Approach to the choice of modernization directions for the system of geodynamic monitoring in cases of using components intensity uncertainty
The problem of the optimum choice of the modernization directions for geodynamic monitoring systems, which is solved in the conditions of changing the parameters of natural-technical systems (NTS) is considered in the work. The solution of the task is creating a list of the components modernization directions and validate ranking the most effective of them. As criterion of modernization the value of decrease in resource intensity of subsystem application is usin
A cognitive approach to improve software engineering processes
Cognitive Informatics is a new research area that combines concepts from cognitive sciences and informatics. Particularly, classification according to cognitive styles or learning styles is a common practise in educational and business areas in order to obtain better performance from people involved in learning and collaborative tasks. Humanintensive processes in software engineering make it similar to those areas. In this paper, we propose using a kind of people classification to improve those processes of software engineering where human behaviour is a critical influence on their success.Eje: IngenierĂa en SoftwareRed de Universidades con Carreras en InformĂĄtica (RedUNCI

A decision-making approach for investigating the potential effects of near sourcing on supply chain
Purpose - Near sourcing is starting to be regarded as a valid alternative to global sourcing in order to leverage supply chain (SC) responsiveness and economic efficiency. The present work proposes a decision-making approach developed in collaboration with a leading Italian retailer that was willing to turn the global store furniture procurement process into near sourcing. Design/methodology/approach - Action research is employed. The limitations of the traditional SC organisation and purchasing process of the company are first identified. On such basis, an inventory management model is applied to run spreadsheet estimates where different purchasing and SC management strategies are adopted to determine the solution providing the lowest cost performance. Finally, a risk analysis of the selected best SC arrangement is conducted and results are discussed. Findings - Switching from East Asian suppliers to continental vendors enables a SC reengineering that increases flexibility and responsiveness to demand uncertainty which, together with decreased transportation costs, assures economic viability, thus proving the benefits of near sourcing. Research limitations/implications - The decision-making framework provides a methodological roadmap to address the comparison between near and global sourcing policies and to calculate the savings of the former against the latter. The approach could include additional organisational aspects and cost categories impacting on near sourcing and could be adapted to investigate different products, services, and business sectors. Originality/value - The work provides SC researchers and practitioners with a structured approach for understanding what drives companies to adopt near sourcing and for quantitatively assessing its advantage
Customer requirements based ERP customization using AHP technique
Purposeâ Customization is a difficult task for many organizations implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new framework based on customersâ requirements to examine the ERP customization choices for the enterprise. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) technique has been applied complementarily with this framework to prioritize ERP customization choices. \ud
\ud
Design/methodology/approachâ Based on empirical literature, the paper proposed an ERP customization framework anchored on the customer's requirements. A case study research method was used to evaluate the applicability of the framework in a real-life setting. In a case study with 15 practitioners working on the vendor's and the client's sides in an ERP implementation, the paper applied the framework jointly with the AHP technique to prioritize the feasible customization choices for ERP implementation. \ud
\ud
Findingsâ The paper demonstrates the applicability of the framework in identifying the various feasible choices for the client organization to consider when they decide to customize their selected ERP product. \ud
\ud
Research limitations/implicationsâ Further case studies need to be carried out in various contexts to acquire knowledge about the generalizability of the observations. This will also contribute to refining the proposed ERP customization framework. \ud
\ud
Practical implicationsâ Very few literature sources suggest methods for exploring and evaluating customization options in ERP projects from requirements engineering perspective. The proposed framework helps practitioners and consultants anchor the customization decisions on the customer's requirements and use a well-established prioritization technique, AHP, to identify the feasible customization choices for the implementing enterprise. \ud
\ud
Originality/valueâ No previously published research studies provide an approach to prioritize customization choices for ERP anchored on the customer's requirements
Application of fuzzy AHP approach to selection of organizational structure with consideration to contextual dimensions
The literature of organizational structure design is relatively rich along with conceptual and complex patterns. This complexity arising from the number of elements and numerous relations in addition to the nature of variables. Thereby, the lack of operational decision-making models is felt to propose adequate structural designs in practice. In this article, the researchers employ a fuzzy multi attribute decision making model (FMADM) to select the most suitable organizational structure based on expertâs judgments and by deploying contextual dimensions of the organization. Since the organizational changes especially in the structural levels are along with resistances among involved staffs, the implementation of this model is a supportive tool in addition to help the managers to make a qualified decision and change.©2012 the Authors. âDomain Of Supply Chain Management - A State Of Artâ.
A supply chain is a network of facilities and distribution channels that encompasses the procurement of materials, production, assembly and delivery of product or service to the customer. The management of the supply chain and the roles of various actors involved differ from industry to industry and company to company. As a result Supply Chain Management (SCM) has become a vital issue for manufacturers, professionals and researchers. It is felt that to manage the supply chain effectively entire structure of supply chain must be understood properly. This paper attempts to provide the reader a complete picture of supply chain management through a systematic literature review. It presents a state of art on SCM by systematically arranging main activities in supply chain. In addition the step-by-step approach for understanding the breadth and depth of Supply Chain is proposed which consequently explores the domain of SCM.A supply chain is a network of facilities and distribution channels that encompasses the procurement of materials, production, assembly and delivery of product or service to the customer. Succeeding with business process reengineering in the financial service industry
A Doctoral Thesis Presented to the Faculty of
The Engineering and Built Environment at the
University of Witwatersrand
In Fulfilment of Requirements
For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Johannesburg, South Africa
May, 2016The problem of failed projects has been and still is an interesting topic with many
views emanating through various research avenues. The research presented in
this thesis is one such avenue. In pursuit of Business Process Reengineering
(BPR) via defined and executed projects, the financial institutions of South Africa
have not seemed able to succeed in executing a high number of successful BPR
projects. The research presented in this thesis was undertaken to understand why
this was, even though industry accepted methodologies such as Six Sigma and
Lean Engineering were adopted.
The research focused on understanding what factors influenced the successful
execution of BPR projects, by reviewing prior research and by conducting a case
study. This analysis led to the development of the âOrganisation Ring of Influenceâ
(ORoI) model which highlighted the impact and influence organisation structures
and organisation behaviours have on the successful execution of BPR projects.
The primary objective of the research, however, was to take this understanding
and combine it with the thinking of Systems Theory, more specifically the sociotechnical
problem solving methodology developed by Peter Checkland, known as
Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), in order to develop a management approach. If
applied, the management approach would improve the probability of success of
executed BPR projects. The management approach developed was termed the
âPre Project Organisation Environment Enablement Modelâ (P2OE2M).MT201
