    Leonov’s nonlocal reduction technique for nonlinear integro-differential equations

    Starting from pioneering works by Lur’e, Popov and Zames, global stability theory for nonlinear control systems has been primarily focused on systems with only one equilibrium. Global stability criteria for other kinds of attractors (such as e.g. infinite sets of equilibria) are not well studied and typically require special tools, primarily based on the Lyapunov method. Analysis of stability becomes especially complicated for infinite-dimensional dynamical systems with multiple equilibria, e.g. systems described by delay or more general convolutionary equations. In this paper, we propose novel stability criteria for infinite-dimensional systems with periodic nonlinearities, which have infinite sets of equilibria and describe dynamics of phase-locked loops and other synchronization circuits. Our method combines Leonov’s nonlocal reduction technique with the idea of Popov’s “integral indices” and allows to obtain new frequency-domain conditions, ensuring the convergence of every solution to one of the equilibria points

    We review the properties of optical spatial dissipative solitons (SDS). These are stable, self‐localized optical excitations sitting on a uniform, or quasi‐uniform, background in a dissipative environment like a nonlinear optical cavity. Indeed, in optics they are often termed “cavity solitons.” We discuss their dynamics and interactions in both ideal and imperfect systems, making comparison with experiments. SDS in lasers offer important advantages for applications. We review candidate schemes and the tremendous recent progress in semiconductor‐based cavity soliton lasers. We examine SDS in periodic structures, and we show how SDS can be quantitatively related to the locking of fronts. We conclude with an assessment of potential applications of SDS in photonics, arguing that best use of their particular features is made by exploiting their mobility, for example in all‐optical delay lines

    Self-synchronization of unbalanced rotors and the swing equation

    We consider a problem of self-synchronization in a system of vibro-exciters (rotors) installed on a common oscillating platform. This problem was studied by I.I. Blekhman and later by L. Sperling. Extending their approach, we derive the equations for a system of n rotors and show that, separating the slow and fast motions, the “slow” dynamics of this systems reduces to a special case of a so-called swing equation that is well studied in theory of power networks. On the other hand, the system may be considered as “pendulum-like” system with multidimensional periodic nonlinearities. Using the theory of such systems developed in our previous works, we derive an analytic criteria for synchronization of two rotors. Unlike synchronization criteria available in mechanical literature, our criterion ensures global convergence of every trajectory to the synchronous manifold

    Lagrange Stabilization of Pendulum-like Systems: A Pseudo H-infinity Control Approach

    This paper studies the Lagrange stabilization of a class of nonlinear systems whose linear part has a singular system matrix and which have multiple periodic (in state) nonlinearities. Both state and output feedback Lagrange stabilization problems are considered. The paper develops a pseudo H-infinity control theory to solve these stabilization problems. In a similar fashion to the Strict Bounded Real Lemma in classic H-infinity control theory, a Pseudo Strict Bounded Real Lemma is established for systems with a single unstable pole. Sufficient conditions for the synthesis of state feedback and output feedback controllers are given to ensure that the closed-loop system is pseudo strict bounded real. The pseudo H-infinity control approach is applied to solve state feedback and output feedback Lagrange stabilization problems for nonlinear systems with multiple nonlinearities. An example is given to illustrate the proposed method
