    SHRIMP EX-VESSEL PRICES LANDED FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO

    A 3SLS procedure is employed to analyze U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp ex-vessel prices by size class and import supplies using monthly time-series data for the period from 1981 to 1995. Results indicate that the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp ex-vessel prices are inflexible. Own-price flexibilities range from –0.0663 to –0.1027. Primary substitutes for U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp are cross-size U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp and imported supplies from South America.     Distribution and movement of suspended sediment in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast

    ERTS-1 imagery has proven very useful in studies of the distribution of suspended sediment in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast. Moreover, by using suspended matter concentrations as tags on water masses, much information on water movement can be obtained. The utility of suspended sediment as a tracer is dependent on the sediment remaining in suspension long enough to travel an appreciable distance or to be visible on successive images. Although the evidence is not conclusive, it seems likely that much of the suspended sediment in Gulf of Mexico nearshore waters during normal seastate conditions has remained in suspension since the time of its entry into the Gulf of Mexico through rivers and tidal inlets

    CHARACTERIZATION OF GULF STURGEON DIEL AND SEASONAL ACTIVITY IN THE PENSACOLA BAY SYSTEM, FLORIDA

    We assess temporal and spatial distribution and diel variability in activity of Gulf of Mexico sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi in the Pensacola Bay system, Florida, using stationary ultrasonic telemetry. Gulf of Mexico sturgeon (n = 54) migrated through the bay system in fall to wintering areas in the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound. In spring, sturgeon migrated back through the bay system to summering habitats in rivers. Gulf of Mexico sturgeon use East Bay and Escambia Bay primarily as migration routes between riverine areas used in spring and summer and the Gulf of Mexico used in winter. North Central Pensacola Bay was not routinely frequented. Gulf of Mexico sturgeon used specific areas within the Pensacola Bay system in summer and winter not previously documented as essential sturgeon habitat. Areas in southeastern Pensacola were used heavily during winter by a portion of the population. Gulf of Mexico sturgeon also exhibited long-term winter residency in Santa Rosa Sound. Interestingly, an area in northeastern Escambia Bay supported Gulf of Mexico sturgeon in summer. This observation was unexpected; however, the identification of Gulf of Mexico sturgeon in this area at this time has important ecological and management implications. Gulf of Mexico sturgeon exhibited a strong diel activity pattern. Gulf of Mexico sturgeon were more active at night than during day in all seasons but summer. The use of prepositioned arrays of acoustic receivers not only provides continuous data within a defined area, but provides insights into nocturnal behavior not previously examined

    We present an optical/infrared study of the dense molecular cloud, L935, dubbed "The Gulf of Mexico", which separates the North America and the Pelican nebulae, and we demonstrate that this area is a very active star forming region. A wide-field imaging study with interference filters has revealed 35 new Herbig-Haro objects in the Gulf of Mexico. A grism survey has identified 41 Halpha emission-line stars, 30 of them new. A small cluster of partly embedded pre-main sequence stars is located around the known LkHalpha 185-189 group of stars, which includes the recently erupting FUor HBC 722.Comment: Submitted to A&A, 14 pages, 18 figure

    Development of a computer model to predict platform station keeping requirements in the Gulf of Mexico using remote sensing data

    Offshore operations such as oil drilling and radar monitoring require semisubmersible platforms to remain stationary at specific locations in the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean currents, wind, and waves in the Gulf of Mexico tend to move platforms away from their desired locations. A computer model was created to predict the station keeping requirements of a platform. The computer simulation uses remote sensing data from satellites and buoys as input. A background of the project, alternate approaches to the project, and the details of the simulation are presented

    Northern Record for the Zooxanthellate Scleractinian Coral Siderastrea siderea (Ellis and Solander) from the Gulf of Mexico

    We report a northward range extension of the zooxanthellate scleractinian coral Siderastrea siderea (Ellis and Solander) in the Gulf of Mexico. Several small, living colonies of S. siderea have been obtained in dredge samples from a site located at 29Âş 55.5\u27 N, 087Âş 28.4\u27 W in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Prior to these collections the northernmost occurrence of S. siderea in the Gulf of Mexico was reported as 27Âş 54.5\u27 N, 093Âş 35.8\u27 W, on the East Flower Garden Bank, in the western Gulf of Mexico. In the eastern Gulf of Mexico, S. siderea is not reported occurring on the west Florida shelf north of the Florida Keys-Dry Tortugas or approximately 24Âş 55\u27 N

    This study examines the influence of Gulf of Mexico views on residential home sales prices in Pinellas County, Florida. We utilize Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) data to construct four continuous measures of Gulf of Mexico views – the total view, the maximum view segment, the mean view segment, and proximity to view content. Our results illustrate that residential property owners have a higher marginal willingness-to-pay for larger total views and larger continuous view segments. Results also indicate that the proximity of homes to the view content influences view valuations. Key Words:

    Reports on Fraser\u27s dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) strandings in the Gulf of Mexico are uncommon. The only recorded strandings from the Gulf of Mexico, both of which occurred in Florida, consist of one mass stranding and a single stranding. This report represents the first record of a Fraser\u27s dolphin stranding, dead or alive, in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, Results presented here provide the first available data on blood hematology and chemistry values, detailed anatomy of internal organs and structures, thoracic and abdominal organ weights, blubber thickness, external morphometries, and pathological findings for this species in the western Gulf of Mexico

    The Scientific Forum on the Gulf of Mexico: The Islands in the Stream Concept took place in January 2008 in Sarasota, Florida. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together scientists and managers from around the Gulf of Mexico to discuss a range of topics on our knowledge of the Gulf of Mexico, from its geology to larger-scale connectivity to the Caribbean region, and their applications to the concept of a more integrated approach to area-based management. The forum included six panels of invited experts who spoke on the oceanographic and biological features in the Gulf of Mexico, including connections with Mexico and the Mesoamerican barrier reef system, and the legal and regulatory structure currently in place. The charge to the group was to share information, identify gaps in our knowledge, identify additional potential areas for protection, and discuss available science about connectivity and the potential value of establishing a marine protected area network in the Gulf of Mexico.     An atlas of 1975 GEOS-3 radar altimeter data for hurricane/tropical disturbance studies, volume 1

    Geographic locations of 1975 hurricanes and other tropical disturbances were correlated with the closest approaching orbits of the GEOS-3 satellite and its radar altimeter. The disturbance locations and altimeter data were gathered for a seven-month period beginning with GEOS-3 launch in mid-April 1975. Areas of coverage were the Atlantic Ocean, the Carribean, the Gulf of Mexico, the west coast of the continental United States, and the central and western Pacific Ocean. Volume 1 contains disturbance coverage data for the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Eastern Pacific Ocean. Central and Western Pacific coverage is documented in Volume II
