    Overeducation in the early career of secondary education graduates : an analysis using sequence techniques

    Based on monthly observations of their labour market status in the first seven years after leaving education, this paper uses optimal matching sequence analysis to construct a typology of entry-patterns of Flemish secondary education graduates. Our main finding is that for a significant number of young people overeducation constitutes a persistent problem, affecting about half of the sample for nearly the full observation period. Investigating the risk factors involved, we find that some factors, such as having lower human capital endowments or facing job search constraints, enhance the risk of following disadvantageous trajectories. Having a lower reservation wage seems to make being persistently overeducated more likely. Yet, starting as ‘overeducated’ does not necessarily lead to being stuck in that state for the rest of the career. About 7% of our sample succeeds in entering an adequate position even after being overeducated for a relatively long period

    PRESS: A Novel Framework of Trajectory Compression in Road Networks

    Location data becomes more and more important. In this paper, we focus on the trajectory data, and propose a new framework, namely PRESS (Paralleled Road-Network-Based Trajectory Compression), to effectively compress trajectory data under road network constraints. Different from existing work, PRESS proposes a novel representation for trajectories to separate the spatial representation of a trajectory from the temporal representation, and proposes a Hybrid Spatial Compression (HSC) algorithm and error Bounded Temporal Compression (BTC) algorithm to compress the spatial and temporal information of trajectories respectively. PRESS also supports common spatial-temporal queries without fully decompressing the data. Through an extensive experimental study on real trajectory dataset, PRESS significantly outperforms existing approaches in terms of saving storage cost of trajectory data with bounded errors.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figure

    Search-based Motion Planning for Aggressive Flight in SE(3)

    Quadrotors with large thrust-to-weight ratios are able to track aggressive trajectories with sharp turns and high accelerations. In this work, we develop a search-based trajectory planning approach that exploits the quadrotor maneuverability to generate sequences of motion primitives in cluttered environments. We model the quadrotor body as an ellipsoid and compute its flight attitude along trajectories in order to check for collisions against obstacles. The ellipsoid model allows the quadrotor to pass through gaps that are smaller than its diameter with non-zero pitch or roll angles. Without any prior information about the location of gaps and associated attitude constraints, our algorithm is able to find a safe and optimal trajectory that guides the robot to its goal as fast as possible. To accelerate planning, we first perform a lower dimensional search and use it as a heuristic to guide the generation of a final dynamically feasible trajectory. We analyze critical discretization parameters of motion primitive planning and demonstrate the feasibility of the generated trajectories in various simulations and real-world experiments.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to RAL and ICRA 201

    Globally Optimal Cell Tracking using Integer Programming

    We propose a novel approach to automatically tracking cell populations in time-lapse images. To account for cell occlusions and overlaps, we introduce a robust method that generates an over-complete set of competing detection hypotheses. We then perform detection and tracking simultaneously on these hypotheses by solving to optimality an integer program with only one type of flow variables. This eliminates the need for heuristics to handle missed detections due to occlusions and complex morphology.
