    Global visualization and quantification of compressible vortex loops

    The physics of compressible vortex loops generated due to the rolling up of the shear layer upon the diffraction of a shock wave from a shock tube is far from being understood, especially when shock-vortex interactions are involved. This is mainly due to the lack of global quantitative data available which characterizes the flow. The present study involves the usage of the PIV technique to characterize the velocity and vorticity of compressible vortex loops formed at incident shock Mach numbers ofM=1.54 and1.66. Another perk of the PIV technique over purely qualitative methods, which has been demonstrated in the current study, is that at the same time the results also provide a clear image of the various flow features. Techniques such as schlieren and shadowgraph rely on density gradients present in the flow and fail to capture regions of the flow influenced by the primary flow structure which would have relatively lower pressure and density. Various vortex loops, namely, square, elliptic and circular, were generated using different shape adaptors fitted to the end of the shock tube. The formation of a coaxial vortex loop with opposite circulation along with the generation of a third stronger vortex loop ahead of the primary with same circulation direction are of the interesting findings of the current study

    Dynamic airfoil stall investigations

    Experimental and computational investigations of the dynamic stall phenomenon continue to attract the attention of various research groups in the major aeronautical research laboratories. There are two reasons for this continued research interest. First, the occurrence of dynamic stall on the retreating blade of helicopters imposes a severe performance limitation and thus suggests to search for ways to delay the onset of dynamic stall. Second, the lift enhancement prior to dynamic stall presents an opportunity to achieve enhanced maneuverability of fighter aircraft. A description of the major parameters affecting dynamic stall and lift and an evaluation of research efforts prior to 1988 has been given by Carr. In this paper the authors' recent progress in the development of experimental and computational methods to analyze the dynamic stall phenomena occurring on NACA 0112 airfoils is reviewed. First, the major experimental and computational approaches and results are summarized. This is followed by an assessment of our results and an outlook toward the future

    Interactions of shock tube exhaust flows with laminar and turbulent flames

    The interactions of flow features emitting from open-ended shock tubes with free-standing propane flames have been investigated using high-speed schlieren imaging and high-frequency pressure measurements, with additional data from validated numerical modeling. Both compressed air-driven interactions with non-pre-mixed laminar diffusion flames (small-scale) and explosively-driven interactions with turbulent non-pre-mixed turbulent flames (large-scale) were tested for various flame locations and shock tube stagnation pressures (and therefore Mach numbers). In the small-scale tests it was observed that the flames were not significantly influenced by the passage of either the initial shock if placed close to the tube exit, or the weaker pressure waves downstream if the flame was placed further away. Four types of interaction were classified, three of which led to permanent extinguishment of the flames. The most effective mechanism of extinguishment for a flame in-line with the exhaust was the axial exhaust jet of expanding air, which served to push the flame off the fuel source either at close range (Type I) or more slowly at a distance (Type II), after which rapid cessation of combustion occurred. With the flame positioned to one side of the path of the jet, strong loop vortices achieved a similar overall outcome of extinguishment, albeit with very different flame behavior in reaction to the strong turbulence and vorticity induced by the passing flow (Type III). In all cases bar one, the disruption to the fire triangle caused by these flow effects was sufficient to extinguish – rapidly and permanently – the flame. However, at a sufficient lateral offset of the flame from the shock tube exit, the strength of rotating flow being entrained into the diffusing vortex ring was not sufficient to remove and disperse the heat from the extinguished flame (Type IV), such that re-ignition could occur. By contrast, in the large-scale tests with a significantly different shock pressure profile and a flame approximately 1 order of magnitude greater, extinguishment in all cases for all shock strengths and locations was achieved by the shock itself (accelerating combustion) and the following “blast wind” impulsively moving the flame off the fuel source, with the vortices having negligible effect at the given testing locations (Type V)

    Experimental studies on shock wave interactions with flexible surfaces and development of flow diagnostic tools

