    Get PDF
Safeguarding our home appliances has become an issue when dealing with an advancement and growth of an economy. This research focuses on the controlling of home appliances remotely when the user is away from the house. The system is Short Message Service (SMS) based and uses wireless technology to revolutionize the standards of living. It provides ideal solution to certain problems faced by home owners in daily life. Due to its wireless nature, it is more adaptable and cost-effective. The research is divided into two sections; the hardware and the software sections. The hardware section consists of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) modem module, The Control module, the Appliance module, the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) module and the power supply module. The GSM modem receives the message sent by the person who wishes to operate any of the connected appliances, it then forwards it to the microcontroller, and the microcontroller decodes the message, switches on or switches off the appropriate appliance, updates the LCD and sends a feedback to the mobile phone via the GSM modem. Overall, the work employs The ATmega16 microcontroller, relays, a programmer to program the microcontroller, a mobile phones and a GSM modem. The AT commands is used to handle communication between the modem and the ATmega16 microcontroller. Flow code is used for the programming of the microcontroller. The overall work was implemented with a constructed work, tested working and perfectly functional. Keywords: Short Message Service, Global System for Mobile Communications, Remote Control, Electronic Circuit Design

FM and Web Based Solution: A Novel Approach to Monitor and Control Home Appliances using Mobile Phone

The capacity of controlling various electrical and electronics devices in a wireless and remote fashion has provided a great convenience to many people in life. Through a wireless distant control system, people can do remote operation without directly accessing the host of home appliances like fan, lamp, TV, washing machines and others. Pocket switch is one of these types of system which we can use to control home appliances smartly from anywhere. The main objective of this work is to make such a system which controls the home appliances remotely using Web service and FM technology from a mobile phone. This paper discusses two methods of controlling home appliances. The first one is web service based where server will generate a command to the controller computer and the second one is FM network based where server will synthesize the SMS in to speech

Due to the widespread ownership of smartphone devices, the application of mobile technologies to enhance the monitoring and control of smart home facilities has attracted much academic attention. This study indicates that tools already in the possession of the end user can be a significant part of the specific context-aware system in the smart home. The behaviour of the system in the context of existing systems will reflect the intention of the client. This model system offers a diverse architectural concept for Wireless Sensor Actuator Mobile Computing in a Smart Home (WiSAMCinSH) and consists of sensors and actuators in various communication channels, with different capacities, paradigms, costs and degree of communication reliability. This paper focuses on the utilization of end users’ smartphone applications to control home devices, and to enable monitoring of the context-aware environment in the smart home to fulfil the needs of the ageing population. It investigates the application of an iPhone to supervise smart home monitoring and control electrical devices, and through this approach, after initial setup of the mobile application, a user can control devices in the smart home from different locations and over various distances

Reducing Wastage In Electricity Usage Through The Use Of Advancement In GSM Technology

Due to epileptic nature of electricity in developing economy like Nigeria, people have their electrical loads on mistakenly when leaving homes for offices or offices for homes; and this normally resulting in energy wastages and inefficiencies. These wastages are very detrimental to industrial development; therefore, there is need to make use of advancement in technology to reduce wastage in electricity usage. To that effect, this paper proposes a device that can control home appliances via Global System for Mobile Communication network so as to reduce electrical energy wastages and consequently, enhance industrial sectors growth. In addition, the proposed device will inform the user when utility board restores electricity on the user’s mobile line, display on the mobile line of the user the states of all the connected appliances and receive appropriate command from the user, to either switch ON or OFF specified appliance(s). The various results obtained when the proposed device was tested revealed that it worked according to the design specifications

The ONLINE AUTOMATIC SWITCH OF APPLIANCES enhances the traditional way of plugging and unplugging of appliances in certain location where the user can access the appliances online. It is composed of a desktop or laptop computer- that were used by the user in accessing the project, relay switches- which were used to convert small amount of current to trigger a large amount of current, router or modem - which were used to transfer internet signals, Arduino board- which were used to connect the switch to the server and the extension cord with sockets as the primary outlet. This study aimed to a better way to turn on or turn off the appliances. The Prototyping method served as the paradigm of the study. The project yielded from different findings, for the development and completion.  The study revealed that the project is much better compared to the traditional way of plugging and unplugging of appliances. With the proper instruction, guidance and setting up the project, two hundred sixty four respondents were selected to evaluate the project. The overall impression of the respondents as evaluated that result to very satisfactory in terms of acceptability. Keywords: online, automatic switch, switch, appliances, arduin

Smart Home (SH) technology, comprising smart devices in the home context. SH technology has demonstrated new and good contribution to increase safety and reliability, at the same time; it might have its own influence to change our living habit. Use of mobile phones is changing with the development of technology; it can be used for different purposes. With the help of a network, mobile phone can be used to implement the smart home by controlling the devices. The objectives of this paper are to implement a smart home by controlling electronic devices at home remotely and to get an alert on intrusion or movement around the restricted premises. The mobile phone is using the short message service (SMS) service available and the alerts are also received as an SMS mentioning the activity occurring around the premises
