First-Order Logic for Flow-Limited Authorization
We present the Flow-Limited Authorization First-Order Logic (FLAFOL), a logic
for reasoning about authorization decisions in the presence of information-flow
policies. We formalize the FLAFOL proof system, characterize its
proof-theoretic properties, and develop its security guarantees. In particular,
FLAFOL is the first logic to provide a non-interference guarantee while
supporting all connectives of first-order logic. Furthermore, this guarantee is
the first to combine the notions of non-interference from both authorization
logic and information-flow systems. All theorems in this paper are proven in

A Declarative Framework for Specifying and Enforcing Purpose-aware Policies
Purpose is crucial for privacy protection as it makes users confident that
their personal data are processed as intended. Available proposals for the
specification and enforcement of purpose-aware policies are unsatisfactory for
their ambiguous semantics of purposes and/or lack of support to the run-time
enforcement of policies.
In this paper, we propose a declarative framework based on a first-order
temporal logic that allows us to give a precise semantics to purpose-aware
policies and to reuse algorithms for the design of a run-time monitor enforcing
purpose-aware policies. We also show the complexity of the generation and use
of the monitor which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first such a result
in literature on purpose-aware policies.Comment: Extended version of the paper accepted at the 11th International

ACMiner: Extraction and Analysis of Authorization Checks in Android's Middleware
Billions of users rely on the security of the Android platform to protect
phones, tablets, and many different types of consumer electronics. While
Android's permission model is well studied, the enforcement of the protection
policy has received relatively little attention. Much of this enforcement is
spread across system services, taking the form of hard-coded checks within
their implementations. In this paper, we propose Authorization Check Miner
(ACMiner), a framework for evaluating the correctness of Android's access
control enforcement through consistency analysis of authorization checks.
ACMiner combines program and text analysis techniques to generate a rich set of
authorization checks, mines the corresponding protection policy for each
service entry point, and uses association rule mining at a service granularity
to identify inconsistencies that may correspond to vulnerabilities. We used
ACMiner to study the AOSP version of Android 7.1.1 to identify 28
vulnerabilities relating to missing authorization checks. In doing so, we
demonstrate ACMiner's ability to help domain experts process thousands of
authorization checks scattered across millions of lines of code
Security and Privacy Issues of Big Data
This chapter revises the most important aspects in how computing
infrastructures should be configured and intelligently managed to fulfill the
most notably security aspects required by Big Data applications. One of them is
privacy. It is a pertinent aspect to be addressed because users share more and
more personal data and content through their devices and computers to social
networks and public clouds. So, a secure framework to social networks is a very
hot topic research. This last topic is addressed in one of the two sections of
the current chapter with case studies. In addition, the traditional mechanisms
to support security such as firewalls and demilitarized zones are not suitable
to be applied in computing systems to support Big Data. SDN is an emergent
management solution that could become a convenient mechanism to implement
security in Big Data systems, as we show through a second case study at the end
of the chapter. This also discusses current relevant work and identifies open
issues.Comment: In book Handbook of Research on Trends and Future Directions in Big
