The multitude of personal and shared interaction devices leads to lack of awareness of team members on ongoing activities, and awareness of who is in control of shared artefacts. This research addresses the situational awareness (SA) support of multidisciplinary teams in co-located collaborative environments.     Revisiting digital technologies: envisioning biodigital bodies

    In this paper the contemporary practices of human genomics in the 21st century are placed alongside the digital bodies of the 1990s. The primary aim is to provide a trajectory of the biodigital as follows: First, digital bodies and biodigital bodies were both part of the spectacular imaginaries of early cybercultures. Second, these spectacular digital bodies were supplemented in the mid-1990s by digital bodywork practices that have become an important dimension of everyday communication. Third, the spectacle of biodigital bodies is in the process of being supplemented by biodigital bodywork practices, through personal or direct-to-consumer genomics. This shift moves a form of biodigital communication into the everyday. Finally, what can be learned from putting the trajectories of digital and biodigital bodies together is that the degree of this communicative shift may be obscured through the doubled attachment of personal genomics to everyday digital culture and high-tech spectacle.Keywords: genomics, biodigital, bodies, spectacle, everyda

    The Role of Ethological Observation for Measuring Animal Reactions to Biotelemetry Devices

    This paper presents a methodological approach used to assess the wearability of biotelemetry devices in animals. A detailed protocol to gather quantitative and qualitative ethological observations was adapted and tested in an experimental study of 13 cat participants wearing two different GPS devices. The aim was twofold: firstly, to ascertain the potential interference generated by the devices on the animal body and behavior by quantifying and characterizing it; secondly, to individuate device features potentially responsible for the influence registered, and establish design requirements. This research contributes towards the development of a framework for evaluating the design of wearer-centered biotelemetry interventions for animals, consistent with values advocated by Animal- Computer Interaction researchers

    From Personal Genomics to Twitter: Visualizing the Uncertainty of Evidence

    Personal genomics offers a complex form of uncertainty in which a person’s data are largely stable, but the interpretation and implications continue to evolve with the emergence of new research. Another domain, in which there is uncertainty about the supporting evidence and truthfulness of a claim, is social networks. We propose that a similar method can be used to communicate uncertainty in these contexts, and present a tool for visualizing social network claims that builds upon research in both contexts

    Towards data grids for microarray expression profiles

    The UK DTI funded Biomedical Research Informatics Delivered by Grid Enabled Services (BRIDGES) project developed a Grid infrastructure through which research into the genetic causes of hypertension could be supported by scientists within the large Wellcome Trust funded Cardiovascular Functional Genomics project. The BRIDGES project had a focus on developing a compute Grid and a data Grid infrastructure with security at its heart. Building on the work within BRIDGES, the BBSRC funded Grid enabled Microarray Expression Profile Search (GEMEPS) project plans to provide an enhanced data Grid infrastructure to support richer queries needed for the discovery and analysis of microarray data sets, also based upon a fine-grained security infrastructure. This paper outlines the experiences gained within BRIDGES and outlines the status of the GEMEPS project, the open challenges that remain and plans for the future

    thesisDuring the 1990s, the search for breast cancer susceptibility genes identified several high-risk genes such as BRCA1&2, TP53, and PTEN. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw identification of the first intermediate risk genes, ATM, CHEK2, and PALB2. With time, however, the likelihood of identifying new high-risk genes is diminishing; on the other hand, the technology for hypothesis free, genome-wide identification of intermediate risk genes is still being developed. During the mid-2000s, the hunt for the genetic basis of breast cancer shifted toward genome-wide searches for modest risk breast cancer associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Here, we study a panel of 16 such SNPs as a polygene. We demonstrated that the polygene model works well for this panel, and that when viewed as a polygene, the composite risk for some individuals rises to a level comparable to an intermediate risk gene. We also find that the polygene model seems to better differentiate case-control status with increasing numbers of SNPs; therefore, we expect that the more SNPs that are added to the polygene model, the more accurately risk will be differentiated in the composite odds ratio (OR) and the closer the model will move toward medically actionable utility

    Applying a User-centred Approach to Interactive Visualization Design

    Analysing users in their context of work and finding out how and why they use different information resources is essential to provide interactive visualisation systems that match their goals and needs. Designers should actively involve the intended users throughout the whole process. This chapter presents a user-centered approach for the design of interactive visualisation systems. We describe three phases of the iterative visualisation design process: the early envisioning phase, the global specification hase, and the detailed specification phase. The whole design cycle is repeated until some criterion of success is reached. We discuss different techniques for the analysis of users, their tasks and domain. Subsequently, the design of prototypes and evaluation methods in visualisation practice are presented. Finally, we discuss the practical challenges in design and evaluation of collaborative visualisation environments. Our own case studies and those of others are used throughout the whole chapter to illustrate various approaches
