    Identification of Supply Chains Based on Input-Output Data

    The paper focuses on supply chain modeling issues, namely how subspace identification techniques can be used to characterize the strength of relations between certain system parameters. This might be useful when no knowledge about the internal workings or inner structure of the system is available, thus only blackbox like approaches can be utilized. Here let us show how supply chains can be identified and modeled by deterministic linear state space models and how the accuracy of the identified model reflects the relation between certain system parameters

    Proportional-Integral-Derivative Gain-Scheduling Control of a Magnetic Levitation System

    The paper presents a gain-scheduling control design procedure for classical Proportional-Integral-Derivative controllers (PID-GS-C) for positioning system. The method is applied to a Magnetic Levitation System with Two Electromagnets (MLS2EM) laboratory equipment, which allows several experimental verifications of the proposed solution. The nonlinear model of MLS2EM is linearized at seven operating points. A state feedback control structure is first designed to stabilize the process. PID control and PID-GS-C structures are next designed to ensure zero steady-state control error and bumpless switching between PID controllers for the linearized models. Real-time experimental results are presented for validation.

    RESULTS AND CHALLENGES OF ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS USED FOR DECISION-MAKING AND CONTROL IN MEDICAL APPLICATIONS

    The aim of this paper is to present several approaches by which technology can assist medical decision-making. This is an essential, but also a difficult activity, which implies a large number of medical and technical aspects. But, more important, it involves humans: on the one hand, the patient, who has a medical problem and who requires the best solution; on the other hand, the physician, who should be able to provide, in any circumstances, a decision or a prediction regarding the current and the future medical status of the patient. The technology, in general, and particularly the Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools could help both of them, and it is assisted by appropriate theory regarding modeling tools. One of the most powerful mechanisms that can be used in this field is the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). This paper presents some of the results obtained by the Process Control group of the Politehnica University Timisoara, Romania, in the field of ANNs applied to modeling, prediction and decision-making related to medical systems. An Iterative Learning Control-based approach to batch training a feedforward ANN architecture is given. The paper includes authors’ concerns in this domain and emphasizes that these intelligent models, even if they are artificial, are able to make decisions, being useful tools for prevention, early detection and personalized healthcare

    Predictive control approaches to fault tolerant control of wind turbines

    This thesis focuses on active fault tolerant control (AFTC) of wind turbine systems. Faults in wind turbine systems can be in the form of sensor faults, actuator faults, or component faults. These faults can occur in different locations, such as the wind speed sensor, the generator system, drive train system or pitch system. In this thesis, some AFTC schemes are proposed for wind turbine faults in the above locations. Model predictive control (MPC) is used in these schemes to design the wind turbine controller such that system constraints and dual control goals of the wind turbine are considered. In order to deal with the nonlinearity in the turbine model, MPC is combined with Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy modelling. Different fault diagnosis methods are also proposed in different AFTC schemes to isolate or estimate wind turbine faults.The main contributions of the thesis are summarized as follows:A new effective wind speed (EWS) estimation method via least-squares support vector machines (LSSVM) is proposed. Measurements from the wind turbine rotor speed sensor and the generator speed sensor are utilized by LSSVM to estimate the EWS. Following the EWS estimation, a wind speed sensor fault isolation scheme via LSSVM is proposed.A robust predictive controller is designed to consider the EWS estimation error. This predictive controller serves as the baseline controller for the wind turbine system operating in the region below rated wind speed.T-S fuzzy MPC combining MPC and T-S fuzzy modelling is proposed to design the wind turbine controller. MPC can deal with wind turbine system constraints externally. On the other hand, T-S fuzzy modelling can approximate the nonlinear wind turbine system with a linear time varying (LTV) model such that controller design can be based on this LTV model. Therefore, the advantages of MPC and T-S fuzzy modelling are both preserved in the proposed T-S fuzzy MPC.A T-S fuzzy observer, based on online eigenvalue assignment, is proposed as the sensor fault isolation scheme for the wind turbine system. In this approach, the fuzzy observer is proposed to deal with the nonlinearity in the wind turbine system and estimate system states. Furthermore, the residual signal generated from this fuzzy observer is used to isolate the faulty sensor.A sensor fault diagnosis strategy utilizing both analytical and hardware redundancies is proposed for wind turbine systems. This approach is proposed due to the fact that in the real application scenario, both analytical and hardware redundancies of wind turbines are available for designing AFTC systems.An actuator fault estimation method based on moving horizon estimation (MHE) is proposed for wind turbine systems. The estimated fault by MHE is then compensated by a T-S fuzzy predictive controller. The fault estimation unit and the T-S fuzzy predictive controller are combined to form an AFTC scheme for wind turbine actuator faults

    Relaxed LMI conditions for control of nonlinear Takagi-Sugeno models

    Los problemas de optimización de desigualdades matriciales lineales en control borroso se han convertido en la herramienta más utilizada en dicha área desde los años 90. Muchos sistemas no lineales pueden ser modelados como sistemas borrosos de modo que el control borroso puede considerarse como una técnica de control no lineal. Aunque se han obtenido muchos y buenos resultados, quedan algunas fuentes de conservadurismo cuando se comparan con otros enfoques de control no lineal. Esta tesis discute dichas cuestiones de conservadurismo y plantea nuevos enfoques para resolverlas. La principal ventaja de la formulación mediante desigualdades matriciales lineales es la posibilidad de asegurar estabilidad y prestaciones de un sistema no lineal modelado como un sistema borroso Takagi-Sugeno. Estos modelos están formados por un conjunto de modelos lineales eligiendo el sistema a aplicar mediante el uso de unas reglas borrosas. Estas reglas se traducen en funciones de interpolación o de pertenecía que nos indican el grado de validez de un modelo lineal respecto del resto. El mayor problema que presentan estas técnicas basadas en desigualdades matriciales lineales es que las funciones de pertenencia no están incluidas en las condiciones de estabilidad del sistema, lo que significa que se prueba la estabilidad y prestaciones para cualquier forma de interpolación entre los diferentes modelos lineales. Esto genera una fuente de conservadurismo que sería conveniente limitar. En la tesis doctoral se presentan varias metodologías capaces de trasladar la información de las funciones de pertenencia del sistema al problema basado en desigualdades matriciales lineales de estabilidad y prestaciones. Las dos principales aportaciones propuestas se basan, respectivamente, en introducir una serie de matrices de relajación que permitan incorporar esta información y en aprovechar la descripción de una amplia clase de sistemas borrosos en productos tensoriales de...Ariño Latorre, CV.
