    Pedestrian Flow Simulation Validation and Verification Techniques

    For the verification and validation of microscopic simulation models of pedestrian flow, we have performed experiments for different kind of facilities and sites where most conflicts and congestion happens e.g. corridors, narrow passages, and crosswalks. The validity of the model should compare the experimental conditions and simulation results with video recording carried out in the same condition like in real life e.g. pedestrian flux and density distributions. The strategy in this technique is to achieve a certain amount of accuracy required in the simulation model. This method is good at detecting the critical points in the pedestrians walking areas. For the calibration of suitable models we use the results obtained from analyzing the video recordings in Hajj 2009 and these results can be used to check the design sections of pedestrian facilities and exits. As practical examples, we present the simulation of pilgrim streams on the Jamarat bridge. The objectives of this study are twofold: first, to show through verification and validation that simulation tools can be used to reproduce realistic scenarios, and second, gather data for accurate predictions for designers and decision makers.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure

    Spatio-temporal Keyframe Control of Traffic Simulation using Coarse-to-Fine Optimization

    We present a novel traffic trajectory editing method which uses spatio-temporal keyframes to control vehicles during the simulation to generate desired traffic trajectories. By taking self-motivation, path following and collision avoidance into account, the proposed force-based traffic simulation framework updates vehicle's motions in both the Frenet coordinates and the Cartesian coordinates. With the way-points from users, lane-level navigation can be generated by reference path planning. With a given keyframe, the coarse-to-fine optimization is proposed to efficiently generate the plausible trajectory which can satisfy the spatio-temporal constraints. At first, a directed state-time graph constructed along the reference path is used to search for a coarse-grained trajectory by mapping the keyframe as the goal. Then, using the information extracted from the coarse trajectory as initialization, adjoint-based optimization is applied to generate a finer trajectory with smooth motions based on our force-based simulation.     Generative AI-enabled Mobile Tactical Multimedia Networks: Distribution, Generation, and Perception

    Mobile multimedia networks (MMNs) demonstrate great potential in delivering low-latency and high-quality entertainment and tactical applications, such as short-video sharing, online conferencing, and battlefield surveillance. For instance, in tactical surveillance of battlefields, scalability and sustainability are indispensable for maintaining large-scale military multimedia applications in MMNs. Therefore, many data-driven networking solutions are leveraged to optimize streaming strategies based on real-time traffic analysis and resource monitoring. In addition, generative AI (GAI) can not only increase the efficiency of existing data-driven solutions through data augmentation but also develop potential capabilities for MMNs, including AI-generated content (AIGC) and AI-aided perception. In this article, we propose the framework of GAI-enabled MMNs that leverage the capabilities of GAI in data and content synthesis to distribute high-quality and immersive interactive content in wireless networks. Specifically, we outline the framework of GAI-enabled MMNs and then introduce its three main features, including distribution, generation, and perception. Furthermore, we propose a second-score auction mechanism for allocating network resources by considering GAI model values and other metrics jointly. The experimental results show that the proposed auction mechanism can effectively increase social welfare by allocating resources and models with the highest user satisfaction

    Transportation is commonplace around our world. Numerous researchers dedicate great efforts to vast transportation research topics. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate and address a couple of transportation problems with respect to geographic discretization, pavement surface automatic examination, and traffic ow simulation, using advanced computational technologies. Many applications require a discretized 2D geographic map such that local information can be accessed efficiently. For example, map matching, which aligns a sequence of observed positions to a real-world road network, needs to find all the nearby road segments to the individual positions. To this end, the map is discretized by cells and each cell retains a list of road segments coincident with this cell. An efficient method is proposed to form such lists for the cells without costly overlapping tests. Furthermore, the method can be easily extended to 3D scenarios for fast triangle mesh voxelization. Pavement surface distress conditions are critical inputs for quantifying roadway infrastructure serviceability. Existing computer-aided automatic examination techniques are mainly based on 2D image analysis or 3D georeferenced data set. The disadvantage of information losses or extremely high costs impedes their effectiveness iv and applicability. In this study, a cost-effective Kinect-based approach is proposed for 3D pavement surface reconstruction and cracking recognition. Various cracking measurements such as alligator cracking, traverse cracking, longitudinal cracking, etc., are identified and recognized for their severity examinations based on associated geometrical features. Smart transportation is one of the core components in modern urbanization processes. Under this context, the Connected Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) system presents a promising solution towards the enhanced traffic safety and mobility through state-of-the-art wireless communications and autonomous driving techniques. Due to the different nature between the CAVs and the conventional Human- Driven-Vehicles (HDVs), it is believed that CAV-enabled transportation systems will revolutionize the existing understanding of network-wide traffic operations and re-establish traffic ow theory. This study presents a new continuum dynamics model for the future CAV-enabled traffic system, realized by encapsulating mutually-coupled vehicle interactions using virtual internal and external forces.     Skeleton Driven Non-rigid Motion Tracking and 3D Reconstruction

    This paper presents a method which can track and 3D reconstruct the non-rigid surface motion of human performance using a moving RGB-D camera. 3D reconstruction of marker-less human performance is a challenging problem due to the large range of articulated motions and considerable non-rigid deformations. Current approaches use local optimization for tracking. These methods need many iterations to converge and may get stuck in local minima during sudden articulated movements. We propose a puppet model-based tracking approach using skeleton prior, which provides a better initialization for tracking articulated movements. The proposed approach uses an aligned puppet model to estimate correct correspondences for human performance capture. We also contribute a synthetic dataset which provides ground truth locations for frame-by-frame geometry and skeleton joints of human subjects. Experimental results show that our approach is more robust when faced with sudden articulated motions, and provides better 3D reconstruction compared to the existing state-of-the-art approaches.Comment: Accepted in DICTA 201

    Visualizing the Motion Flow of Crowds

    In modern cities, massive population causes problems, like congestion, accident, violence and crime everywhere. Video surveillance system such as closed-circuit television cameras is widely used by security guards to monitor human behaviors and activities to manage, direct, or protect people. With the quantity and prolonged duration of the recorded videos, it requires a huge amount of human resources to examine these video recordings and keep track of activities and events. In recent years, new techniques in computer vision field reduce the barrier of entry, allowing developers to experiment more with intelligent surveillance video system. Different from previous research, this dissertation does not address any algorithm design concerns related to object detection or object tracking. This study will put efforts on the technological side and executing methodologies in data visualization to find the model of detecting anomalies. It would like to provide an understanding of how to detect the behavior of the pedestrians in the video and find out anomalies or abnormal cases by using techniques of data visualization
