    Distributed Reasoning in a Peer-to-Peer Setting: Application to the Semantic Web

    In a peer-to-peer inference system, each peer can reason locally but can also solicit some of its acquaintances, which are peers sharing part of its vocabulary. In this paper, we consider peer-to-peer inference systems in which the local theory of each peer is a set of propositional clauses defined upon a local vocabulary. An important characteristic of peer-to-peer inference systems is that the global theory (the union of all peer theories) is not known (as opposed to partition-based reasoning systems). The main contribution of this paper is to provide the first consequence finding algorithm in a peer-to-peer setting: DeCA. It is anytime and computes consequences gradually from the solicited peer to peers that are more and more distant. We exhibit a sufficient condition on the acquaintance graph of the peer-to-peer inference system for guaranteeing the completeness of this algorithm. Another important contribution is to apply this general distributed reasoning setting to the setting of the Semantic Web through the Somewhere semantic peer-to-peer data management system. The last contribution of this paper is to provide an experimental analysis of the scalability of the peer-to-peer infrastructure that we propose, on large networks of 1000 peers

    A Shared Ontology Approach to Semantic Representation of BIM Data

    Architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC-FM) projects involve a large number of participants that must exchange information and combine their knowledge for successful completion of a project. Currently, most of the AEC-FM domains store their information about a project in text documents or use XML, relational, or object-oriented formats that make information integration difficult. The AEC-FM industry is not taking advantage of the full potential of the Semantic Web for streamlining sharing, connecting, and combining information from different domains. The Semantic Web is designed to solve the information integration problem by creating a web of structured and connected data that can be processed by machines. It allows combining information from different sources with different underlying schemas distributed over the Internet. In the Semantic Web, all data instances and data schema are stored in a graph data store, which makes it easy to merge data from different sources. This paper presents a shared ontology approach to semantic representation of building information. The semantic representation of building information facilitates finding and integrating building information distributed in several knowledge bases. A case study demonstrates the development of a semantic based building design knowledge base

    Piazza: Data Management Infrastructure for Semantic Web Applications

    The Semantic Web envisions a World Wide Web in which data is described with rich semantics and applications can pose complex queries. To this point, researchers have defined new languages for specifying meanings for concepts and developed techniques for reasoning about them, using RDF as the data model. To flourish, the Semantic Web needs to be able to accommodate the huge amounts of existing data and the applications operating on them. To achieve this, we are faced with two problems. First, most of the world\u27s data is available not in RDF but in XML; XML and the applications consuming it rely not only on the domain structure of the data, but also on its document structure. Hence, to provide interoperability between such sources, we must map between both their domain structures and their document structures. Second, data management practitioners often prefer to exchange data through local point-to-point data translations, rather than mapping to common mediated schemas or ontologies. This paper describes the Piazza system, which addresses these challenges. Piazza offers a language for mediating between data sources on the Semantic Web, which maps both the domain structure and document structure. Piazza also enables interoperation of XML data with RDF data that is accompanied by rich OWL ontologies. Mappings in Piazza are provided at a local scale between small sets of nodes, and our query answering algorithm is able to chain sets mappings together to obtain relevant data from across the Piazza network. We also describe an implemented scenario in Piazza and the lessons we learned from it

    Toward Self-Organising Service Communities

    This paper discusses a framework in which catalog service communities are built, linked for interaction, and constantly monitored and adapted over time. A catalog service community (represented as a peer node in a peer-to-peer network) in our system can be viewed as domain specific data integration mediators representing the domain knowledge and the registry information. The query routing among communities is performed to identify a set of data sources that are relevant to answering a given query. The system monitors the interactions between the communities to discover patterns that may lead to restructuring of the network (e.g., irrelevant peers removed, new relationships created, etc.)

    A survey of RDB to RDF translation approaches and tools

To address this concern, many RDB-to-RDF approaches have been proposed over the last years. In this paper, we propose a detailed review of seventeen RDB-to-RDF initiatives, considering end-to-end projects that delivered operational tools. The different tools are classified along three major axes: mapping description language, mapping implementation and data retrieval method. We analyse the motivations, commonalities and differences between existing approaches. The expressiveness of existing mapping languages is not always sufficient to produce semantically rich data and make it usable, interoperable and linkable. We therefore briefly present various strategies investigated in the literature to produce additional knowledge. Finally, we show that R2RML, the W3C recommendation for describing RDB to RDF mappings, may not apply to all needs in the wide scope of RDB to RDF translation applications, leaving space for future extensions

    Pseudo-contractions as Gentle Repairs

    Updating a knowledge base to remove an unwanted consequence is a challenging task. Some of the original sentences must be either deleted or weakened in such a way that the sentence to be removed is no longer entailed by the resulting set. On the other hand, it is desirable that the existing knowledge be preserved as much as possible, minimising the loss of information. Several approaches to this problem can be found in the literature. In particular, when the knowledge is represented by an ontology, two different families of frameworks have been developed in the literature in the past decades with numerous ideas in common but with little interaction between the communities: applications of AGM-like Belief Change and justification-based Ontology Repair. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between pseudo-contraction operations and gentle repairs. Both aim to avoid the complete deletion of sentences when replacing them with weaker versions is enough to prevent the entailment of the unwanted formula. We show the correspondence between concepts on both sides and investigate under which conditions they are equivalent. Furthermore, we propose a unified notation for the two approaches, which might contribute to the integration of the two areas

    Creating NoSQL Biological Databases with Ontologies for Query Relaxation

    AbstractThe complexity of building biological databases is well-known and ontologies play an extremely important role in biological databases. However, much of the emphasis on the role of ontologies in biological databases has been on the construction of databases. In this paper, we explore a somewhat overlooked aspect regarding ontologies in biological databases, namely, how ontologies can be used to assist better database retrieval. In particular, we show how ontologies can be used to revise user submitted queries for query relaxation. In addition, since our research is conducted at today's “big data” era, our investigation is centered on NoSQL databases which serve as a kind of “representatives” of big data. This paper contains two major parts: First we describe our methodology of building two NoSQL application databases (MongoDB and AllegroGraph) using GO ontology, and then discuss how to achieve query relaxation through GO ontology. We report our experiments and show sample queries and results. Our research on query relaxation on NoSQL databases is complementary to existing work in big data and in biological databases and deserves further exploration
