    Providing a Unified Account of Definite Noun Phrases in Discourse

    Linguistic theories typically assign various linguistic phenomena to one of the categories, syntactic, semantic, or pragmatic, as if the phenomena in each category were relatively independent of those in the others. However, various phenomena in discourse do not seem to yield comfortably to any account that is strictly a syntactic or semantic or pragmatic one. This paper focuses on particular phenomena of this sort-the use of various referring expressions such as definite noun phrases and pronouns-and examines their interaction with mechanisms used to maintain discourse coherence.Engineering and Applied Science

    Conceptions of Limited Attention and Discourse Focus.

    Walker (1996) presents a cache model of the operation of attention in the processing of discourse as an alternative to the focus space stack that was proposed previously by Grosz and Sidner (Grosz 1977a; Grosz and Sidner 1986). In this squib, we present a critical analysis of the cache model and of Walker's supporting evidence from anaphora in discourses with interruptions and from informationally redundant utterances. We argue that the cache model is underdetermined in several ways that are crucial to a comparison of the two models and conclude that Walker has not established the superiority of the cache model. We also argue that psycholinguistic evidence does not support the cache model over the focus stack model. Engineering and Applied Science

    Japanese Discourse and the Process of Centering

    This paper has two aims: (1) to generalize a computational account of discourse processing called CENTERING and apply it to discourse processing in Japanese, and (2) to provide some insights on the effect of syntactic factors in Japanese on discourse interpretation. We argue that while discourse interpretation is an inferential process, the syntactic cues constrain this process, and demonstrate this argument with respect to the interpretation of ZEROS, unexpressed arguments of the verb, in Japanese. The syntactic cues in Japanese discourse that we investigate are the morphological markers for grammatical TOPIC, the post-position wa, as well as those for grammatical functions such as SUBJECT, ga, OBJECT, o and OBJECT2, ni. In addition, we investigate the role of speakers\u27 EMPATHY, which is the perspective from which an event is described. This is morphologically indicated through the use of verbal compounding, i.e. the auxiliary use of verbs such as kureta, kita. Our results are based on a survey of native speakers of their interpretation of short discourses, consisting of minimal pairs, varied by one of the above factors. We demonstrate that these syntactic cues do indeed affect the interpretation of ZEROS, but that having previously been the TOPIC and being realized as a ZERO also contribute to an entity being interpreted as the TOPIC. We propose a new notion of TOPIC AMBIGUITY, and show that CENTERING provides constraints on when a ZERO can be interpreted as the TOPIC

    Interpretation of anaphoric expressions in the Lolita system

    This thesis addresses the issue of anaphora resolution in the large scale natural language system, LOLITA. The work described here involved a thorough analysis of the system’s initial performance, the collection of evidence for and the design of the new anaphora resolution algorithm, and subsequent implementation and evaluation of the system. Anaphoric expressions are elements of a discourse whose resolution depends on other elements of the preceding discourse. The processes involved in anaphora resolution have long been the subject of research in a variety of fields. The changes carried out to LOLITA first involved substantial improvements to the core, lower level modules which form the basis of the system. A major change specific to the interpretation of anaphoric expressions was then introduced. A system of filters, in which potential candidates for resolution are filtered according to a set of heuristics, has been changed to a system of penalties, where candidates accumulate points throughout the application of the heuristics. At the end of the process, the candidate with the smallest penalty is chosen as a referent. New heuristics, motivated by evidence drawn from research in linguistics, psycholinguistics and AI, have been added to the system. The system was evaluated using a procedure similar to that defined by MUC6 (DARPA 1995). Blind and open tests were used. The first evaluation was carried out after the general improvements to the lower level modules; the second after the introduction of the new anaphora algorithm. It was found that the general improvements led to a considerable rise in scores in both the blind and the open test sets. As a result of the anaphora specific improvements, on the other hand, the rise in scores on the open set was larger than the rise on the blind set. In the open set the category of pronouns showed the most marked improvement. It was concluded that it is the work carried out to the basic, lower level modules of a large scale system which leads to biggest gains. It was also concluded that considerable extra advantage can be gained by using the new weights-based algorithm together with the generally improved system

    Generating referring expressions in a domain of objects and processes

    This thesis presents a collection of algorithms and data structures for the generation of pronouns, anaphoric definite noun phrases, and one-anaphoric phrases. After a close analysis of the particular kinds of referring expressions that appear in a particular domain -that of cookery recipes -the thesis presents an appropriate ontology and a corresponding representation language. This ontology is then integrated into a wider framework for language generation as a whole, whereupon we show how the representation language can be successfully used to produce appropriate referring expressions for a range of complex object types.Amongst the more important ideas explored in the thesis are the following:• We introduce the notion of a generalized physical object as a way of representing singular entities, mass entities, and entities which are sets.• We adopt the view that planning operators are essentially underspecified events, and use this, in conjunction with a simple model of the hearer, to allow us to determine the appropriate level of detail at which a given plan should be described.• We make use of a discourse model that distinguishes local and global focus, and is closely tied to a notion of discourse structure; and we introduce a notion of DISCRIMINATORY POWER as a means to choosing the content of a referring expression.• We present a model of the generation of referring expressions that makes use of two levels of intermediate representation, and integrate this model with the use of a linguistically- founded grammar for noun phrases.The thesis ends by making some suggestions for further extensions to the work reported here
