Graphics Hardware Implementation of the Parameter-Less Self-Organising Map

    Get PDF
This paper presents a highly parallel implementation of a new type of Self-Organising Map (SOM) using graphics hardware. The Parameter-Less SOM smoothly adapts to new data while preserving the mapping formed by previous data. It is therefore in principle highly suited for interactive use, however for large data sets the computational requirements are prohibitive. This paper will present an implementation on commodity graphics hardware which uses two forms of parallelism to signi¯cantly reduce this barrier. The performance is analysed experi- mentally and algorithmically. An advantage to using graphics hardware is that visualisation is essentially free", thus increasing its suitability for interactive exploration of large data sets

    Engineering visualization utilizing advanced animation

    Get PDF
Engineering visualization is the use of computer graphics to depict engineering analysis and simulation in visual form from project planning through documentation. Graphics displays let engineers see data represented dynamically which permits the quick evaluation of results. The current state of graphics hardware and software generally allows the creation of two types of 3D graphics. The use of animated video as an engineering visualization tool is presented. The engineering, animation, and videography aspects of animated video production are each discussed. Specific issues include the integration of staffing expertise, hardware, software, and the various production processes. A detailed explanation of the animation process reveals the capabilities of this unique engineering visualization method. Automation of animation and video production processes are covered and future directions are proposed

    Realtime multi-plot graphics system

The increased complexity of test operations and customer requirements at Langley Research Center's National Transonic Facility (NTF) surpassed the capabilities of the initial realtime graphics system. The analysis of existing hardware and software and the enhancements made to develop a new realtime graphics system are described. The result of this effort is a cost effective system, based on hardware already in place, that support high speed, high resolution, generation and display of multiple realtime plots. The enhanced graphics system (EGS) meets the current and foreseeable future realtime graphics requirements of the NTF. While this system was developed to support wind tunnel operations, the overall design and capability of the system is applicable to other realtime data acquisition systems that have realtime plot requirements

On the Hardware Implementation of Triangle Traversal Algorithms for Graphics Processing

Current GPU architectures provide impressive processing rates in graphical applications because of their specialized graphics pipeline. However, little attention has been paid to the analysis and study of different hardware architectures to implement specific pipeline stages. In this work we have identified one of the key stages in the graphics pipeline, the triangle traversal procedure, and we have implemented three different algorithms in hardware: bounding-box, zig-zag and Hilbert curve-based. The experimental results show that important area-performance trade-offs can be met when implementing key image processing algorithms in hardwar
