    Context-based Information Fusion: A survey and discussion

    This survey aims to provide a comprehensive status of recent and current research on context-based Information Fusion (IF) systems, tracing back the roots of the original thinking behind the development of the concept of \u201ccontext\u201d. It shows how its fortune in the distributed computing world eventually permeated in the world of IF, discussing the current strategies and techniques, and hinting possible future trends. IF processes can represent context at different levels (structural and physical constraints of the scenario, a priori known operational rules between entities and environment, dynamic relationships modelled to interpret the system output, etc.). In addition to the survey, several novel context exploitation dynamics and architectural aspects peculiar to the fusion domain are presented and discussed

    Dynamic Maps: Representations of Change in Geospatial Modeling and Visualization

    By coining the descriptive phrase ―user-centric geographic cosmology, Goodchild (1998), challenges the geographically oriented to address GIS in the broadest imaginable context: as interlocutor between persons and geo-phenomena. This investigation responds both in a general way, and more specifically, to the representations of change in GIS modeling and visualization leading to dynamic mapping. The investigation, consisting of a report and a series of experiments, explores and demonstrates prototype workarounds that enhance GIS capabilities by drawing upon ideas, techniques, and components from agent-based modeling and visualization software, and suggests shifts at the conceptual, methodological, and technical levels. The workarounds and demonstrations presented here are four-dimensional visualizations, representing changes and behaviors of different types of entities such as living creatures, mobile assets, features, structures, and surfaces, using GIS, agent-based modeling and animation techniques. In a typical case, a creature begins as a point feature in GIS, becomes a mobile and interactive object in agent-based modeling, and is fleshed out to three dimensions in an animated representation. In contrast, a land surface remains much the same in all three stages. The experiments address change in location, orientation, shape, visual attributes, viewpoint, scale, and speed in applications representing predator-prey, search and destroy, sense and locate and urban sprawl. During the experiments, particular attention is paid to factors of modeling and visualization involved in engaging human sensing and cognitive abilities

    A Bayesian Abduction Model For Sensemaking

    This research develops a Bayesian Abduction Model for Sensemaking Support (BAMSS) for information fusion in sensemaking tasks. Two methods are investigated. The first is the classical Bayesian information fusion with belief updating (using Bayesian clustering algorithm) and abductive inference. The second method uses a Genetic Algorithm (BAMSS-GA) to search for the k-best most probable explanation (MPE) in the network. Using various data from recent Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, experimental simulations were conducted to compare the methods using posterior probability values which can be used to give insightful information for prospective sensemaking. The inference results demonstrate the utility of BAMSS as a computational model for sensemaking. The major results obtained are: (1) The inference results from BAMSS-GA gave average posterior probabilities that were 103 better than those produced by BAMSS; (2) BAMSS-GA gave more consistent posterior probabilities as measured by variances; and (3) BAMSS was able to give an MPE while BAMSS-GA was able to identify the optimal values for kMPEs. In the experiments, out of 20 MPEs generated by BAMSS, BAMSS-GA was able to identify 7 plausible network solutions resulting in less amount of information needed for sensemaking and reducing the inference search space by 7/20 (35%). The results reveal that GA can be used successfully in Bayesian information fusion as a search technique to identify those significant posterior probabilities useful for sensemaking. BAMSS-GA was also more robust in overcoming the problem of bounded search that is a constraint to Bayesian clustering and inference state space in BAMSS

    UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF INCIDENTS AND INCIDENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS ON FREEWAY MOBILITY AND SAFETY

    Despite significant technological achievements over past decades, and institutional support for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), it is not possible to prevent all traffic incidents. Numerous incidents occur every day along U.S. freeways and traffic incident management (TIM) programs have been proposed and implemented to mitigate their impact. This dissertation proposes various tools to aid in the evaluation of proposed TIM programs, contributing, thus, to the general study area of freeway incident management. In addition, moving violations specific to concurrent flow lane operations are conceived as a type of transient incident. Their impact on mobility and safety is considered. Techniques to address four key areas are proposed. First, a methodology that considers the dynamics of incident impact given a primary incident's properties and prevailing traffic conditions for identifying secondary incidents from a database is proposed. This method is computationally efficient and overcomes deficiencies of other existing techniques, with utility in any context in which the study of secondary incidents is warranted. A three-stage time-saving process is developed for conducting TIM program benefit evaluations. The process aids in sampling a relatively small set of good quality incident scenarios that can represent historical incident data and overcomes the computational burden encountered when evaluating TIM program's benefit by simulation. Modeling techniques are proposed for simulating violations associated with the operation of concurrent flow lanes. Results from a case study show significant impact to mobility that grows nonlinearly with increasing violation rate. Such illegal traffic maneuvers contribute to increased speed variation and congestion, ultimately affecting safety. Finally, diversion strategies that exploit existing capacity of managed lanes for the purpose of reducing the impact of an incident in the general purpose lanes are evaluated. Simulation modeling methodologies were developed for modeling freeway incidents and studied diversion strategy implementations. Experimental findings indicate benefits of diversion that are contrary to qualitatively developed recommendations in the literature
