An Ontology for Submarine Feature Representation on Charts
A landform is a subjective individuation of a part of a terrain. Landform recognition is a difficult task because its definition usually relies on a qualitative and fuzzy description. Achieving automatic recognition of landforms requires a formal definition of the landforms properties and their modelling. In the maritime domain, the International Hydrographic Organisation published a standard terminology of undersea feature names which formalises a set of definition mainly for naming and communication purpose. This terminology is here used as a starting point for the definition of an ontology of undersea features and their automatic classification from a terrain model. First, an ontology of undersea features is built. The ontology is composed of an application domain ontology describing the main properties and relationships between features and a representation ontology deals with representation on a chart where features are portrayed by soundings and isobaths. A database model was generated from the ontology. Geometrical properties describing the feature shape are computed from soundings and isobaths and are used for feature classification. An example of automatic classification on a nautical chart is presented and results and on-going research are discussed
An Extended Semantic Interoperability Model for Distributed Electronic Health Record Based on Fuzzy Ontology Semantics
Semantic interoperability of distributed electronic health record (EHR) systems is a crucial problem for querying EHR and machine learning projects. The main contribution of this paper is to propose and implement a fuzzy ontology-based semantic interoperability framework for distributed EHR systems. First, a separate standard ontology is created for each input source. Second, a unified ontology is created that merges the previously created ontologies. However, this crisp ontology is not able to answer vague or uncertain queries. We thirdly extend the integrated crisp ontology into a fuzzy ontology by using a standard methodology and fuzzy logic to handle this limitation. The used dataset includes identified data of 100 patients. The resulting fuzzy ontology includes 27 class, 58 properties, 43 fuzzy data types, 451 instances, 8376 axioms, 5232 logical axioms, 1216 declarative axioms, 113 annotation axioms, and 3204 data property assertions. The resulting ontology is tested using real data from the MIMIC-III intensive care unit dataset and real archetypes from openEHR. This fuzzy ontology-based system helps physicians accurately query any required data about patients from distributed locations using near-natural language queries. An Ontology-based Approach for Personalized Itinerary Search
Personalization plays an important role in information retrieval systems. In the field of transportation, and more specifically multimodal transportation, personalization represents an efficient way for travelers to find appropriate routes. Providing travelers with the relevant information to their needs and preferences is challenging for transportation systems. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based approach for personalized itinerary search. Our proposal is based on modeling each user using an ontological fuzzy modular profile that incorporates a set of fuzzy modules representing several aspects of the user’s description. The approach is applied in the transportation domain and integrates a new method of matching between the profile ontology and the domain ontology to obtain personalized responses for individual user profiles. Our proposal was implemented and evaluated. Obtained results show that personalization coupled with ontology matching enables an improvement of query reformulation
Automatic domain ontology extraction for context-sensitive opinion mining
Automated analysis of the sentiments presented in online consumer feedbacks can facilitate both organizations’ business strategy development and individual consumers’ comparison shopping. Nevertheless, existing opinion mining methods either adopt a context-free sentiment classification approach or rely on a large number of manually annotated training examples to perform context sensitive sentiment classification. Guided by the design science research methodology, we illustrate the design, development, and evaluation of a novel fuzzy domain ontology based contextsensitive opinion mining system. Our novel ontology extraction mechanism underpinned by a variant of Kullback-Leibler divergence can automatically acquire contextual sentiment knowledge across various product domains to improve the sentiment analysis processes. Evaluated based on a benchmark dataset and real consumer reviews collected from Amazon.com, our system shows remarkable performance improvement over the context-free baseline
On the similarity relation within fuzzy ontology components
Ontology reuse is an important research issue. Ontology
merging, integration, mapping, alignment and versioning
are some of its subprocesses. A considerable research work has
been conducted on them. One common issue to these subprocesses
is the problem of defining similarity relations among ontologies
components. Crisp ontologies become less suitable in all domains
in which the concepts to be represented have vague, uncertain
and imprecise definitions. Fuzzy ontologies are developed to
cope with these aspects. They are equally concerned with the
problem of ontology reuse. Defining similarity relations within
fuzzy context may be realized basing on the linguistic similarity
among ontologies components or may be deduced from their
intentional definitions. The latter approach needs to be dealt
with differently in crisp and fuzzy ontologies. This is the scope
