    Foi escolhido pelo autor deste trabalho participar num estágio de final de curso de forma a completar o seu Mestrado em Engenharia Informática na Universidade de Aveiro. Este relatório de estágio tem como objetivo explicar o trabalho desenvolvido na vertente tecnológica na empresa Rangel Logistics Solutions. O autor integrou a DSI (Direção de Serviços e Informática) e a equipa que desenvolve o novo Web-Portal da Rangel. Neste relatório pretende-se ainda apresentar as principais contribuições do autor para o Web-Portal. O objetivo principal associado à realização deste estágio foi aprofundar os conhecimentos na vertente Web da informática e ganhar experiência de trabalho num ambiente empresarial. As tecnologias e metodologias usadas neste estágio foram uma mistura de tecnologias e metodologias já conhecidas com outras novas, quer ao nível frontend quer ao nível backend. Globalmente avaliamos este estágio como uma experiência muito positiva, permitindo a melhoria dos conhecimentos nas áreas pretendidas e ficando com melhor conhecimento de como funcionam as dinâmicas de trabalho de uma equipa e de uma empresa na área da informática.The author of this work chose to participate in an end-of-course internship in order to complete his Masters in Computer Engineering at the University of Aveiro. This internship report aims to explain the work developed in the technological area at the company Rangel Logistics Solutions. The author was part of the DSI (Services and IT Department) and the team that develops the new Rangel Web-Portal. This report also intends to present what the main contributions of the author to the Web-Portal. The main objective associated with this internship was to deepen the knowledge in the Web aspect of computing and gain work experience in a business environment. The technologies and methodologies used in this internship were a mixture of technologies and methodologies already known with new ones, both at the frontend and backend level. Overall, we evaluate this internship as a very positive experience, allowing for the improvement of knowledge in the desired areas and getting a better understanding of how the workflow of a team and a company in the IT area works.Mestrado em Engenharia Informátic

    Coastal management and adaptation: an integrated data-driven approach

    Coastal regions are some of the most exposed to environmental hazards, yet the coast is the preferred settlement site for a high percentage of the global population, and most major global cities are located on or near the coast. This research adopts a predominantly anthropocentric approach to the analysis of coastal risk and resilience. This centres on the pervasive hazards of coastal flooding and erosion. Coastal management decision-making practices are shown to be reliant on access to current and accurate information. However, constraints have been imposed on information flows between scientists, policy makers and practitioners, due to a lack of awareness and utilisation of available data sources. This research seeks to tackle this issue in evaluating how innovations in the use of data and analytics can be applied to further the application of science within decision-making processes related to coastal risk adaptation. In achieving this aim a range of research methodologies have been employed and the progression of topics covered mark a shift from themes of risk to resilience. The work focuses on a case study region of East Anglia, UK, benefiting from the input of a partner organisation, responsible for the region’s coasts: Coastal Partnership East. An initial review revealed how data can be utilised effectively within coastal decision-making practices, highlighting scope for application of advanced Big Data techniques to the analysis of coastal datasets. The process of risk evaluation has been examined in detail, and the range of possibilities afforded by open source coastal datasets were revealed. Subsequently, open source coastal terrain and bathymetric, point cloud datasets were identified for 14 sites within the case study area. These were then utilised within a practical application of a geomorphological change detection (GCD) method. This revealed how analysis of high spatial and temporal resolution point cloud data can accurately reveal and quantify physical coastal impacts. Additionally, the research reveals how data innovations can facilitate adaptation through insurance; more specifically how the use of empirical evidence in pricing of coastal flood insurance can result in both communication and distribution of risk. The various strands of knowledge generated throughout this study reveal how an extensive range of data types, sources, and advanced forms of analysis, can together allow coastal resilience assessments to be founded on empirical evidence. This research serves to demonstrate how the application of advanced data-driven analytical processes can reduce levels of uncertainty and subjectivity inherent within current coastal environmental management practices. The programs and activities carried out by ESRIN are then analyzed, with particular attention to the Earth Observation and VEGA programs. We then moved on to assessing the economic and strategic impact of ESRIN for Italy. In particular, an estimate was made of the direct and indirect economic impact and of the scientific value developed by ESRIN on the Italian territory

    Village-Scale Practices and Water Sources in Indigenous Mexico after the Neoliberalizing of Social Property

    To establish whether social property villages ("nĂşcleos agrarios") in indigenous, well-watered parts of Mexico are maintaining the same degree of village-scale control of water sources that they practiced before the neoliberal land tenure reforms of the 1990s, three sources of data were investigated in two regions: the Huasteca of San Luis PotosĂ­ state (home to indigenous Teenek, Nahua, and Pame residents, as well as non-indigenous people), and the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca state (home to indigenous Zapotec and Chinantec residents, and a smaller number of non-indigenous people). The three data sources were: 1. Archival documents at state offices of the National Agrarian Registry (Registro Agrario Nacional, or RAN); 2. Participatory research mapping (PRM) data acquired in fifteen villages, with the author as sole academic researcher in one of these (the Zapotec nĂşcleo of Talea de Castro); 3. GIS (geodata) analysis of water sources (springs) and land tenure zones in both regions, encompassing about 460 social property nĂşcleos as well as private and public lands. Neither spatially-defined ownership of land where water resources are located, nor conceptual rights and obligations (enacted through local practices), were found to have undergone extraordinary changes in the two decades since the neoliberal reforms were initiated. However, these reforms were found to have played a key role in the gradual shift in legal and practical emphasis away from a fusion of village and individual attachments to water sources (regardless of legal or locally-defined land tenure), and toward a simplified, spatially unambiguous distinction between village and individual land units, linked to a nationwide program of water rights concessions which favor the individual and the state over the village. This shift in emphasis is being successfully resisted in many villages, particularly in indigenous ones. This resistance often takes the form of creative engagement with state initiatives such as the 1993-2006 land surveying and certification program PROCEDE and its successor FANAR. Nevertheless, village orientation toward water partly depends on de facto, orally transmitted local practices which will vanish in some villages during the next several decades
