Policy Enforcement with Proactive Libraries
Software libraries implement APIs that deliver reusable functionalities. To
correctly use these functionalities, software applications must satisfy certain
correctness policies, for instance policies about the order some API methods
can be invoked and about the values that can be used for the parameters. If
these policies are violated, applications may produce misbehaviors and failures
at runtime. Although this problem is general, applications that incorrectly use
API methods are more frequent in certain contexts. For instance, Android
provides a rich and rapidly evolving set of APIs that might be used incorrectly
by app developers who often implement and publish faulty apps in the
marketplaces. To mitigate this problem, we introduce the novel notion of
proactive library, which augments classic libraries with the capability of
proactively detecting and healing misuses at run- time. Proactive libraries
blend libraries with multiple proactive modules that collect data, check the
correctness policies of the libraries, and heal executions as soon as the
violation of a correctness policy is detected. The proactive modules can be
activated or deactivated at runtime by the users and can be implemented without
requiring any change to the original library and any knowledge about the
applications that may use the library. We evaluated proactive libraries in the
context of the Android ecosystem. Results show that proactive libraries can
automati- cally overcome several problems related to bad resource usage at the

An overview of Mirjam and WeaveC
In this chapter, we elaborate on the design of an industrial-strength aspectoriented programming language and weaver for large-scale software development. First, we present an analysis on the requirements of a general purpose aspect-oriented language that can handle crosscutting concerns in ASML software. We also outline a strategy on working with aspects in large-scale software development processes. In our design, we both re-use existing aspect-oriented language abstractions and propose new ones to address the issues that we identified in our analysis. The quality of the code ensured by the realized language and weaver has a positive impact both on maintenance effort and lead-time in the first line software development process. As evidence, we present a short evaluation of the language and weaver as applied today in the software development process of ASML
Multi-Agent Cooperation for Particle Accelerator Control
We present practical investigations in a real industrial controls environment
for justifying theoretical DAI (Distributed Artificial Intelligence) results,
and we discuss theoretical aspects of practical investigations for
accelerator control and operation. A generalized hypothesis is introduced,
based on a unified view of control, monitoring, diagnosis, maintenance and
repair tasks leading to a general method of cooperation for expert systems
by exchanging hypotheses. This has been tested for task and result sharing
cooperation scenarios. Generalized hypotheses also allow us to treat the
repetitive diagnosis-recovery cycle as task sharing cooperation. Problems
with such a loop or even recursive calls between the different agents are
discussed
Synthetic Semiotics: on modelling and simulating the \ud emergence of sign processes
Based on formal-theoretical principles about the \ud
sign processes involved, we have built synthetic experiments \ud
to investigate the emergence of communication based on \ud
symbols and indexes in a distributed system of sign users, \ud
following theoretical constraints from C.S.Peirce theory of \ud
signs, following a Synthetic Semiotics approach. In this paper, we summarize these computational experiments and results regarding associative learning processes of symbolic sign modality and cognitive conditions in an evolutionary process for the emergence of either symbol-based or index-based communication
