Online Mutual Foreground Segmentation for Multispectral Stereo Videos
The segmentation of video sequences into foreground and background regions is
a low-level process commonly used in video content analysis and smart
surveillance applications. Using a multispectral camera setup can improve this
process by providing more diverse data to help identify objects despite adverse
imaging conditions. The registration of several data sources is however not
trivial if the appearance of objects produced by each sensor differs
substantially. This problem is further complicated when parallax effects cannot
be ignored when using close-range stereo pairs. In this work, we present a new
method to simultaneously tackle multispectral segmentation and stereo
registration. Using an iterative procedure, we estimate the labeling result for
one problem using the provisional result of the other. Our approach is based on
the alternating minimization of two energy functions that are linked through
the use of dynamic priors. We rely on the integration of shape and appearance
cues to find proper multispectral correspondences, and to properly segment
objects in low contrast regions. We also formulate our model as a frame
processing pipeline using higher order terms to improve the temporal coherence
of our results. Our method is evaluated under different configurations on

Evolution of A Common Vector Space Approach to Multi-Modal Problems
A set of methods to address computer vision problems has been developed. Video un- derstanding is an activate area of research in recent years. If one can accurately identify salient objects in a video sequence, these components can be used in information retrieval and scene analysis. This research started with the development of a course-to-fine frame- work to extract salient objects in video sequences. Previous work on image and video frame background modeling involved methods that ranged from simple and efficient to accurate but computationally complex. It will be shown in this research that the novel approach to implement object extraction is efficient and effective that outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods. However, the drawback to this method is the inability to deal with non-rigid motion.
With the rapid development of artificial neural networks, deep learning approaches are explored as a solution to computer vision problems in general. Focusing on image and text, the image (or video frame) understanding can be achieved using CVS. With this concept, modality generation and other relevant applications such as automatic im- age description, text paraphrasing, can be explored. Specifically, video sequences can be modeled by Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), the greater depth of the RNN leads to smaller error, but that makes the gradient in the network unstable during training.To overcome this problem, a Batch-Normalized Recurrent Highway Network (BNRHN) was developed and tested on the image captioning (image-to-text) task. In BNRHN, the highway layers are incorporated with batch normalization which diminish the gradient vanishing and exploding problem. In addition, a sentence to vector encoding framework that is suitable for advanced natural language processing is developed. This semantic text embedding makes use of the encoder-decoder model which is trained on sentence paraphrase pairs (text-to-text). With this scheme, the latent representation of the text is shown to encode sentences with common semantic information with similar vector rep- resentations. In addition to image-to-text and text-to-text, an image generation model is developed to generate image from text (text-to-image) or another image (image-to- image) based on the semantics of the content. The developed model, which refers to the Multi-Modal Vector Representation (MMVR), builds and encodes different modalities into a common vector space that achieve the goal of keeping semantics and conversion between text and image bidirectional. The concept of CVS is introduced in this research to deal with multi-modal conversion problems. In theory, this method works not only on text and image, but also can be generalized to other modalities, such as video and audio. The characteristics and performance are supported by both theoretical analysis and experimental results. Interestingly, the MMVR model is one of the many possible ways to build CVS. In the final stages of this research, a simple and straightforward framework to build CVS, which is considered as an alternative to the MMVR model, is presented
Tracking interacting targets in multi-modal sensors
PhDObject tracking is one of the fundamental tasks in various applications such as surveillance,
sports, video conferencing and activity recognition. Factors such as occlusions,
illumination changes and limited field of observance of the sensor make tracking a challenging
task. To overcome these challenges the focus of this thesis is on using multiple
modalities such as audio and video for multi-target, multi-modal tracking. Particularly,
this thesis presents contributions to four related research topics, namely, pre-processing of
input signals to reduce noise, multi-modal tracking, simultaneous detection and tracking,
and interaction recognition.
To improve the performance of detection algorithms, especially in the presence
of noise, this thesis investigate filtering of the input data through spatio-temporal feature
analysis as well as through frequency band analysis. The pre-processed data from multiple
modalities is then fused within Particle filtering (PF). To further minimise the discrepancy
between the real and the estimated positions, we propose a strategy that associates the
hypotheses and the measurements with a real target, using a Weighted Probabilistic Data
Association (WPDA). Since the filtering involved in the detection process reduces the
available information and is inapplicable on low signal-to-noise ratio data, we investigate
simultaneous detection and tracking approaches and propose a multi-target track-beforedetect
Particle filtering (MT-TBD-PF). The proposed MT-TBD-PF algorithm bypasses
the detection step and performs tracking in the raw signal. Finally, we apply the proposed
multi-modal tracking to recognise interactions between targets in regions within, as well
as outside the cameras’ fields of view.
