation of socio-economic geography towards spatial economy and management is, in our opinion, a kind of return to the known cognitive and methodological contents characteristic to the old economic geography in a new packaging and using modern research technologies (computers). The simultaneous lack of willingness to perform in-depth theoretical reflections (also characteristic of the entire Polish socio-economic geography) and the failure of social geographers to undertake major research challenges could lead to a crisis of this discipline in the institutional structure, followed by the regression in research, both in Poland and Łódź. We should hope that over the years, when the political, social and economic transformation is at last completed in Poland, full openness to ideas and free exchange of thoughts between geographers with various views will finally emerge. It seems that it could become an impulse to undertake new theoretical and methodological challenges and to solve the growing socio-spatial problems in the country

    The aim of the research is to analyse the wine market at Budget Liquor 2009 Limited to develop customer segmentation profiles, as the organisation wants to grow its wine market. It is a limited company, which is a SME. It is an off-license retail liquor business which offers alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to customers above the legal age of 18 and follows the rules and regulations of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. In this research, a SWOT Analysis of Budget Liquor 2009 Limited is done to identify the business strategies and challenges faced by it, internally and externally. As the alcohol business is a vast growing one, it has extended from liquor stores to pubs and super markets (Direct and Indirect competitors). In this research the literature review is done on various categories, such as small business in New Zealand, importance of a business plan, market segmentation, alcohol and wine industry. This research was conducted using mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative). Qualitative method involved a semi structured face to face interview of 30 to 40 minutes with the store owner and the store manager. Quantitative method involved a customer survey, conducted on a sample of 30 customers by placing the questionnaire in the form of a hard copy. The data obtained from these methods is helpful for the strategies to be followed in increasing the wine market. The findings from the customer survey and interviews about the wine market were helpful in analysing the problems related to product ranges, staff knowledge, and competitors. By analysing the problems there are certain recommendations given to the organisation to improve its wine market. Therefore, these recommendations must be implemented by the organisation immediately to increase its wine market

    A Survey of Methods for Handling Disk Data Imbalance

    Class imbalance exists in many classification problems, and since the data is designed for accuracy, imbalance in data classes can lead to classification challenges with a few classes having higher misclassification costs. The Backblaze dataset, a widely used dataset related to hard discs, has a small amount of failure data and a large amount of health data, which exhibits a serious class imbalance. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of research in the field of imbalanced data classification. The discussion is organized into three main aspects: data-level methods, algorithmic-level methods, and hybrid methods. For each type of method, we summarize and analyze the existing problems, algorithmic ideas, strengths, and weaknesses. Additionally, the challenges of unbalanced data classification are discussed, along with strategies to address them. It is convenient for researchers to choose the appropriate method according to their needs
