Knowledge-how: Interrogatives and Free Relatives
It has been widely accepted since Stanley and Williamson (2001) that the only linguistically acceptable semantic treatments for sentences of the form ‘S knows how to V’ involve treating the wh-complement ‘how to V’ as an interrogative phrase, denoting a set of propositions. Recently a number of authors have suggested that the ‘how to V’ phrase denotes not a proposition, but an object. This view points toward a prima facie plausible non-propositional semantics for knowledge-how, which treats ‘how to V’ as a free relative noun phrase. In this paper I argue that the free relative semantics is implausible. I show that linguistic phenomena which seem to support a free relative semantics can be explained by the supporter of an interrogative semantics, and demonstrate that standard linguistic tests strongly suggest that ‘how to V’ has an interrogative reading, and no free relative reading
Resumptions, Weak Bisimilarity and Big-Step Semantics for While with Interactive I/O: An Exercise in Mixed Induction-Coinduction
We look at the operational semantics of languages with interactive I/O
through the glasses of constructive type theory. Following on from our earlier
work on coinductive trace-based semantics for While, we define several big-step
semantics for While with interactive I/O, based on resumptions and
termination-sensitive weak bisimilarity. These require nesting inductive
definitions in coinductive definitions, which is interesting both
mathematically and from the point-of-view of implementation in a proof
assistant.
After first defining a basic semantics of statements in terms of resumptions
with explicit internal actions (delays), we introduce a semantics in terms of
delay-free resumptions that essentially removes finite sequences of delays on
the fly from those resumptions that are responsive. Finally, we also look at a
semantics in terms of delay-free resumptions supplemented with a silent
divergence option. This semantics hinges on decisions between convergence and
divergence and is only equivalent to the basic one classically.
We have fully formalized our development in Coq.Comment: In Proceedings SOS 2010, arXiv:1008.190
Cut-free Calculi and Relational Semantics for Temporal STIT Logics
We present cut-free labelled sequent calculi for a central formalism in logics of agency: STIT logics with temporal operators. These include sequent systems for Ldm , Tstit and Xstit. All calculi presented possess essential structural properties such as contraction- and cut-admissibility. The labelled calculi G3Ldm and G3Tstit are shown sound and complete relative to irreflexive temporal frames. Additionally, we extend current results by showing that also Xstit can be characterized through relational frames, omitting the use of BT+AC frames
Sequential Composition in the Presence of Intermediate Termination (Extended Abstract)
The standard operational semantics of the sequential composition operator
gives rise to unbounded branching and forgetfulness when transparent process
expressions are put in sequence. Due to transparency, the correspondence
between context-free and pushdown processes fails modulo bisimilarity, and it
is not clear how to specify an always terminating half counter. We propose a
revised operational semantics for the sequential composition operator in the
context of intermediate termination. With the revised operational semantics, we
eliminate transparency, allowing us to establish a close correspondence between
context-free processes and pushdown processes. Moreover, we prove the reactive
Turing powerfulness of TCP with iteration and nesting with the revised
operational semantics for sequential composition.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS/SOS 2017, arXiv:1709.00049. arXiv admin note:

Non uniform (hyper/multi)coherence spaces
In (hyper)coherence semantics, proofs/terms are cliques in (hyper)graphs.
Intuitively, vertices represent results of computations and the edge relation
witnesses the ability of being assembled into a same piece of data or a same
(strongly) stable function, at arrow types. In (hyper)coherence semantics, the
argument of a (strongly) stable functional is always a (strongly) stable
function. As a consequence, comparatively to the relational semantics, where
there is no edge relation, some vertices are missing. Recovering these vertices
is essential for the purpose of reconstructing proofs/terms from their
interpretations. It shall also be useful for the comparison with other
semantics, like game semantics. In [BE01], Bucciarelli and Ehrhard introduced a
so called non uniform coherence space semantics where no vertex is missing. By
constructing the co-free exponential we set a new version of this last
semantics, together with non uniform versions of hypercoherences and
multicoherences, a new semantics where an edge is a finite multiset. Thanks to
the co-free construction, these non uniform semantics are deterministic in the
sense that the intersection of a clique and of an anti-clique contains at most
one vertex, a result of interaction, and extensionally collapse onto the
corresponding uniform semantics.Comment: 32 page
