    Formal Verification with Confidence Intervals to Establish Quality of Service Properties of Software Systems

    Formal verification is used to establish the compliance of software and hardware systems with important classes of requirements. System compliance with functional requirements is frequently analyzed using techniques such as model checking, and theorem proving. In addition, a technique called quantitative verification supports the analysis of the reliability, performance, and other quality-of-service (QoS) properties of systems that exhibit stochastic behavior. In this paper, we extend the applicability of quantitative verification to the common scenario when the probabilities of transition between some or all states of the Markov models analyzed by the technique are unknown, but observations of these transitions are available. To this end, we introduce a theoretical framework, and a tool chain that establish confidence intervals for the QoS properties of a software system modelled as a Markov chain with uncertain transition probabilities. We use two case studies from different application domains to assess the effectiveness of the new quantitative verification technique. Our experiments show that disregarding the above source of uncertainty may significantly affect the accuracy of the verification results, leading to wrong decisions, and low-quality software systems

    Bayesian Verification under Model Uncertainty

    Machine learning enables systems to build and update domain models based on runtime observations. In this paper, we study statistical model checking and runtime verification for systems with this ability. Two challenges arise: (1) Models built from limited runtime data yield uncertainty to be dealt with. (2) There is no definition of satisfaction w.r.t. uncertain hypotheses. We propose such a definition of subjective satisfaction based on recently introduced satisfaction functions. We also propose the BV algorithm as a Bayesian solution to runtime verification of subjective satisfaction under model uncertainty. BV provides user-definable stochastic bounds for type I and II errors. We discuss empirical results from an example application to illustrate our ideas.Comment: Accepted at SEsCPS @ ICSE 201

    Dependability checking with StoCharts: Is train radio reliable enough for trains?

    Performance, dependability and quality of service (QoS) are prime aspects of the UML modelling domain. To capture these aspects effectively in the design phase, we have recently proposed STOCHARTS, a conservative extension of UML statechart diagrams. In this paper, we apply the STOCHART formalism to a safety critical design problem. We model a part of the European Train Control System specification, focusing on the risks of wireless communication failures in future high-speed cross-European trains. Stochastic model checking with the model checker PROVER enables us to derive constraints under which the central quality requirements are satisfied by the STOCHART model. The paper illustrates the flexibility and maturity of STOCHARTS to model real problems in safety critical system design

    FACT : A Probabilistic Model Checker for Formal Verification with Confidence Intervals

    We introduce FACT, a probabilistic model checker that computes confidence intervals for the evaluated properties of Markov chains with unknown transition probabilities when observations of these transitions are available. FACT is unaffected by the unquantified estimation errors generated by the use of point probability estimates, a common practice that limits the applicability of quantitative verification. As such, FACT can prevent invalid decisions in the construction and analysis of systems, and extends the applicability of quantitative verification to domains in which unknown estimation errors are unacceptable

In this paper, we extend on this bare feasibility result in two important directions. First, we sketch the cornerstones of a mechanizable translation of StoCharts to MoDeST. The latter is a process algebra-based formalism supported by the Motor/Mƶbius tool tandem. Second, we exploit this translation for a detailed analysis of the train radio case study

    Model based safety analysis for an Unmanned Aerial System

    This paper aims at describing safety architectures of autonomous systems by using Event-B formal method. The autonomous systems combine various activities which can be organised in layers. The Event-B formalism well supports the rigorous design of this kind of systems. Its refinement mechanism allows a progressive modelling by checking the correctness and the relevance of the models by discharging proof obligations. The application of the Event-B method within the framework of layered architecture specification enables the emergence of desired global properties with relation to layer interactions. The safety objectives are derived in each layer and they involve static and dynamic properties such as an independence property, a redundant property or a sequential property. The originality of our approach is to consider a refinement process between two layers in which the abstract model is the model of the lower layer. In our modelling, we distinguish nominal behaviour and abnormal behaviour in order to well establish failure propagation in our architecture

    The role of the real-time simulation facility, SIMFAC, in the design, development and performance verification of the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS) with man-in-the-loop

    The SIMFAC has played a vital role in the design, development, and performance verification of the shuttle remote manipulator system (SRMS) to be installed in the space shuttle orbiter. The facility provides for realistic man-in-the-loop operation of the SRMS by an operator in the operator complex, a flightlike crew station patterned after the orbiter aft flight deck with all necessary man machine interface elements, including SRMS displays and controls and simulated out-of-the-window and CCTV scenes. The characteristics of the manipulator system, including arm and joint servo dynamics and control algorithms, are simulated by a comprehensive mathematical model within the simulation subsystem of the facility. Major studies carried out using SIMFAC include: SRMS parameter sensitivity evaluations; the development, evaluation, and verification of operating procedures; and malfunction simulation and analysis of malfunction performance. Among the most important and comprehensive man-in-the-loop simulations carried out to date on SIMFAC are those which support SRMS performance verification and certification when the SRMS is part of the integrated orbiter-manipulator system
