Revisión teórica de oscilaciones de neutrinos

    Get PDF
Neutrinos play an important role in understanding nature’s behavior, from the suggestion of their existence, to the experimental issues found in the way of trying to present evidence for it. The oscillation induced by mass is supported by overwhelming experimental evidence. This work proposes a theoretical revision of the quantum mechanical descrip-tion of neutrino oscillations, discussing the inconsistencies of the usual ap-proaches and giving a more precise one. Moreover, the mechanism for oscilla-tions in matter is studied with the purpose of finding the differential equation to solve for the evolution of the neutrino states. For finding the evolved states, a code for solving the Schr¨odinger equation nu-merically was developed. The results were compared with the data from an already existing simulation software for neutrino experiments, allowing the validation of our solutions. Some steps following this work, such as the in-troduction of Non-Standard physics and predictions at future experiments, are described.Trabajo de investigació

    Intelligent knowledge acquisition system

    Get PDF
IKAS (Intelligent Knowledge Acquisition System) is an expert system building shell with a machine-assisted concept checker for easy integrated rule-entry. Unlike most expert system shells currently available, IKAS not only performs rule syntax checking, but also maintains semantic integration of the knowledge base by using a Concept Base. The Concept Base is incrementally grown during the cycle of expert system application development and safeguards the whole domain from conceptually conflicting rules by finding possible inconsistencies or duplications of concepts and giving recommendations for possible solutions. Also automatic generalized concept forming using the Inductive Extension Generalization method gives IKAS a capability to discover new inductive hypotheses from the existing knowledge base. IKAS can be an advancement for the current expert system technology in terms of complex knowledge representation and utilization

12 Confused Men: Using Flowchart Verdict Sheets To Mitigate Inconsistent Civil Verdicts

The finality of jury verdicts reflects an implicit societal acceptance of the soundness of the jury\u27s decision. Regardless, jurors are not infallible, and the questions they are often tasked with deciding are unfortunately neither obvious nor clear. The length of trial, complexity of subject matter, volume of factual background, and opaqueness of law can converge in a perfect storm that may confound even the most capable juror. Although the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure provide decision rules to resolve inconsistent verdicts, the current remedies authorized by Rule 49—notably, the resubmission of the verdict to the jury and the ordering of a new trial—impose time and money costs on the jury, litigants, and judicial system. The increasing complexity of civil litigation raises the stakes by increasing the likelihood of juror error and the costs of relitigating the case. This Note proposes the creation of flowchart verdict sheets as a prophylactic against juror confusion. The flowchart verdict sheet builds upon current legal reform proposals to increase juror understanding while decreasing juror confusion and incorporates principles of effective visual design. By mitigating the confusion that can result in inconsistencies before the verdict is rendered, the flowchart verdict sheet enables the judicial system to avoid the costs associated with remedying inconsistent verdicts

Mistakes in medical ontologies: Where do they come from and how can they be detected?

We present the details of a methodology for quality assurance in large medical terminologies and describe three algorithms that can help terminology developers and users to identify potential mistakes. The methodology is based in part on linguistic criteria and in part on logical and ontological principles governing sound classifications. We conclude by outlining the results of applying the methodology in the form of a taxonomy different types of errors and potential errors detected in SNOMED-CT
