Wavelet based Shape Descriptors using Morphology for Texture Classification
The present paper is an extension of our previous paper [1]. In this paper shape descriptors are derived on binary cross diagonal texture matrix (BCDTM) after formation of morphological gradient on the wavelet domain. Morphological gradient is obtained from the difference of dilated and eroded gray level texture. A close relationship can be obtained with contour and texture pattern by evaluating morphological edge information. Morphological operations are simple and they provide topology of the texture, that is the reason the proposed morphological gradient provides abundance of texture and shape information. The proposed Wavelet based morphological gradient binary cross diagonal shape descriptors texture matrix (WMG-BCDSDTM) using wavelets is experimented on wide range of textures for classification purpose. A novel fusion approach in the extraction of kernel descriptor with improved effectiveness and efficiency
Image representation using feature descriptors is crucial. A number of histogram-based descriptors are widely used for this purpose. However, histogram-based descriptors have certain limitations and kernel descriptors (KDES) are proven to overcome them. Moreover, the combination of more than one KDES performs better than an individual KDES. Conventionally, KDES fusion is performed by concatenating them after the gradient, colour and shape descriptors have been extracted. This approach has limitations in regard to the efficiency as well as the effectiveness. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to fuse different image features before the descriptor extraction, resulting in a compact descriptor which is efficient and effective. In addition, we have investigated the effect on the proposed descriptor when texture-based features are fused along with the conventionally used features. Our proposed descriptor is examined on two publicly available image databases and shown to provide outstanding performances
On the Design and Analysis of Multiple View Descriptors
We propose an extension of popular descriptors based on gradient orientation
histograms (HOG, computed in a single image) to multiple views. It hinges on
interpreting HOG as a conditional density in the space of sampled images, where
the effects of nuisance factors such as viewpoint and illumination are
marginalized. However, such marginalization is performed with respect to a very
coarse approximation of the underlying distribution. Our extension leverages on
the fact that multiple views of the same scene allow separating intrinsic from
nuisance variability, and thus afford better marginalization of the latter. The
result is a descriptor that has the same complexity of single-view HOG, and can
be compared in the same manner, but exploits multiple views to better trade off
insensitivity to nuisance variability with specificity to intrinsic
variability. We also introduce a novel multi-view wide-baseline matching
dataset, consisting of a mixture of real and synthetic objects with ground
truthed camera motion and dense three-dimensional geometry
Object Edge Contour Localisation Based on HexBinary Feature Matching
This paper addresses the issue of localising object
edge contours in cluttered backgrounds to support robotics
tasks such as grasping and manipulation and also to improve
the potential perceptual capabilities of robot vision systems. Our
approach is based on coarse-to-fine matching of a new recursively
constructed hierarchical, dense, edge-localised descriptor,
the HexBinary, based on the HexHog descriptor structure first
proposed in [1]. Since Binary String image descriptors [2]–
[5] require much lower computational resources, but provide
similar or even better matching performance than Histogram
of Orientated Gradient (HoG) descriptors, we have replaced
the HoG base descriptor fields used in HexHog with Binary
Strings generated from first and second order polar derivative
approximations. The ALOI [6] dataset is used to evaluate
the HexBinary descriptors which we demonstrate to achieve
a superior performance to that of HexHoG [1] for pose
refinement. The validation of our object contour localisation
system shows promising results with correctly labelling ~86% of edgel positions and mis-labelling ~3%
