GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS USED IN BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

    Get PDF
Communities are constantly in competition with one another to attract businesses. New and better ways to market a community constantly go through experimentation. One tool that has come to the forefront is the use of a geographic information system (GIS). Lately, more and more communities are adopting this tool for land use planning and for economic development planning. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are used for inputting, storing, managing, analyzing and mapping spatial data. This article consider the role of each function that a GIS can play in economics: map economic data with a spatial component; generate additional spatial data as inputs to statistical analysis; calculate distances between features of interest;define neighborhoods around objects;introducing new data.Geographical Information Systems map, asset management, suitability analysis

Geographical information systems technologies for spatial visualization of statistical data

This paper proposes an original solution to present statistical data using the facilities provided by the Geographical Information Systems, to improve the means of statistical data figure and distribution inside the territorial profile. The proposed solution allows to represent more statistical data sets, on the same map, using two different methods of data representation: using a color ramp to represent the territorial distribution of an aggregate indicator and a set of charts overlapped to represent the proportions of the variables that form the indicator.Geographical Information Systems, Spatial Visualization, ArcObjects, Cartograms

Using geographical information systems for management of back-pain data

This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2002 MCB UP LtdIn the medical world, statistical visualisation has largely been confined to the realm of relatively simple geographical applications. This remains the case, even though hospitals have been collecting spatial data relating to patients. In particular, hospitals have a wealth of back pain information, which includes pain drawings, usually detailing the spatial distribution and type of pain suffered by back-pain patients. Proposes several technological solutions, which permit data within back-pain datasets to be digitally linked to the pain drawings in order to provide methods of computer-based data management and analysis. In particular, proposes the use of geographical information systems (GIS), up till now a tool used mainly in the geographic and cartographic domains, to provide novel and powerful ways of visualising and managing back-pain data. A comparative evaluation of the proposed solutions shows that, although adding complexity and cost, the GIS-based solution is the one most appropriate for visualisation and analysis of back-pain datasets

Georeferencing socio-demographic information: postcodes, addresses, land parcels and geographical information systems

The collection and dissemination of population related data requires that all database records are georeferenced. First we consider household residential populations in Great Britain before noting some differences in Northern Ireland and for institutional populations. We then outline the situation for mobility, both migration and commuting and in relation to the latter, place of work. Ultimately, all these circumstances are geographically inter-related so should be considered as part of a whole statistical system

Information and Communication Technologies for Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry in Jammu and Kashmir

Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is growing in all spheres of activity. Veterinary Sciences andAnimal Husbandry should therefore be no exception. Efforts are needed to incorporate ICT in all endeavours related to livestock development in Jammu and Kashmir. All organizations and departments concerned with Veterinary Sciences andAnimal Husbandry need to realize the potential of ICT for the speedy and timely dissemination of information modules to the livestock rearers. The awareness among livestock rearers about the information and availability of ICT services is the first step to be taken to increase livestock rearers' participation in ICT initiatives.Access to information and communication is essential to the stakeholders at alllevels in the process of development. Various information and communication technology tools in knowledge and information dissemination needed for livestock rearers and possible IT application tools in realizing their needs in Jammu and Kashmir are discussed

THE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR THE INFORMATION SOCIETY (i-Society)

The globalization process needs exact information flows that should be collected in due time. The Information Society ensures the communication between people with different expertise from various geographical areas that have similar interests. The increase of the companies’ activities leads implicitly to the increase of the volume and the complexities of databases, as well as the continuous modernization of the integrated information systems in order to collect the information in due time, that is requested by the decision takers and the frequent use of DSS. The paper presents the DSS structure, the main facilities offered by the associated software products, an evolution of the databases technologies, as well as a list of the program products used to process the statistical data and data mining in order to obtain the main sources of information that is necessary to take decisions.Information Society (i-Society); Data Base; Information Systems; Decision Support Systems (DSS); Statistical Package, Portal technology

On the other hand, there is a way to represent statistical data using 3D cartograms. Thus, in GIS, the users can distinguish the intensity of the studied economic or social phenomenon because of the heights of the administrative units will be different.Geographical Information Systems, Spatial Visualization, ArcObjects, 2D and 3D Cartograms

A flexible modeling framework to estimate interregional trade patterns and input-output accounts

    Get PDF
This study implements and tests a mathematical programming model to estimate interregional, interindustry transaction flows in a national system of economic regions based on an interregional accounting framework and initial information of interregional shipments. A national input-output (IO) table, regional data on gross output, value-added, exports, imports and final demand at sector level are used as inputs to generate an interregional IO account that reconciles regional economic statistics and interregional transaction data. The model is tested using data from a multi-regional global input-output database and shows remarkable capacity to discover true interregional trade patterns from highly distorted initial estimates.Scientific Research&Science Parks,Information Technology,Environmental Economics&Policies,Statistical&Mathematical Sciences,ICT Policy and Strategies,Statistical&Mathematical Sciences,Information Technology,Scientific Research&Science Parks,Science Education,Geographical Information Systems