    Nowadays, light-weight composite materials have increasingly used for high-speed flight vehicles to improve their performance and efficiency. At supersonic speed, sonic fatigue, panel flutter, severe instabilities, and even catastrophic structural failure would occur due to the shock wave impingement on several flexible components of a given structural system either internally or externally. Therefore, investigation on shock wave interaction with flexible surfaces is crucial for the safety and performance of high-speed flight vehicles. This work aims to investigate the mechanism of shock wave interaction with flexible surfaces with and without the presence of the boundary layer. The first part involves the shock wave generated by supersonic starting jets interaction with flexible surfaces and the other one focuses on shock wave and boundary layer interaction (SBLI) over flexible surfaces. A novel miniature and cost-effective shock tube driven by detonation transmission tubing was designed and manufactured to simulate the supersonic starting jet and investigate the interaction of a supersonic starting jet with flexible surfaces. To investigate the characterization of this novel type shock tube, the pressure-time measurement in the driven section and the time-resolved shadowgraph were performed. The result shows that the flow structure from the open end of the shock tube driven by detonation transmission tubing agrees with that of conventional compressed-gas driven shock tubes. Moreover, this novel type of shock tube has good repeatability of less than 3% with a Mach number range of 1.29-1.58 when the weight of the NONEL explosive mixture varies from 3.6mg to 12.6mg. An unsteady background oriented schlieren (BOS) measurement system and a sprayable Polymer-Ceramic unsteady pressure sensitive paint (PC-PSP) system were developed. The preliminary BOS result in a supersonic wind tunnel shows that the sensitivity of the BOS system is good enough to visualize weak density variations caused by expansion waves, boundary layer, and weak oblique shocks. Additionally, compared with the commercial PC-PSP from Innovative Scientific Solutions Incorporated (ISSI), the in-house developed unsteady PSP system has higher pressure sensitivity, lower temperature sensitivity, and photo-degradation rate. To identify the shock movement, distortion and unsteadiness during the processes of the supersonic starting jet impingement and shock wave boundary layer interaction (SBLI) over flexible surfaces, an image processing scheme involving background subtraction in the frequency domain, filtering, resampling, edge detection, adaptive threshold, contour detection, feature extraction, and fitting was proposed and applied to process shadowgraph and schlieren sequences automatically. A large shadowgraph data set characterized by low signal to noise ratio (SNR) and small spatial resolution (312×260-pixel), was used to validate the proposed scheme. The result proves that the aforementioned image processing scheme can detect, track, localize, and fit shock waves in a subpixel accuracy. The mechanism of the interaction between the initial shock wave from a supersonic starting jet and flexible surfaces was investigated based on a square shock tube driven by detonation transmitting tube. Compared with that of the solid plate case, flexible surfaces can delay the shock reflection process because of the flexible panel deformation generated by the pressure difference between the top and the bottom. The delay time is around 8µs in the case of 0.1mm thick flexible surface, whereas it declines to around 4µs in the case of 0.3mm thick flexible surface because of the lower flexibility and deformation magnitude. However, interestingly, the propagation velocity of the reflected shock wave is basically the same for the solid plate and flexible panels, which means the flexible surface doesn’t reduce the strength of the reflection wave, although it delays its propagation. Also, there is not an apparent difference in the velocity of the reflected shock wave in the case of different incident shock Mach numbers when Ms varying from 1.22 to 1.54. These experimental results from this study are useful for validating numerical codes that are used for understanding fluid-structure interaction processes

    Control of unsteady separated flow associated with the dynamic stall of airfoils

    A unique active flow-control device is proposed for the control of unsteady separated flow associated with the dynamic stall of airfoils. The device is an adaptive-geometry leading-edge which will allow controlled, dynamic modification of the leading-edge profile of an airfoil while the airfoil is executing an angle-of-attack pitch-up maneuver. A carbon-fiber composite skin has been bench tested, and a wind tunnel model is under construction. A baseline parameter study of compressible dynamic stall was performed for flow over an NACA 0012 airfoil. Parameters included Mach number, pitch rate, pitch history, and boundary layer tripping. Dynamic stall data were recorded via point-diffraction interferometry and the interferograms were analyzed with in-house developed image processing software. A new high-speed phase-locked photographic image recording system was developed for real-time documentation of dynamic stall

    Cavitation refers to the formation of vapor cavities in a liquid when the local pressure becomes lower than the saturation pressure. In many hydraulic applications, cavitation is considered as a non-desirable phenomenon, as far as it may cause performance degradation, vibration problems, enhance broad-band noise-emission, and eventually trigger erosion. In this Special Issue, recent findings about cavitation instabilities are reported. More precisely, the dynamics of cavitation sheets are explored at very low Reynolds numbers in laminar flows, and in microscale applications. Both experimental and numerical approach are used. For the latter, original methods are assessed, such as smooth particles hydrodynamics or detached eddy simulations coupled to a compressible approach
