Pigment Melanin: Pattern for Iris Recognition
Recognition of iris based on Visible Light (VL) imaging is a difficult
problem because of the light reflection from the cornea. Nonetheless, pigment
melanin provides a rich feature source in VL, unavailable in Near-Infrared
(NIR) imaging. This is due to biological spectroscopy of eumelanin, a chemical
not stimulated in NIR. In this case, a plausible solution to observe such
patterns may be provided by an adaptive procedure using a variational technique
on the image histogram. To describe the patterns, a shape analysis method is
used to derive feature-code for each subject. An important question is how much
the melanin patterns, extracted from VL, are independent of iris texture in
NIR. With this question in mind, the present investigation proposes fusion of
features extracted from NIR and VL to boost the recognition performance. We
have collected our own database (UTIRIS) consisting of both NIR and VL images
of 158 eyes of 79 individuals. This investigation demonstrates that the
proposed algorithm is highly sensitive to the patterns of cromophores and
improves the iris recognition rate.Comment: To be Published on Special Issue on Biometrics, IEEE Transaction on

Gender-From-Iris or Gender-From-Mascara?
Predicting a person's gender based on the iris texture has been explored by
several researchers. This paper considers several dimensions of experimental
work on this problem, including person-disjoint train and test, and the effect
of cosmetics on eyelash occlusion and imperfect segmentation. We also consider
the use of multi-layer perceptron and convolutional neural networks as
classifiers, comparing the use of data-driven and hand-crafted features. Our
results suggest that the gender-from-iris problem is more difficult than has so
far been appreciated. Estimating accuracy using a mean of N person-disjoint
train and test partitions, and considering the effect of makeup - a combination
of experimental conditions not present in any previous work - we find a much
weaker ability to predict gender-from-iris texture than has been suggested in
previous work
Preliminary Results on a "Real" Iris Recognition System under Challenging Operational Conditions
Iris recognition algorithms have recently demonstrated excellent performance in the authentication task. In this paper, we present a technology transfer project for the development and testing of a biometric recognition system under challenging operational conditions. Due to the stringent operational requirements, the design and implementation of the system included a phase of selecting technologically advanced hardware. The lack of corresponding data sets implied a novel acquisition step. The evaluation phase is preliminary as the data set is being expanded for the acquisition of new samples capable of highlighting the system’s critical issues. Current samples were acquired in very different lighting conditions and in the presence of glasses, which was not yet done in the literature. In addition to the selected hardware, such data allowed us to simulate a realistic environmental context for the project’s final prototype
Feature Matching in Iris Recognition System using MATLAB
Iris recognition system is a secure human authentication in biometric technology. Iris recognition system consists of five stages. They are Feature matching, Feature encoding, Iris Normalization, Iris Segmentation and Image acquisition. In Image acquisition, the eye Image is captured from the CASIA database, the Image must have good quality with high resolution to process next steps. In Iris Segmentation, the Iris part is detected by using Hough transform technique and Canny Edge detection technique. Iris from an eye Image segmented. In normalization, the Iris region is converted from the circular region into a rectangular region by using polar transform technique. In feature encoding, the normalized Iris can be encoded in the form of binary bit format by using Gabor filter techniques. In feature matching, the encoded Iris template is compared with database eye Image of Iris template and generated the matching score by using Hamming distance technique and Euclidean distance technique. Based on the matching score, we get the result. This project is developed using Image processing toolbox of Matlab software
