    Current paradigms in intelligent transportation systems

    Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) constitute today a multidisciplinary field of study involving a large number of different research areas. As a consequence, it is difficult to achieve a structured view of ITS, which is necessary to unify efforts and as guidance for future developments. This study aims to identify the main paradigms in the field of ITS by semantically analysing studies related to this general topic. An understanding about which research is considered valuable by the research community to build upon may provide valuable insights in this field. As a result of the statistical treatment of data, up to 13 paradigms are obtained. The scope of these paradigms and the relationships between them have also been detailed, providing a structured vision of ITS synthesised in a map formMinisterio de Educación y Ciencia DPI2007- 60128Junta de Andalucía.     An institutional deployment framework for intelligent transportation systems

The concept of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which is defined as the application of computing and electronics technologies to transportation, offers potential for alleviating the negative effects of traffic congestion. These negative effects include impacts on road efficiency, the environment, safety, and cost. Institutional obstacles, however, limit ITS deployment. This thesis presents a portfolio of ITS technologies that are relevant in combating congestion. Technologies studied include Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS), Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS), and many others. Each technology is analyzed on the basis of benefits and costs, real world examples, barriers to implementation, and social implications. From this portfolio, an institutional deployment framework for ITS is developed based on the barriers to implementation shared by many of these technologies. This framework addresses political, economic, organizational, financial, legal, and information issues. After developing this framework, it is applied to ITS institutions in the cities of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Three conclusions can be drawn from this comparison. First, ITS can make significant impacts on congestion, efficiency, safety, and the environment. At the same time, one must consider the social implications and costs of deployment. Second, deploying ITS in urban areas is a complex challenge, requiring the consideration of a wide range of factors. Finally, implementation of ITS must be specific to a particular region; the imitation of other cities without localized planning may result in unsuccessful deployments.by Sandi Shih Lin.S.M

    Issues Related to the Emergence of the Information Superhighway and California Societal Changes, IISTPS Report 96-4

    The Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies (IISTPS) at San José State University (SJSU) conducted this project to review the continuing development of the Internet and the Information Superhighway. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the impact on commuting and working patterns in California, and an analysis of how public transportation agencies, including Caltrans, might take advantage of the new communications technologies. The document reviews the technology underlying the current Internet “structure” and examines anticipated developments. It is important to note that much of the research for this limited-scope project was conducted during 1995, and the topic is so rapidly evolving that some information is almost automatically “dated.” The report also examines how transportation agencies are basically similar in structure and function to other business entities, and how they can continue to utilize the emerging technologies to improve internal and external communications. As part of a detailed discussion of specific transportation agency functions, it is noted that the concept of a “Roundtable Forum,” growing out of developments in Concurrent Engineering, can provide an opportunity for representatives from multiple jurisdictions to utilize the Internet for more coordinated decision-making. The report also included an extensive analysis of demographic trends in California in recent years, such as commute and recreational activities, and identifies how the emerging technologies may impact future changes

    Megacities : sustainability, transport, and economic development

Sustainability concepts include valuing and preserving the earth's resources so that future generations can enjoy their benefits. It requires changing human behavior and practices to be more efficient and less damaging to the environment, especially with the current rates of population growth and urban concentration. In addition, there is the element of social equity in which investments should secure benefits for all classes of society, not just the affluent. These concepts are particularly applicable in transportation systems, because they have been neglected in the traditional quantitative approaches to planning and investment. Of course, policies defining transportation and those enacted for sustainability impact economic development, which is a chief priority of governments. Therefore, future success in urban areas lies in balancing an array of interests and adopting the most comprehensively advantageous policies. This study will demonstrate the need for rethinking traditional urban transportation development strategies. It will detail the problems associated with urban transport that infringe on environmental conditions and human quality of life. This paper will explain approaches to transportation that can lead to improvements in the negative corollaries currently experienced. It will also present policy measures and tools that can be implemented. This research paper will provide information for city officials and planners to better understand the implications of transportation policies and the options available for governance.(cont.) These decisions are becoming more critical as urban growth leads to large metropolitan regions with incredible transportation demands.     Modeling temporal variations in travel demand for intelligent transportation systems

    The imbalance between demand and supply on transportation networks, especially during peak periods, leads to significant level of congestion. Potential solutions to alleviate congestion problems include enhancing system capacity and effective utilization of available capacity--i.e., traffic demand management. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) initiatives such as travel demand management systems (TDMS) and traveler information systems (TIS) refer to demand management as an objective. The success of these initiatives rely heavily on an ability to accurately estimate the temporal variations in travel demand in near real-time. The focus of this dissertation is on developing a methodology for estimating temporal variations in travel demand in urban areas; A significant portion of daily congestion on urban transportation networks occur during peak periods. A majority of trips during peak periods are work trips. The peak study period is divided into several time slices to facilitate simulation and modeling. A methodology is developed to estimate origin-destination (O-D) trip tables for each time slice. Trip attractions during each time slice, for each traffic analysis zone (TAZ), are estimated using pertinent characteristics of the TAZ. The O-D trip tables for each time slice are estimated as a function of trip attractions for the time slice, total trip productions during the peak period and the travel time matrix for the peak period. These O-D trip tables for each time slice and the existing network conditions can be used to assign trips in near real-time; The algorithm is coded using C++ programming language. The model is first tested on various small hypothetical cases with 5 TAZs, 10 TAZs, 15 TAZS and 20 TAZs respectively. The results obtained are as expected. The robustness of the model is tested using the hypothetical case with 10 TAZs. Since, testing and validating the model on large real world networks is important, the model is tested with 1995 data obtained for the Las Vegas valley. The results are consistent with that obtained for the hypothetical cases. The model is tested on Silicon Graphics IP 27 with IRIX version 6.4 as the operating system. For almost all the scenarios, the run time is less than 3 minutes. This strengthens the notion that the model can be implemented in real time

    The wireless communication industry has experienced a rapid technological evolution from its basic first generation (1G) wireless systems to the latest fourth generation (4G) wireless broadband systems. Wireless broadband systems are becoming increasingly popular with consumers and the technological strength of 4G has played a major role behind the success of wireless broadband systems. The IEEE 802.16m standard of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) has been accepted as a 4G standard by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2011. The IEEE 802.16m is fully optimised for wireless communications in fixed environments and can deliver very high throughput and excellent quality of service. In mobile communication environments however, WiMAX consumers experience a graceful degradation of service as a direct function of vehicular speeds. At high vehicular speeds, the throughput drops in WiMAX systems and unless proactive measures such as forward error control and packet size optimisation are adopted and properly adjusted, many applications cannot be facilitated at high vehicular speeds in WiMAX communications. For any proactive measure, bit error rate estimation as a function of vehicular speed, serves as a useful tool. In this thesis, we present an analytical model for bit error rate estimation in WiMAX communications using the Nakagami-m fading model. We also show, through an analysis of the data collected from a practical WiMAX system, that the Nakagami-m model can be made adaptive as a function of speed, to represent fading in fixed environments as well as mobile environments
