    Degree-Constrained Orientation of Maximum Satisfaction: Graph Classes and Parameterized Complexity

    The problem Max W-Light (Max W-Heavy) for an undirected graph is to assign a direction to each edge so that the number of vertices of outdegree at most W (resp. at least W) is maximized. It is known that these problems are NP-hard even for fixed W. For example, Max 0-Light is equivalent to the problem of finding a maximum independent set. In this paper, we show that for any fixed constant W, Max W-Heavy can be solved in linear time for hereditary graph classes for which treewidth is bounded by a function of degeneracy. We show that such graph classes include chordal graphs, circular-arc graphs, d-trapezoid graphs, chordal bipartite graphs, and graphs of bounded clique-width. To have a polynomial-time algorithm for Max W-Light, we need an additional condition of a polynomial upper bound on the number of potential maximal cliques to apply the metatheorem by Fomin, Todinca, and Villanger [SIAM J. Comput., 44(1):57-87, 2015]. The aforementioned graph classes, except bounded clique-width graphs, satisfy such a condition. For graphs of bounded clique-width, we present a dynamic programming approach not using the metatheorem to show that it is actually polynomial-time solvable for this graph class too. We also study the parameterized complexity of the problems and show some tractability and intractability results

    The Minimum Maximum Outdegree Problem (MMO) is to assign a direction to every edge in an input undirected, edge-weighted graph so that the maximum weighted outdegree taken over all vertices becomes as small as possible. In this paper, we introduce a new variant of MMO called the p-Split Minimum Maximum Outdegree Problem (p-Split-MMO) in which one is allowed to perform a sequence of p split operations on the vertices before orienting the edges, for some specified non-negative integer p, and study its computational complexity

    Parameterized Orientable Deletion

    A graph is d-orientable if its edges can be oriented so that the maximum in-degree of the resulting digraph is at most d. d-orientability is a well-studied concept with close connections to fundamental graph-theoretic notions and applications as a load balancing problem. In this paper we consider the d-Orientable Deletion problem: given a graph G=(V,E), delete the minimum number of vertices to make G d-orientable. We contribute a number of results that improve the state of the art on this problem. Specifically: - We show that the problem is W[2]-hard and log n-inapproximable with respect to k, the number of deleted vertices. This closes the gap in the problem\u27s approximability. - We completely characterize the parameterized complexity of the problem on chordal graphs: it is FPT parameterized by d+k, but W-hard for each of the parameters d,k separately. - We show that, under the SETH, for all d,epsilon, the problem does not admit a (d+2-epsilon)^{tw}, algorithm where tw is the graph\u27s treewidth, resolving as a special case an open problem on the complexity of PseudoForest Deletion. - We show that the problem is W-hard parameterized by the input graph\u27s clique-width. Complementing this, we provide an algorithm running in time d^{O(d * cw)}, showing that the problem is FPT by d+cw, and improving the previously best know algorithm for this case

    Faster Subgraph Counting in Sparse Graphs

    A fundamental graph problem asks to compute the number of induced copies of a k-node pattern graph H in an n-node graph G. The fastest algorithm to date is still the 35-years-old algorithm by Nesetril and Poljak [Nesetril and Poljak, 1985], with running time f(k) * O(n^{omega floor[k/3] + 2}) where omega <=2.373 is the matrix multiplication exponent. In this work we show that, if one takes into account the degeneracy d of G, then the picture becomes substantially richer and leads to faster algorithms when G is sufficiently sparse. More precisely, after introducing a novel notion of graph width, the DAG-treewidth, we prove what follows. If H has DAG-treewidth tau(H) and G has degeneracy d, then the induced copies of H in G can be counted in time f(d,k) * O~(n^{tau(H)}); and, under the Exponential Time Hypothesis, no algorithm can solve the problem in time f(d,k) * n^{o(tau(H)/ln tau(H))} for all H. This result characterises the complexity of counting subgraphs in a d-degenerate graph. Developing bounds on tau(H), then, we obtain natural generalisations of classic results and faster algorithms for sparse graphs. For example, when d=O(poly log(n)) we can count the induced copies of any H in time f(k) * O~(n^{floor[k/4] + 2}), beating the Nesetril-Poljak algorithm by essentially a cubic factor in n

    Parameterized Approximation Schemes using Graph Widths

    Combining the techniques of approximation algorithms and parameterized complexity has long been considered a promising research area, but relatively few results are currently known. In this paper we study the parameterized approximability of a number of problems which are known to be hard to solve exactly when parameterized by treewidth or clique-width. Our main contribution is to present a natural randomized rounding technique that extends well-known ideas and can be used for both of these widths. Applying this very generic technique we obtain approximation schemes for a number of problems, evading both polynomial-time inapproximability and parameterized intractability bounds

    Truthful Allocation in Graphs and Hypergraphs

    We study truthful mechanisms for allocation problems in graphs, both for the minimization (i.e., scheduling) and maximization (i.e., auctions) setting. The minimization problem is a special case of the well-studied unrelated machines scheduling problem, in which every given task can be executed only by two pre-specified machines in the case of graphs or a given subset of machines in the case of hypergraphs. This corresponds to a multigraph whose nodes are the machines and its hyperedges are the tasks. This class of problems belongs to multidimensional mechanism design, for which there are no known general mechanisms other than the VCG and its generalization to affine minimizers. We propose a new class of mechanisms that are truthful and have significantly better performance than affine minimizers in many settings. Specifically, we provide upper and lower bounds for truthful mechanisms for general multigraphs, as well as special classes of graphs such as stars, trees, planar graphs, k-degenerate graphs, and graphs of a given treewidth. We also consider the objective of minimizing or maximizing the L^p-norm of the values of the players, a generalization of the makespan minimization that corresponds to p = ?, and extend the results to any p > 0
