    Diesel engine fuel injection monitoring using acoustic measurements and independent component analysis

    Air-borne acoustic based condition monitoring is a promising technique because of its intrusive nature and the rich information contained within the acoustic signals including all sources. However, the back ground noise contamination, interferences and the number of Internal Combustion Engine ICE vibro-acoustic sources preclude the extraction of condition information using this technique. Therefore, lower energy events; such as fuel injection, are buried within higher energy events and/or corrupted by background noise. This work firstly investigates diesel engine air-borne acoustic signals characteristics and the benefits of joint time-frequency domain analysis. Secondly, the air-borne acoustic signals in the vicinity of injector head were recorded using three microphones around the fuel injector (120° apart from each other) and an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) based scheme was developed to decompose these acoustic signals. The fuel injection process characteristics were thus revealed in the time-frequency domain using Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) technique. Consequently the energy levels around the injection process period between 11 and 5 degrees before the top dead center and of frequency band 9 to 15 kHz are calculated. The developed technique was validated by simulated signals and empirical measurements at different injection pressure levels from 250 to 210 bars in steps of 10 bars. The recovered energy levels in the tested conditions were found to be affected by the injector pressure settings

    Detection of postural transitions using machine learning

    The purpose of this project is to study the nature of human activity recognition and prepare a dataset from volunteers doing various activities which can be used for constructing the various parts of a machine learning model which is used to identify each volunteers posture transitions accurately. This report presents the problem definition, equipment used, previous work in this area of human activity recognition and the resolution of the problem along with results. Also this report sheds light on the process and the steps taken to undertake this endeavour of human activity recognition such as building of a dataset, pre-processing the data by applying filters and various windowing length techniques, splitting the data into training and testing data, performance of feature selection and feature extraction and finally selecting the model for training and testing which provides maximum accuracy and least misclassification rates. The tools used for this project includes a laptop equipped with MATLAB and EXCEL and MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC respectively which have been used for data processing, model training and feature selection and Labelling respectively. The data has been collected using an Inertial Measurement Unit contains 3 tri-axial Accelerometers, 1 Gyroscope, 1 Magnetometer and 1 Pressure sensor. For this project only the Accelerometers, Gyroscope and the Pressure sensor is used. The sensor is made by the members of the lab named ‘The Technical Research Centre for Dependency Care and Autonomous Living (CETpD) at the UPC-ETSEIB campus. The results obtained have been satisfactory, and the objectives set have been fulfilled. There is room for possible improvements through expanding the scope of the project such as detection of chronic disorders or providing posture based statistics to the end user or even just achieving a higher rate of sensitivity of transitions of posture by using better features and increasing the dataset size by increasing the number of volunteers.Incomin

    Comparative Study of Different Methods in Vibration-Based Terrain Classification for Wheeled Robots with Shock Absorbers

    open access articleAutonomous robots that operate in the field can enhance their security and efficiency by accurate terrain classification, which can be realized by means of robot-terrain interaction-generated vibration signals. In this paper, we explore the vibration-based terrain classification (VTC), in particular for a wheeled robot with shock absorbers. Because the vibration sensors are usually mounted on the main body of the robot, the vibration signals are dampened significantly, which results in the vibration signals collected on different terrains being more difficult to discriminate. Hence, the existing VTC methods applied to a robot with shock absorbers may degrade. The contributions are two-fold: (1) Several experiments are conducted to exhibit the performance of the existing feature-engineering and feature-learning classification methods; and (2) According to the long short-term memory (LSTM) network, we propose a one-dimensional convolutional LSTM (1DCL)-based VTC method to learn both spatial and temporal characteristics of the dampened vibration signals. The experiment results demonstrate that: (1) The feature-engineering methods, which are efficient in VTC of the robot without shock absorbers, are not so accurate in our project; meanwhile, the feature-learning methods are better choices; and (2) The 1DCL-based VTC method outperforms the conventional methods with an accuracy of 80.18%, which exceeds the second method (LSTM) by 8.23%

    Real-Time Blind Photonic Interference Cancellation for mmWave MIMO

    Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave devices broadcast multiple spatially-separated data streams simultaneously in order to increase data transfer rates. Data transfer can, however, be compromised by interference. Conventional techniques for mitigating interference require additional space and power not generally available in handheld mobile devices. Here, we propose a photonic mmWave MIMO receiver architecture capable of interference cancellation with greatly reduced space and power needs. We demonstrate real-time photonic interference cancellation with an integrated FPGA-photonic system that executes a novel zero-calibration micro-ring resonator control algorithm. The system achieves sub-second cancellation weight determination latency with sub-Nyquist sampling. We evaluate the impact of canceller design parameters on performance, establishing that effective photonic cancellation is possible in handheld devices with less than 30 ms weight determination latency

    Seizure Detection Using Teager-Kaiser Energy and a Channel Signal Quality Assessment Algorithm

    This study investigated the possibility of reducing the time required for accurate epileptic seizure detection through a retroactive analysis. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting over 50 million individuals globally and is defined as a disorder which results in two seizures unprovoked by fever or medication. Diagnosis of epilepsy typically involves a monitored stay at an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). The monitoring and diagnosis process ranges on average from 35,000to35,000 to 40,000 for a single stay, and the patient results from EMU are not instantly available to the patient. The collected electroencephalogram (EEG) must be analyzed by a trained EMU technician before the physician analyzes the data. The retroactive seizure detection algorithm utilizes Teager-Kaiser energy (TE). TE increases as either a signal’s frequency or amplitude increases and is only dependent on three consecutive samples from the time-domain. The detection algorithm was trained and tested on 37,718 hours of data from 70 male Sprague Dawley rats with a total of 843 recorded seizures. The algorithm resulted in an average sensitivity of 98.1% and an average false positive rate (FPR) of 0.2660 per hour. Current algorithms involve a training stage and perform with a sensitivity between 80% and 98.8% and a FPR between 0.054 and 1 per hour. The study supports TE as a useful measure for seizure detection, and although this algorithm focuses on retroactive seizure detection, the quick response time of TE makes it well suited for real-time seizure detection
