    Variable Neighborhood Search for the Order Batching and Sequencing Problem with Multiple Pickers

    Order picking deals with the retrieval of articles from their storage locations in order to satisfy customer requests. The transformation and consolidation of customer orders into picking orders (batches) is pivotal for the performance of order picking systems. Typically, customer orders have to be completed by certain due dates in order to avoid delays in production or in the shipment to customers. The composition of the batches, their processing times, their assignment to order pickers and the sequence according to which they are scheduled determine whether and the extent to which the due dates are missed. This article shows how Variable Neighborhood Descent and Variable Neighborhood Search can be applied in order to minimize the total tardiness of a given set of customer orders. In a series of extensive numerical experiments, the performance of the two approaches is analyzed for different problem classes. It is shown that the proposed methods provide solutions which may allow order picking systems to operate more efficiently

    Data-driven warehouse optimization

    Batching orders and routing order pickers is a commonly studied problem in many picker-to-parts warehouses. The impact of individual differences in picking skills on performance has received little attention. In this paper, we show that taking into account differences in the skills of individual pickers when assigning work has a substantial effect on total batch execution time and picker productivity. We demonstrate this for the case of a Finnish retailer. First, using time-stamped picking data, multilevel modeling is used to forecast batch execution times for individual pickers by modeling individual skills of pickers. Next, these forecasts are used to minimize total batch execution time, by assigning the right picker to the right order batch. We formulate the problem as a joint order batching and generalized assignment model, and solve it with an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search algorithm. For the sample company, we are able to improve state-of-the-art batching and routing methods by almost 10% taking skill differences among pickers into account and minimizing the sum of total order processing time. Compared to assigning order batches to pickers only based on individual picker productivity, savings of 6% in total time are achieved

    Supply chain management: An opportunity for metaheuristics

    In today’s highly competitive and global marketplace the pressure on organizations to find new ways to create and deliver value to customers grows ever stronger. In the last two decades, logistics and supply chain has moved to the center stage. There has been a growing recognition that it is through an effective management of the logistics function and the supply chain that the goal of cost reduction and service enhancement can be achieved. The key to success in Supply Chain Management (SCM) require heavy emphasis on integration of activities, cooperation, coordination and information sharing throughout the entire supply chain, from suppliers to customers. To be able to respond to the challenge of integration there is the need of sophisticated decision support systems based on powerful mathematical models and solution techniques, together with the advances in information and communication technologies. The industry and the academia have become increasingly interested in SCM to be able to respond to the problems and issues posed by the changes in the logistics and supply chain. We present a brief discussion on the important issues in SCM. We then argue that metaheuristics can play an important role in solving complex supply chain related problems derived by the importance of designing and managing the entire supply chain as a single entity. We will focus specially on the Iterated Local Search, Tabu Search and Scatter Search as the ones, but not limited to, with great potential to be used on solving the SCM related problems.     Integrated zone picking and vehicle routing operations with restricted intermediate storage

    The competitiveness of a retailer is highly dependent on an efficient distribution system. This is especially true for the supply of stores from distribution centers. Stores ask for high flexibility when it comes to their supply. This means that fast order processing is essential. Order processing affects different subsystems at the distribution center: Orders are picked in multiple picking zones, transferred to intermediate storage, and delivered via dedicated tours. These processing steps are highly interdependent. The schedule for picking needs to be synchronized with the routing decisions to ensure availability of the delivery orders at the DC’s loading docks when their associated tours are scheduled. Concurrently, intermediate storage represents a bottleneck as capacities for order storage are limited. The simultaneous planning of picking and routing operations with restricted intermediate storage is therefore relevant for retail practice but has not so far been considered within an integrated planning approach. Our work addresses this task and discusses an integrated zone picking and vehicle routing problem with restricted intermediate storage. We present a comprehensive model formulation and introduce a general variable neighborhood search for simultaneous consideration of the given planning stages. We also present two alternative sequential approaches that are motivated by the prevailing planning situation in industry. Numerical experiments that we have conducted show the need for an integrated planning approach to obtain practicable results. Further, we identify the impact of the main problem characteristics on the overall planning problem and provide valuable insights for the application of this approach in industry

    Solving the Order Batching and Sequencing Problem using Deep Reinforcement Learning

    In e-commerce markets, on time delivery is of great importance to customer satisfaction. In this paper, we present a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach for deciding how and when orders should be batched and picked in a warehouse to minimize the number of tardy orders. In particular, the technique facilitates making decisions on whether an order should be picked individually (pick-by-order) or picked in a batch with other orders (pick-by-batch), and if so with which other orders. We approach the problem by formulating it as a semi-Markov decision process and develop a vector-based state representation that includes the characteristics of the warehouse system. This allows us to create a deep reinforcement learning solution that learns a strategy by interacting with the environment and solve the problem with a proximal policy optimization algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed DRL approach by comparing it with several batching and sequencing heuristics in different problem settings. The results show that the DRL approach is able to develop a strategy that produces consistent, good solutions and performs better than the proposed heuristics.Comment: Preprin

    Integration of returns and decomposition of customer orders in e-commerce warehouses

    In picker-to-parts warehouses, order picking is a cost- and labor-intensive operation that must be designed efficiently. It comprises the construction of order batches and the associated order picker routes, and the assignment and sequencing of those batches to multiple order pickers. The ever-increasing competitiveness among e-commerce companies has made the joint optimization of this order picking process inevitable. Inspired by the large number of product returns and the many but small-sized customer orders, we address a new integrated order picking process problem. We integrate the restocking of returned products into regular order picking routes and we allow for the decomposition of customer orders so that multiple batches may contain products from the same customer order. We thereby generalize the existing models on order picking processing. We provide Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulations and a tailored adaptive large neighborhood search heuristic that, amongst others, exploits these MIPs. We propose a new set of practically-sized benchmark instances, consisting of up to 5547 to be picked products and 2491 to be restocked products. On those large-scale instances, we show that integrating the restocking of returned products into regular order picker routes results in cost-savings of 10 to 15%. Allowing for the decomposition of the customer orders' products results in cost savings of up to 44% compared to not allowing this. Finally, we show that on average cost-savings of 17.4% can be obtained by using our ALNS instead of heuristics typically used in practice.Comment: Authors' preprin

    Tabu Search Heuristics for the Order Batching Problem in Manual Order Picking Systems

    In manual order picking systems, order pickers walk or ride through a distribution warehouse in order to collect items requested by (internal or external) customers. In order to perform these operations efficiently, it is usually required that customer orders are combined into (more substantial) picking orders of limited size. The Order Batching Problem considered in this paper deals with the question of how a given set of customer orders should be combined such that the total length of all tours necessary to collect all items is minimized. For the solution of this problem the authors suggest two approaches based on the tabu search principle. The first one is a straightforward classic Tabu Search algorithm (TS), the second one is the Attribute-Based Hill Climber (ABHC). In a series of extensive numerical experiments, the newly developed approaches are benchmarked against different solution methods from literature. It is demonstrated that the proposed methods are superior to existing methods and provide solutions which may allow for operating distribution warehouses significantly more efficiently