The efficiency of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on large uni-modal,
multi-modal and multi-sensor scenarios from real world detections, tracking and event
recognition datasets and through participation in evaluation campaigns
Target classification in multimodal video
The presented thesis focuses on enhancing scene segmentation and target recognition methodologies via the mobilisation of contextual information. The algorithms developed to achieve this goal utilise multi-modal sensor information collected across varying scenarios,
from controlled indoor sequences to challenging rural locations. Sensors are chiefly colour band and long wave infrared (LWIR), enabling persistent surveillance capabilities across all environments. In the drive to develop effectual algorithms towards the outlined goals, key obstacles are identified and examined: the recovery of background scene structure from foreground object ’clutter’, employing contextual foreground knowledge to circumvent training a classifier when labeled data is not readily available, creating a labeled LWIR dataset to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) based object classifier and the viability of spatial context to address long range target classification when big data solutions are not enough. For an environment displaying frequent foreground clutter, such as a busy train station, we propose an algorithm exploiting foreground object presence to segment underlying scene structure that is not often visible. If such a location is outdoors and surveyed by an infra-red (IR) and visible band camera set-up, scene context and contextual knowledge transfer allows reasonable class predictions for thermal signatures within the scene to be determined. Furthermore, a labeled LWIR image corpus is created to train an infrared object classifier, using a CNN approach. The trained network demonstrates effective classification accuracy of 95% over 6 object classes. However, performance is not sustainable for IR targets acquired at long range due to low signal quality and classification accuracy drops. This is addressed by mobilising spatial context to affect network class scores, restoring robust classification capability
Unsupervised maritime target detection
The unsupervised detection of maritime targets in grey scale video is a difficult problem in maritime video surveillance. Most approaches assume that the camera is static and employ pixel-wise background modelling techniques for foreground detection; other methods rely on colour or thermal information to detect targets. These methods fail in real-world situations when the static camera assumption is violated, and colour or thermal data is unavailable. In defence and security applications, prior information and training samples of targets may be unavailable for training a classifier; the learning of a one class classifier for the background may be impossible as well. Thus, an unsupervised online approach that attempts to learn from the scene data is highly desirable. In this thesis, the characteristics of the maritime scene and the ocean texture are exploited for foreground detection. Two fast and effective methods are investigated for target detection. Firstly, online regionbased background texture models are explored for describing the appearance of the ocean. This approach avoids the need for frame registration because the model is built spatially rather than temporally. The texture appearance of the ocean is described using Local Binary Pattern (LBP) descriptors. Two models are proposed: one model is a Gaussian Mixture (GMM) and the other, referred to as a Sparse Texture Model (STM), is a set of histogram texture distributions. The foreground detections are optimized using a Graph Cut (GC) that enforces spatial coherence. Secondly, feature tracking is investigated as a means of detecting stable features in an image frame that typically correspond to maritime targets; unstable features are background regions. This approach is a Track-Before-Detect (TBD) concept and it is implemented using a hierarchical scheme for motion estimation, and matching of Scale- Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) appearance features. The experimental results show that these approaches are feasible for foreground detection in maritime video when the camera is either static or moving. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were generated for five test sequences and the Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) was analyzed for the performance of the proposed methods. The texture models, without GC optimization, achieved an AUC of 0.85 or greater on four out of the five test videos. At 50% True Positive Rate (TPR), these four test scenarios had a False Positive Rate (FPR) of less than 2%. With the GC optimization, an AUC of greater than 0.8 was achieved for all the test cases and the FPR was reduced in all cases when compared to the results without the GC. In comparison to the state of the art in background modelling for maritime scenes, our texture model methods achieved the best performance or comparable performance. The two texture models executed at a reasonable processing frame rate. The experimental results for TBD show that one may detect target features using a simple track score based on the track length. At 50% TPR a FPR of less than 4% is achieved for four out of the five test scenarios. These results are very promising for maritime target detection
