    Blind separation of underdetermined mixtures with additive white and pink noises

    This paper presents an approach for underdetermined blind source separation in the case of additive Gaussian white noise and pink noise. Likewise, the proposed approach is applicable in the case of separating I + 3 sources from I mixtures with additive two kinds of noises. This situation is more challenging and suitable to practical real world problems. Moreover, unlike to some conventional approaches, the sparsity conditions are not imposed. Firstly, the mixing matrix is estimated based on an algorithm that combines short time Fourier transform and rough-fuzzy clustering. Then, the mixed signals are normalized and the source signals are recovered using modified Gradient descent Local Hierarchical Alternating Least Squares Algorithm exploiting the mixing matrix obtained from the previous step as an input and initialized by multiplicative algorithm for matrix factorization based on alpha divergence. The experiments and simulation results show that the proposed approach can separate I + 3 source signals from I mixed signals, and it has superior evaluation performance compared to some conventional approaches

    Reproducibility of lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) assessment in endometrial cancer

    Aims Lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) in endometrial cancer (EC) is an important prognostic variable impacting on a patient's individual recurrence risk and adjuvant treatment recommendations. Recent work has shown that grading the extent of LVSI further improves its prognostic strength in patients with stage I endometrioid EC. Despite this, there is little information on the reproducibility of LVSI assessment in EC. Therefore, we designed a study to evaluate interobserver agreement in discriminating true LVSI from LVSI mimics (Phase I) and reproducibility of grading extent of LVSI (Phase II). Methods and results Scanned haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides of endometrioid EC (EEC) with a predefined possible LVSI focus were hosted on a website and assessed by a panel of six European gynaecological pathologists. In Phase I, 48 H&E slides were included for LVSI assessment and in Phase II, 42 H&E slides for LVSI grading. Each observer was instructed to apply the criteria for LVSI used in daily practice. The degree of agreement was measured using the two-way absolute agreement average-measures intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Reproducibility of LVSI assessment (ICC = 0.64, P < 0.001) and LVSI grading (ICC = 0.62, P < 0.001) in EEC was substantial among the observers. Conclusions Given the good reproducibility of LVSI, this study further supports the important role of LVSI in decision algorithms for adjuvant treatment

    The relationship between oestrogen receptor-alpha phosphorylation and the tumour microenvironment in patients with primary operable ductal breast cancer

    Aims: Although the role of phosphorylation of oestrogen receptor (ER) at serines 118 (p-S118) and 167 (p-S167) has been studied, the relationship between p-S118, p-S167 and the tumour microenvironment in ER-positive primary operable ductal breast cancers have not been investigated. The aims of this study are to investigate (i) the relationship between p-S118/p-S167 and the tumour microenvironment, and (ii) the effect of p-S118/167 on survival and recurrence in ER-positive primary operable ductal breast cancers. Methods and results: Patients presenting at three Glasgow hospitals between 1995 and 1998 with invasive ductal ER-positive primary breast cancers were studied (n = 294). Immunohistochemical staining of p-S118 and p-S167 was performed and their association with clinicopathological characteristics, cancer-specific survival (CSS) and recurrence-free interval (RFI) were examined. In the whole cohort, tumour size (P &lt; 0.05) and microvessel density (P &lt; 0.05) were associated with high p-S118 while increased micovessel density (P &lt; 0.05), apoptosis (P &lt; 0.05), general inflammatory infiltrate measured using the Klintrup–Makinen score (P &lt; 0.05) and macrophage infiltrate (P &lt; 0.05) were found to be associated with high p-S167. Only high p-S167 was associated with shorter CSS (P &lt; 0.005) and shorter RFI in the whole cohort (P = 0.001) and separately in the luminal A (P &lt; 0.05) and B tumours (P &lt; 0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that both p-S118 and p-S167 were associated with several microenvironmental factors, including increased microvessel density. In particular, p-S167 was associated with reduced RFI and CSS in the whole cohort and RFI in luminal A and B tumours and could possibly be employed to predict response to kinase inhibitors

    Testing BOI and BOB algorithms for solving the Winner Determination

Barcelona, 10-12 September 2008Combinatorial auctions are a promising auction format for allocating radio spectrum, as well as other goods. An important handicap of combinatorial auctions is determining the winner bids among many options, that is, solving the winner determination problem (WDP). This paper tackles this computational problem using two approaches in a combinatorial first-price sealed bid auction. The first one, is an A* based on items (BOI). The second one, is an A* based on bids (BOB). These two techniques are tested in several scenarios for allocating radio spectrum licenses. The results obtained reveal that the search algorithm A* with the BOB formulation outperforms the other and always finds the optimal solution very quickly
