    Index finger motion recognition using self-advise support vector machine

    Because of the functionality of an index finger, the disability of its motion in the modern age can decrease the person's quality of life. As a part of rehabilitation therapy, the recognition of the index finger motion for rehabilitation purposes should be done properly. This paper proposes a novel recognition system of the index finger motion suing a cutting-edge method and its improvements. The proposed system consists of combination of feature extraction method, a dimensionality reduction and well-known classifier, Support Vector Machine (SVM). An improvement of SVM, Self-advise SVM (SA-SVM), is tested to evaluate and compare its performance with the original one. The experimental result shows that SA-SVM improves the classification performance by on average 0.63 %

    Feature Analysis for Classification of Physical Actions using surface EMG Data

    Based on recent health statistics, there are several thousands of people with limb disability and gait disorders that require a medical assistance. A robot assisted rehabilitation therapy can help them recover and return to a normal life. In this scenario, a successful methodology is to use the EMG signal based information to control the support robotics. For this mechanism to function properly, the EMG signal from the muscles has to be sensed and then the biological motor intention has to be decoded and finally the resulting information has to be communicated to the controller of the robot. An accurate detection of the motor intention requires a pattern recognition based categorical identification. Hence in this paper, we propose an improved classification framework by identification of the relevant features that drive the pattern recognition algorithm. Major contributions include a set of modified spectral moment based features and another relevant inter-channel correlation feature that contribute to an improved classification performance. Next, we conducted a sensitivity analysis of the classification algorithm to different EMG channels. Finally, the classifier performance is compared to that of the other state-of the art algorithm

    Adaptive learning to speed-up control of prosthetic hands: A few things everybody should know

    Domain adaptation methods have been proposed to reduce the training efforts needed to control an upper-limb prosthesis by adapting well performing models from previous subjects to the new subject. These studies generally reported impressive reductions in the required number of training samples to achieve a certain level of accuracy for intact subjects. We further investigate two popular methods in this field to verify whether this result also applies to amputees. Our findings show instead that this improvement can largely be attributed to a suboptimal hyperparameter configuration. When hyperparameters are appropriately tuned, the standard approach that does not exploit prior information performs on par with the more complicated transfer learning algorithms. Additionally, earlier studies erroneously assumed that the number of training samples relates proportionally to the efforts required from the subject. However, a repetition of a movement is the atomic unit for subjects and the total number of repetitions should therefore be used as reliable measure for training efforts. Also when correcting for this mistake, we do not find any performance increase due to the use of prior models
