Entropy Message Passing
The paper proposes a new message passing algorithm for cycle-free factor
graphs. The proposed "entropy message passing" (EMP) algorithm may be viewed as
sum-product message passing over the entropy semiring, which has previously
appeared in automata theory. The primary use of EMP is to compute the entropy
of a model. However, EMP can also be used to compute expressions that appear in
expectation maximization and in gradient descent algorithms.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Information

Distributed Partitioned Big-Data Optimization via Asynchronous Dual Decomposition
In this paper we consider a novel partitioned framework for distributed
optimization in peer-to-peer networks. In several important applications the
agents of a network have to solve an optimization problem with two key
features: (i) the dimension of the decision variable depends on the network
size, and (ii) cost function and constraints have a sparsity structure related
to the communication graph. For this class of problems a straightforward
application of existing consensus methods would show two inefficiencies: poor
scalability and redundancy of shared information. We propose an asynchronous
distributed algorithm, based on dual decomposition and coordinate methods, to
solve partitioned optimization problems. We show that, by exploiting the
problem structure, the solution can be partitioned among the nodes, so that
each node just stores a local copy of a portion of the decision variable
(rather than a copy of the entire decision vector) and solves a small-scale
local problem
The Hidden Convexity of Spectral Clustering
In recent years, spectral clustering has become a standard method for data
analysis used in a broad range of applications. In this paper we propose a new
class of algorithms for multiway spectral clustering based on optimization of a
certain "contrast function" over the unit sphere. These algorithms, partly
inspired by certain Independent Component Analysis techniques, are simple, easy
to implement and efficient.
Geometrically, the proposed algorithms can be interpreted as hidden basis
recovery by means of function optimization. We give a complete characterization
of the contrast functions admissible for provable basis recovery. We show how
these conditions can be interpreted as a "hidden convexity" of our optimization
problem on the sphere; interestingly, we use efficient convex maximization
rather than the more common convex minimization. We also show encouraging
experimental results on real and simulated data.Comment: 22 page
Probabilistic Clustering Using Maximal Matrix Norm Couplings
In this paper, we present a local information theoretic approach to
explicitly learn probabilistic clustering of a discrete random variable. Our
formulation yields a convex maximization problem for which it is NP-hard to
find the global optimum. In order to algorithmically solve this optimization
problem, we propose two relaxations that are solved via gradient ascent and
alternating maximization. Experiments on the MSR Sentence Completion Challenge,
MovieLens 100K, and Reuters21578 datasets demonstrate that our approach is
competitive with existing techniques and worthy of further investigation.Comment: Presented at 56th Annual Allerton Conference on Communication,

Energy landscape analysis of neuroimaging data
Computational neuroscience models have been used for understanding neural
dynamics in the brain and how they may be altered when physiological or other
conditions change. We review and develop a data-driven approach to neuroimaging
data called the energy landscape analysis. The methods are rooted in
statistical physics theory, in particular the Ising model, also known as the
(pairwise) maximum entropy model and Boltzmann machine. The methods have been
applied to fitting electrophysiological data in neuroscience for a decade, but
their use in neuroimaging data is still in its infancy. We first review the
methods and discuss some algorithms and technical aspects. Then, we apply the
methods to functional magnetic resonance imaging data recorded from healthy
individuals to inspect the relationship between the accuracy of fitting, the
size of the brain system to be analyzed, and the data length.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
